Torp Ekspressen

by tini58de

To get from Oslo to the Ryanair airport of Oslo-Torp, you need to take a looooooooooooong busride - preferably with the Torpexpressen! The bus departs for the two hour busride to Torp in time for the various flights. It leaves behind the trainstation at the Oslo bus station. Tickets can be obtained at the station or inside the bus.

All aboard for Bergen

by uglyscot

We went by ship from Newcastle to Bergen in 1952. We had a most unpleasant crossing, partly because of the rough seas, but also because our cabin was near the engine. So always try to get a cabin in a good position. The trip back was better though. Our vessels were the Venus [2], scrapped in 1968 and the Jupiter sold in 1955.It seems as if Bergen Line is now purely for Norwegian coastal cruises. However ,there are other companies running from Newcastle to Bergen via Stavanger and Haupstund.

Norway in a nutshell

by lumikki

It's a very convenient and flexible possibility to see some of the best parts of Norway. I started it from Oslo, travelled by train to Myrdal, from there another train trip to Flåm, with Flåmsbana (what incredible views), stayed 3 days in Flåm, continued with a fjord cruise to Gudvangen, then bus following the steep Stalheimskleiva to Voss, then train to Bergen. After overnighting in Bergen, I returned by train to Oslo. The route can also be done in one day if you wish, and can have different starting points. It was a very exciting experience, for sure.

by Saagar

The Helgeland part of Norway is that thin gut that ties the north and south together - easily the most beautiful part of Norway.A two-week ticket called "Helgelandspasset" give you access to nearly all bus and local boat transportation in Helgeland. You can travel by ferry, fast boats and all buses in Helgeland with this ticket, and there is a lot to explore here. Bring your bike, kayak, canoe... You can explore the fjords and islands and criss-cross the map over a large swath of the land.

Trains

by diocletianvs

Norwegian railway network is rather limited, but still major cities are connected by rail. Note that you cannot reach the most northern parts of the country by train. The most northern town you can reach from Norway is Bodø. Narvik further north is connected to Swedish railway network. Rail travel is not very cheap, but trains run rather regulary and are comfortable. For travel inside Norway you will use NSB (Norwegian State Railways) trains. Timetables and info can be found on www.nsb.noOslo is connected to Gothenburg and Stockholm by LINX trains. This is a separate company owned by Swedish and Norwegian railways. Timetables can be found on www.linx.noNote that if you buy tickets one week in advance the price can be up to 50% lower. Last-minute on Norwegian railways means very expensive travel (if there are still places left).

Sailing in Norway

by daarth

An alternative way to see Norway is by boat. The opportunities are great for all types of sailing. You can sail in protected waters in the huge Oslo fjord, or on the inside of the Islands of Western Norway. Most places the water is deep enough to sail all the way to shore and tie up to the nearest tree! There are also marinas with all facilities for those that prefer that. See my Bergen page for Charter companies.

Oslo - Bergen

by daarth

The shortest rout west is highway 7 over the mountain plateau Hardangervidda. It used to be the main rout between East and West, but now there is a highway further north that can boast of one of the worlds longest road tunnels. I still prefer the Hardangervidda rout because of the fantastic nature that I never get tired of. Keep in mind that the weather can be rough up there at times and can change in seconds. In the winter it is close at night and if the weather is rough they use “convoy driving” with a snow plough in the lead. If it gets real bad they simply close the road. The drive from Oslo to the Hardangervidda is easy.A good link below:

Norwegian budget airline

by Crazywoman

Norway is a country with long distances and lots of mountains to pass if you want to travel between east and west or north and south. As I have mentioned other places in my tips, nature and scenic views are one of the main reasons for visiting Norway, therefor you should choose ground transportation whenever possible to see all of this. If however you need to move long distances or have limited amount of time you should of course choose to fly. Norwegian is a budget airline that has a good selection of domestic flights in Norway and also fligths to other European countries. I have used them a couple of times for transportation between Stockholm and Oslo/Stavanger and have recently booked a flight to London Gatwick from Stockholm. I have always booked well in advance and have been able to get good prices everytime. You should be aware of extra costs for seat reservations, which you do not...
