A great way to get to Larvik is flying with Ryanair. This is because the Ryanair Oslo Torp destination lands in Sandefjord, just 25km North-East of Larvik (That means it doesn't actually fly into Oslo - but a destination 2 hours south). From 'Oslo Torp' you can fly to Glasgow (Prestwick), Liverpool and London (Stansted) in the UK, Bremen and Frankfurt (Hahn) in Germany, Barcelona (Girona) and Madrid in Spain, Marseille (Provence) in France, and Milan (Orio al Serio - in Bergamo) and Pisa in Italy. All flights are relatively cheap, if you want snacks on board you have to pay for them (but you can bring your own on board if you want). The seats are comfortable enough, but sometimes on flights longer than 2-2.5 hours they can start to feel a bit stiff. Leave a Comment

Colorline- pic from the web by Azhut If you want to go to Frederikshavn in Denmark by boat to Larvik , you can take it for a round trip. It takes about 6 hours. I found a good website when you can choose your ship lines and check at the timetable to decide when you want to live and how much you want to pay. Look at the site below but remember that it is written in ducth!! Leave a Comment

I travelled straight from Oslo airport to Larvik, Vestfold. It took about 2hrs 40mins, I didn't have to switch trains anywhere either (From Oslo S it is 2hrs 7mins). The trains have good storage for luggage - hand luggage and bigger bags, like suitcases. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the seats were comfortable and the views all the way to Larvik (once away from Oslo S) were amazing (lakes and forests). Leave a Comment

Pin/Badge from the Kaupang 'gift shop' by Marpessa Kaupang is an excavated Viking town. The people at the village (in traditional costumes) were more than happy to tell us about how the vikings lived, most of them likely to have been craftsmen. Nearby there was also a grave (but being a rainy day I didn't feel like venturing through the mud). Leave a Comment

by Azhut Larvik is a fishermen's town so at the harbour you can see many boats that goes up and down along the little fjord. I like staying a bit there looking at the sea and I discovered many wonderful "glassmanette" aka jelly-fish in english ;-). I apologize for my poor norwegian!! Leave a Comment

Colin Archer by Marpessa Well.. maybe not a 'must see' activity, but if you're interested in boats, then Colin Archer is your man (or was your man). The tourist office will have more information. This quote, however, also seems to be appropriate: "In the town's little skerry park, Tollerodden, a stone's throw from the nautical museum, are placed statues of both Thor Heyerdahl and Colin Archer, reminding us of the great significance of the sea has had for Larvik." -http://www.norwaypost.no/content.asp?cluster_id=9226&folder_id=18 Leave a Comment

by Azhut Not far from Larvik there is an archaeological site when students of archaeology can work and discover old viking stones and things. The site is very close to the center of Larvik so it's easy to find it, you can ask to the local people. Leave a Comment

Kjaerefossen by Igraine A roadsign on the 40 meaning that there was something to be seen of the road made us make a right turn. After a short walk we ended up at this waterfall "Kjaerefossen". It was a great sight, lots of noise too. It is a spot for catching salmons. There was also a fish stair

When in Larvik a trip to the nearby town of Stavern is a good idea. It is a beautiful little town with a great waterfront. For more information and a couple of photos, check out my Stavern Travelogue at the bottom of this page. Leave a Comment
