FLYTOGET Train

by tarda

Flytoget is the best way (very fast and cheap in comparing with taxi) to get to Oslo from Airport. You do not need to take a ticket; at the entrance of the station swipe your credit card, that is all. Paperless transportation, If you need a receipt, then you get registered to their web page and they mail the receipt to your mail address. As I remember it travels between the airport and Sandvika.

Speed limits and traffic

by ATLC

Driving distances may take longer than you think in Norway. If you choose Satellite view in www.googlemaps.com and zoom in along the route you'll understand why: mountain ridges, detours along water, lots of climbing and descending.I've driven once in Norway, around Stavanger. You don't cover that many miles but it takes a long time because of the landscape. Here's more info on traffic and speed limits in Norway.

Rail Travel Tour to Fjord Norway

by tamcor

I booked a tour called the "Norway in a Nutshell" at ACPRail.com that takes you through the incredible scenic locations in Fjord. Some of the delights of this trip included the The Bergen Railway, northern Europe's highest railway, which travels between Oslo and Bergen, the journey on the Flam Railway which has an incredible view of mountains and waterfalls. This journey is continued by boat from Aurlandsfjord and into the Naeroyfjord, the narrowest fjord in Europe. Again a mighty mountainous view! The coach journey continues up the incredible bends of Stalheimskleiva. There is a short stop over at the hotel and then the journey continues to Voss. All in all a trip to remember!

Norway by train.

by mariamaloney

The trains in Norway are fantastic.....and can be really cheap. I was there in 2008, and found it cost approx. 60 Australian dollars to train from Bergen to Oslo, and about the same from Oslo to Trondheim. There are special fares called 'mini priss' available during the week, with a choice of departure times. The trains are clean, modern and a great way to see the countryside.

Getting around by car in Norway

by Crazywoman

Many visitors come to Norway for the scenic views of the fjords and the mountains and in my opionion the best way to see this, is to drive your own car. With your own car you can stop whereever you like to have a look at the views or take pictures. You will also be able to get to places where no public transportation or tour bus will take you. Have in mind that because of the fjords and the mountains the roads in Norway can be quite curvy and go up and down a lot, so you will probably not be able to drive as fast as in many other countries. On the other hand, you are on vacation and you want to enjoy the views. To get across some of the fjords you will need to take a ferry, and a lot of places there are tunnels to make the road shorter and straighter through the mountains or under the fjords. If you have the time and possibility you should at least try to find a way of getting around...

Ferries in Norway

by Crazywoman

When you are in the fjord areas of Norway, you should be aware that you will probably need to take some ferries. Most places they depart quite often during the day and you will not need to wait for a long time or plan in advance, you just go there and get in the queue. On other distances you will need to plan because there are limited departures. I have been on a lot of ferries in Norway and have never needed to book in advance, it has been first come first serve. The ferries normally take from half an hour to 2-3 hours and often comes with some fantastic views! The ferries come with a fee, and as it varies from route to route, I can not give a pricelist here, but I think the prices will start at around 80-100 NOK for the car and driver and around 30-50 NOK per adult. This will vary between different routes and is also depending on the size of your vehicle. How to pay could be different...

Toll roads in Norway

by Crazywoman

There are around 50 toll roads in Norway. The toll fees are there mainly to pay for road projects. Prices lies between 15-40 NOK for a car and is more expensive the larger the car is. Some special tunnels or bridges can have a fee of a couple of houndred NOK, but they are not that frequent. There are different ways to pay in the toll station, and if you are planning on driving around in the areas with most toll roads for a couple of weeks, I think the easiest one is the AUTOPASS. You can register you credit card for this before or within 14 days after you passed through your first toll in Norway. If you choose this solution you will never have to think about having Norwegian coins available, you just need to make sure you are in the right lane when you pass the toll plaza. If you don't want to use the AUTOPASS, there are a couple of various tolls. One version where you need to stop and...

Travelling to Norway with bus

by Crazywoman

It is possible to get to Oslo by bus from Sweden and Denmark. There are expressbus lines that come along the west coast of Sweden and there are lines coming from Stockholm. I used to travel a couple of times a year with the night bus from Stockholm to Oslo and I also travelled frequently from Gothenburg to Oslo during a period, and there were never any problems. Just remember to bring a pillow for the night bus so that you can sleep.

Getting around by bus in Norway

by Crazywoman

I would say that if you want to do a round trip in Norway, a car is the best way to travel since it makes you much more flexible both regarding the places you can visit but also when it comes to the possibility to stop and enjoy the sights where ever you like. That being said, it is possible to get around in Norway without a car as well. My experience is that expressbus is often the cheapest way to travel, and Norway with all it's mountains and fjords is not the optimal country for trains and thus the buses will take you to other/more locations than what is possible by train. All buses have seat guarantee, they will add another bus if there are much people. They like though that groups of 9 or more book in advance. You should check their website for more information, but general rule is that if you are more than 1 person and book in advance there are possibilities to get better prices. It...

Tour of Scandinavia

by Durfun

From Denmark you can get buses to Sweden, upto Gothenburg, via Malmo. Bus from Gothenburg to Oslo takes about 6 hours, and Gothenburg to Stockholm about 7 hours.Equally, Stockholm to Oslo bus takes 8 hours, overnights are available, so you could then catch a train in Oslo to reach Bergen. This train ride is very scenic as you approach Finse. Get off at Myrdal, and take the rickety Flamsbana - worldfamous. Goes through stunning parts. From Flam catch a ferry ride, then bus to Voss, next arrive in Bergen via another train. The above will give you a taste of the fjords in Norway. From Bergen (fjordland capital) you could select many fjords, eg Sogne. Hard., Geir., etc. In Bergen definitely take the funicular to view the city from above - breathtaking!Trains in Norway are quite expensive, but not if you book in advance: look for mini-prix fares at www.nsb.noGood luck.
