Regional travels from Torp airport

by Saagar

Telemarksekspressen bus travels up to 12 times a day from early morning to late night between the cities Tønsberg and Skien, taking in Torp airport after Tønsberg, then Sandefjord, Larvik, Porsgrunn, Skien, Ulefoss and Bø. This itinerary gives you access to a swath of Vestfold and Telemark counties. From Bø you can connect to upper Telemark and Hardangervidda mountain plateau or the Oslo-Kristiansand-Stavanger rail line. From Sandefjord, Larvik and Tønsberg you have direct access to a very nice section of the Skagerak fjord country. Grenland region (see my Porsgrunn pages) may have less to offer, but in the outlying areas have nice lakes and a good piece of coast also. And good bus connections toward Sørlandet- the south coast.

City Bikes

by tini58de

In four cities in Norway (Oslo, Trondheim, Bergen and Drammen) the city bike service is available.Throughout the city you will find these bike stations. What you need is an electronic smartcard (to be obtained either at www.adshel.no or at the tourist information. It costs 60 NOK/day plus a deposit of 500 NOK (unless you are organized and apply for one beforehand, which costs the same amount of money for a whole year!!) With this smartcard you can get a bicycle for a maximum of 3 hours - and you can return it at any station. If you are not done with your tour, just get the next bike after 3 hours and so on!The bike stations are open from 6 a.m. until midnight!Interested? Read the City Bike user guide!

Torp Airport (SDF)

by Saagar

If you opt to fly to Norway via Torp airport be aware that this is not Oslo's main airport; it is only a very small, regional airport near the city of Sandefjord, 1 1/2 -2 hrs from Oslo. However, with cheap airlines such as Ryan Air and business routes to Europe out of this heavily populated corner of Norway on the increase, it is quite likely you might land here at Torp. A very simple and efficient airport it is, but really out in the woods (depending where you want to go...). Otherwise, the airport provides a good link to the domestic network of Wideroes airlines (www.wideroe.no). Torp airport has a number of useful services, such as "Torp Servicekontor" which can do all sorts of bookings and package tours domestic and international. The do air ticketing, accommodation, ticketing for concerts and musicals, car rental etc. Check their web pages for current air connections and...

Cheaper (less expensive?) train travel

by Saagar

Railway travel in Norway is expensive unless you buy an all-inclusive sightseeing-type excursion ticket. However, these ready-made itineraries might not suit your plans. But check them out for good value before you drop the idea! Locals, frequent rail travellers in Norway buy "kundekort", a sort of frequent traveller's discount card. You pay a one-time fee for this, and the card will give you a 30% discount on all departures for the next year. Say, if you travel from Oslo to Trondheim return, you will have earned the fee for the customer card already.Save cost also by taking the night trains with a sleeper: saves you hotel overnight cost as it is comparatively much cheaper. Night trains with sleepers travel Oslo-Bergen, Oslo-Stavanger, Oslo-Trondheim and Trondheim-Bodoe, as well as Stockholm-Trondheim and Stockholm-Kiruna-Narvik.On regional trains there are a limited number of...

Buses work in Norway!

by globalvillager

Buses are a great way to get around Norway! They are on schedule, clean, comfortable, and have uniformly courteous/helpful drivers. I was very nervous about relying on the bus system because we had a tight itinerary, but we made all our connections. And had a pleasant time doing so.

Fly - and keep it cheap

by tini58de

From Spitsbergen to Tromso and from Oslo home to Germany we went by plane. We tried to keep it as cheap as possible, so we went with Ryan Air from Oslo Torp to Frankfurt Hahn. Just note that the Torp Airport is about 2 hours south of Oslo, which is quite a way!!To get from Longyearbyen/Spitsbergen to Tromso/Norway we went with SAS Braathens. Both airlines were absolutely recommendable!

The trains work efficient in Norway only in the south. Because of its nature mountain area and long distances there further that you can get north in Narvik, but even this only trough trains in Sweden.

Public transport is very expensive in Norway, and if you consider that distances are far and the cost of living, it might be worth actually to fly sometimes, so check the local domestic airlines, they might have attractive deals.

SAS Braathens

by Cristian_Uluru

SAS Braathens is the Nowegian and Scandinavian Airlines which connect Oslo and many Norwegian towns to the Scandinavian capitals like Copenaghen and Stockholm. SAS connect Scandinava Region with direct flight to the major European towns and world ones. It has got a very modern fleet with Boeing B737 Next Generation (B737-600/700/800) and Airbus (A340 - A330). It is one of the most modern European airlines and it offers a good services. In the domestic flight it flys like a low cost, if you want drinks or food you must pay it (no more than 4 Euro).
