Get to Asker

by torresdyc

If you are hosted in Asker there is a couple of trains that you can use to get to there: the express train and the regular one. Being in Asker is a good option for a business trip as there are many companies in the are and have a good communication with the Oslo downtown and the main airport.

Hurtigruten!

by travelfrosch

This voyage, dubbed "the most beautiful journey in the world," lived up to its motto for us. Luxurious ships depart daily from Bergen and Kirkenes, making the journey up the Norwegian coast through spectacular scenery. The northward trip takes 6 days, making calls at a number of cities, towns, and villages on the way. The ship will then turn around and return to Bergen in an additional 5 days.Travelers have a variety of travel options and price ranges. You can take a full-up, 11-day "round trip" cruise, or a "half-round trip" (6 days north or 5 days south). Prices vary with time of year, class of cabin, car passage (yes, you can bring your car!), etc -- check the website for details. For those with limited time and/or money, another option is to take a "port-to-port" trip. For our part, we took the 3-overnight trip from Svolvær to Kirkenes in the least expensive cabin available (NOK 400...

Oslo Gardermoen Airport

by travelfrosch

Oslo's Gardermoen Airport (Airport Code: OSL) is the main international airport of Norway, located approximately 50 km (30 miles) north of Oslo. A hub airport for SAS Scandinavian Airlines, the airport also is serviced by 27 other airlines, from Aeroflot to Widerøe.To get to Oslo from Gardermoen, you can use the train station co-located with the airport. You have the choice between the "Flytoget," a frequent, fast (about 25 minutes), and expensive train not covered by railpasses; or the NSB Federal Railways train, a less frequent, slower (about 40 minutes), and less expensive train covered by Eurail and Scanrail. Further complicating matters is that the two trains have separate ticket counters, and even separate monitors. In addition to the trains, an Airport Bus departs every 15 minutes for Oslo, with a travel time of 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on traffic. Taxis are a possibility,...

Cheap(er) train travel

by hexelein

Travelling by train in Norway can be quite expensive, but there are some discounts that should be taken into consideration.Children Adults paying the standard fare can bring one child under the age of 16 along for free. Children under the age of 4 are always free. MiniprisWhen ordering between 90 and 1 days in advance (easily done online), there is the option to get minipris tickets. These are either 199, 299 or 399 NOK. Just select "minipris" under "lowest price" when you book. There are limited numbers of minipris seats available, and they sell out quickly on the long distances, so order as early as possible! Minipris tickets are valid on all Inter City trains in Norway PLUS the train to Gothenburg in Sweden. In theory, you could travel from Bodø to Göteborg, which is a 22 hour train ride, for as little as 199 NOK!

Ticketless on main train lines

by SailorRoar

You can travel ticketless on the long distance trains in Norway, so you don't have to hazzle with getting tickets mailed to you. Just choose ticketless when you order, and write down; departure time and carriage number and seat number. When you are onboard the train you just give your name when they come around to check the tickets, and you'll get your ticket receipt.

Rent a child/baby seat

by SailorRoar

I did a quick search on the issues, after posting my tip, silly me ;) Seems people have been able to rent car seats from car rental companies, without renting a car. So contacting a car rental company in the airport/city that you arrive is a good idea :) Have a nice trip!

Oslo - Bergen & the Fjords

by ROCKARIA

I did the train trip from Bergen to Oslo and it took about 7 hrs.The scene was fantastic and was 7 hrs on my feet taking pics all the time.Dont miss the tour of the fjords from Bergen which will take you to to Flam. From Flam you can ride back with the train to Bergen after the fjord trip.

Sleeper Train

by ideabuzz

The sleeper train in wonderful. You get a very comfortable bed with a nice thick comforter and high quality sheets. Since I had the compartment to myself the hard part was deciding top or bottom bunk.A word of caution: The knob near the door is the heat - TURN IT ON. The car is comfy in the station but the line between Oslo and Bergen takes you to the highest altitude in Norway. Also fasten the strap (looks like a seat belt) if you are in the upper berth, it's there for a reason.

Ordering NSB train tickets on the web

by Rachel972

I ordered train tickets on the NSB website. There's an option for English, but the fields where you have to select a choice remain in Norwegian. I couldn't find out before I paid if this also reserved a seat. It does. I also couldn't find out if I have to pick up a regular paper ticket before boarding the train, the ticket counter was closed at the time of departure on a Saturday. There's a field where to pick up the ticket - TOGEN. Apparently this means "on the train".Then I had to change the date because my flight was changed. This I did by telephone, on the website it said "dial, then press 4 for English". On the phone, all the information which number to press was in Norwegian, I guess that I pressed the 4 at the right moment. The man cancelled my reserved tickets, issued new tickets and sent me the new reservation by e-mail.We arrived early at the train, my husband went out on the...
