Sheeps

by munki

There are over 2 millions sheeps in Norway. Dala is the most seen sheep with approximately 45% of the Norwegian sheep population.Sheeps sometimes like to gather together next to road and to eat the grass and plants of the gutters. In some areas they are used to the traffic but still is advisable to reduce your speed.

Road gutters

by munki

Be careful with hidden road gutters by overgrown vegetation when parking your car. After seeing a good photo shot opportunity I parked my car by the road to realize later I was stuck as one of the back wheels of the car was not making contact with the road surface.Luckily one helpful local tried his best to help me by pushing behind the car, after failing to move the car, despite not speaking any English, he told me in a very good Spanish: ‘Tengo un tractor’. Five minutes later the man was back with his tractor and put my car out of the danger zone. He refused to accept a packet of Ducados (Spanish cigarettes) as he was a no smoker.

Elks

by munki

The timber industry is the one to blame for the deforestation of Norway and the decline in numbers of predators such as wolf, bear and lynx. However elks are one of the few mammals which has benefited from it, the cut of the trees allow new pastures for the elks who has to be culled every year.Elks are a great danger on Norwegian roads, many cars have been completely crushed under the impact of this massive animal. In wooded parts of Norway, drivers must be very careful at dusk and night, when the elk tend to move around a lot.

Beer = ARGHHH!!!!!

by boltonian

You probably know that beer is expensive. Your looking at between £4-£6 for HALF a litre in bars.In liquor stores, expect to pay about £3-£4 a can, though if you search, I found Tuborg Lager at £1.70 per can. Also, be aware, while you can buy beer at 18, you must be 20 to buy spirits. Also, you may not buy beer from shops after 8pm weekdays, 6pm Sat and NOT AT ALL on Sundays ARGHHHHHH!!!!

Terrible travel days Part 2: June-December

by Saagar

Part 2 of the series of Days Thou Shalt Stay Off the Roads in Norway:June 7th, a 2005 Special: 100th anniversary of Norway as an independent state; expect trouble. But in 2006 again you wouldn't have known - it's not a holiday.June 23rd: St.Hans, it is supposed to be the Mid-summer Festival, but that is actually on the 21st, and plainly forgotten. Public transport schedules are not affected, but everybody is in a party mood and beaches and local transportation may be full. This is a night party, so daytime is fine.Merchants' and city authorities' summer markets and closures of the city centres take place between late June and end of July, only locally advertised and for a limited time. July: 3 last weeks - fellesferien (The Common Summer Holiday). Ouch, don't try to get out on the road the first and last day of this summer holiday period. Those days are terrible for hitchhikers as well -...

SAS/Braathens internet bookings

by Saagar

The internet booking and generally web pages of SAS are terrible. They are made to have you browse around for solutions and info, not for getting your bookings done. It has always been like this in my experience, and I have never managed to get one done (mind you, I have done it on other airlines, several times). The format doesn't always fit the request, and the numbers from cards don't fit the format, so you are always turned back. If you call them for booking, they slap on a percentage on the price. If you really want to do internet booking, try the airline company Norwegian instead of the SAS maze.Their Eurobonus bonus travel program never worked with online booking. Also, the fax option is ignored.

Wasps!

by Marpessa

Coming from Australia I am used to flies and bees and the occasional wasp. In Norway wasps are as common as flies are in Australia, they were everywhere (I didn't get stung though). So just beware of wasps.
