View of the northern part of Tromsø island. by FletteMette Tromsø's small airport is located on Langnes, in the north-western part of Tromsø island, around 5 km from the town centre. For transportation to and from the town centre, see my Flybussen - tip. For a good view of the Norwegian coast, ask for a seat on the left side of the plane when flying to Tromsø from southern Norway - and of course, one on the right side when flying back south..;o) Airlines: www. sasbraathens.no SAS Braathens flies within Scandinavia, and to several other destinations. You will have to travel via Oslo for most destinations when you're flying from Tromsø. www.norwegian.no Within Norway, and to around 50 European destinations - until December 07 Norwegian's only direct flights from Tromsø was to Oslo - in December they started a new direct route Tromsø - London Stansted. Norwegian is usually quite a bit cheaper than SAS, and if you book well ahead you'll get a one way ticket Oslo - Tromsø for NOK 500. They have special campaigns quite often, with tickets Oslo - Tromsø sometimes as low as 195 NOK. (24 euro) See Norwegian's excellent low-fare calendar if your flight dates are flexible - it shows you the cheapest tickets available every day of your chosen month. www.wideroe.no Widerøe has smaller planes, flying to ca 35 destinations in Norway - mostly small towns, Northern Norway is particularly well covered. A few destinations in Northern Europe. Leave a Comment

The airport bus - an easy way to get here;-) by FletteMette Tromsø airport bus connects with most plane arrivals and departures. (But on weekdays the last bus departs from the airport at 21:45) Check the website for time tables. There are two routes: to Tromsø University Hospital, and to the city centre. The travel time from the town centre to the airport is around 15-20 minutes, unless there's very heavy traffic. The bus stops at several hotels in the town centre, and all hotels in the centre are within a short distance from the bus stops. (It's a small town.. :o) For two or more people travelling together, taxi to the town centre will be around the same price or even cheaper than the bus. (Taxi around 100 NOK on weekdays, a bit more expensive during weekends and at night) Ticket Prices: Adult single 50 NOK, return 75 NOK (valid for 3 days) Child single 25 NOK, return 40 NOK Family discount: up to 3 kids free per paying adult Leave a Comment

The Hirtigruten 'steamer' Lyngen at Tromso by angiebabe, 4 more photos The Hirtigruten Coastal 'steamer' which pulls into every sizable port between Bergen and Kirkenes, passing some of Scandanavia's best scenery along the way arrives, on its northbound route, at 245pm each day and departs at 630 which gives a good amount of time to see quite a bit of Tromso. Even during my visit arriving with about 45 minutes of daylight but 4 good hours of walking i managed to see a lot: the streets and their wooden period and impressive modernist buildings around the city centre, up and over the 1km long bridge to the Arctic cathedral, back to a recommended restaurant for its recommended desserts and wine!, and a quick meal, writing and posting of the all important postcards!, and back to the boat all without quite freezing! The southbound times allow only time for transfers of passengers and goods arriving at 1145 pm and departing at 130 am. In Tromso, up in the Arctic Circle, in winter the sun stays below the horizon from 25 November to 16 January and in summer the 'midnight sun' stays above the horizon from 17 May to 25 July. The express boat in Rystraumen by FletteMette The express boats are a convenient, comfortable and fairly quick way of travelling between Tromsø, Finnsnes and Harstad in southern Troms. The express boats have between 2 and 4 daily departures in each direction, see the website below for timetables. Journey time between Tromsø and Harstad is 2 hours 30 minutes, between Tromsø and Finnsnes ca 1 hour. The express boat also calls at Brøstadbotn and Engenes on some of the routes. Ticket prices, adults: Tromsø - Finnsnes ca 250 NOK, Tromsø - Harstad ca 500 NOK. Various discounts are available: Couples pay for 1 1/2 ticket, children (4-15) get a 50% discount, students a 25% discount. Tickets are bought on board. Major credit cards are accepted. It's recommended to be at the express boat terminal at least 15 minute before the departure time. The express boat terminal in Tromsø is situated at Prostneset, right in the town centre, a two-minute walk from the main street (Storgata). The bus terminal is situated right next to the express boat terminal. Leave a Comment Theme: Ship/Boat

There is cable car that will take you to the top of the mountain in few minutes. However, we decided to take the path to the top which took us about an hour. The ride down the mountain with the cable care is for free, and that is the ONLY free ride you will ever get in Norway ;-) Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Northbound coastal steamers arrive daily at 2:30PM, departing for Kirkenes at 6:30PM. Southbound steamers arrive daily at 11:45PM, departing for the journey to Bergen at 1:30AM. To get to or from Tromsø, you'll normally take a "port-to-port" trip. The website has a list of up-to-date fares and cabin options. Online booking is possible, but for those living outside Scandinavia, your best bet is to email Hurtigruten directly if you want a cabin. Book well in advance if you're traveling in June or July. Also check the website for the latest specials. For example, in September 2006, you can take a "round trip" journey from Tromsø to Kirkenes and back for NOK 1720 per person double occupancy, including cabin and breakfast.

Tromsø harbour by FletteMette Tromsø airport Langnes (TOS) is situated 5 km from the town centre - on the western side of Tromsø island. The airport is small, but it has pretty much everything you'll need. Left luggage lockers are available (30 / 40 NOK per 24 hours), and if you need to store larger items (bikes etc) you can arrange this with the Service Centre. WiFi is available in all Norwegian airports (go online, and use your credit card to pay for internet access on the airport's WLAN portal) - there are also a few internet terminals in the departure hall. Your shopping options are fairly limited - there's a quite large Narvesen shop (Narvesen is a nation-wide chain of kiosks - quite similar to 7-eleven - with longer opening hours and higher prices than regular shops) which also carries some souvenirs (I'm pretty sure they'll be a lot more expensive here than in town, though!) There's also a tax free shop (for those flying international routes) but I've only flown domestic from Tromsø so I don't know what that shop is like. And then there's a cafe and a coffee shop, and also an Irish pub (!). There's a bank at the airport, and there are also ATMs available. Bank opening hours: Mon-Fri: 09.45–16.15, Saturday: 10–15, Sun: 15-18 For info about the airport bus, see separate tip. Taxi to the town centre takes around ten minutes, and costs 100-150 NOK depending on day / time. (More expensive at night and during weekends.) There's a Service Centre at the airport, contact them if you have any questions. (Opening hours 8-20 Mon-Fri, 14-20 Sun - Saturdays closed in summer, open 9.30-14.30 in winter.) The port of Tromsø by DanielF Tromsø has one of the busiest airports above the Arctic with frequent connections to Oslo and other cities in Scandinavia, so it makes sense to fly there if you just want to visit Northern Norway or if you do not have a lot of time. Otherwise you will have to make a very long journey along the country by car, bus or even the 'Hurtigruten' (the luxury cruise liner). Well, after all, you will read often while you are in Norway that the distance from Oslo to Tromsø is about the same between Oslo and Rome. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane
