Save money on flights to Norway

by Kjetil

Until recently, traveling to Norway from almost any other part of the world was bloody expencive. Now, hovever, there are a couple of different 'low-fare airlines' that can transport you from a number of European cities to Oslo. Well - you should be aware of the fact that these airlines may not bring you to Oslo at all - but to Sandefjord lufthavn, which is an airport near the town of Sandefjord. If you see the name Oslo Torp or Oslo Sandefjord on your flight itinerary, it means that you are not going to Oslo, but to Sandefjord. But - there is a bus connecting this airport with Oslo. The bus ride takes about an hour and a half. If you are planning on traveling on from Oslo airport, however, you will need AT LEAST three hours to get from Sandefjord lufthavn to the Oslo airport.HA! RyanAir now has flights between London Stansted and Haugesund! Great offer if you want to visit the Norwegian...

Reaching the Remoteness

by DanielF

Even if Northern Norway is a very remote destination, communications are assured during the Summer and even in the hardest winters. Roads are in good condition and the traffic is not very heavy. Keep always in mind that it is often necessary to take ferries to cross the fjords or to reach some islands, so be informed about their schedules beforehand and be well in time during peak days, as they get full soon.

Crusing in the Arctic

by DanielF

Cruiseliners are another possibility to reach this place during the Summer. They usually depart from Bergen and go up the coast, visiting the fjords and the islands, as far as Nordkapp and Hammerfest. The most famous line is the Hurtigruten, that actually started as a courier ship in order to assure the communication with the Northern area and has been turned into a luxury cruise ship. This picture was taken from Nordkapp while the tourists were cheering the midnight sun.

Transporation from Airport to Downtown

by maryellen50

Norway's state railway, NSB (Norges Statsbaner), has two train stations downtown -- Oslo Sentralstasjon (Oslo S), and a station at Nationaltheatret. Long-distance domestic and international trains arrive at and leave from Oslo S Station. From Oslo S Station, it's a 19-minute ride by Flytoget (express train, NKr 150 one-way), with trains scheduled every 10 minutes For one-half the fare of the Flytoget, you can take the regular train which arrives 10 minutes later than the Flytoget. Subways and most buses start running at 5:30 AM, with the last run after midnight. Taxis are very, very expensive so use the train, trams or buses.

Rent a Car

The easiest way to discover Norway is by car. The roads are fantastic and very good. To rent a car in Norway is not very cheap, but it give you the opportunity come by plane, choose your itenerary and to stop when you want!

A guide to 445 Norwegian harbours

by Saagar

Getting around Norway by boat is a delightful experience and can take you a lifetime - a long one - to cover it all.The main harbours on the stretch between Lidesnes (souterhmost point in Norway) to the Swedish border are covered on the web site www.havneguiden.no . The authors will expand the guide geographically. It covers the harbours' sailing lanes by aerial photos and maps. The guide is free, but for detailed, indepth info you need to become a member, cost NOK 198 per year. OK, considered the cost of the books covering the same areas.

Why bother about Oslo - cross the Oslo Fjord

by Saagar

If you look at the map you will find Oslo as a key hole in the fjord system called the Oslo Fjord. If you have no business or interest in visiting Oslo and are transiting east - west from the southwestern part of Norway to the south eastern part or Sweden or v.v., consider the three following options: 1) The ferry from Strømstad (Sweden) to Sandefjord, Norway.2) The ferry Moss to Horten (only 30 minutes - saves you hours).3) The tunnel under the Oslo Fjord near Drøbak making the E18 shortcut from around Ås to Drammen.

North Sea helicopters

by Saagar

A large part of Norway is under the sea, and under the sea floor is a lot of oil and gas, and on top of the sea bottom are located whole concentrated cities of workers and staff. These oil and gas platforms are accessed by helicopter. The helicopter schedules and actual flight departures and arrivals are noted on the web page heliport.no . Mainly of interest to people engaged in the oil industry, I suppose. You are not let onto these flights unless you have a purpose.
