Be careful of goats and sheep!

by himalia11

Even if there is no warning sign, you should drive carefully. You can see goats, sheeps and cows quite often on the roads. We didn't see an elk, though. And if you meet a whole herd, you need to have patience. The animals don?t care that you want to pass?

Toilets to Share!

by SMILLA76

Local custom, tourist trap or danger tip? Not sure yet, BUT...Toilets in Norway are not always what you expect them to be! And I do not mean by this that nature isn't good enough for me. It's only that I was surprised to discover on the beautiful island of Gåsvær, for instance, that toilets had two seats inside the same 'booth'. Even in more 'public' places like pubs and universities, toilets tend to be for both gents and ladies, or if they are not, the Norwegians make them become so. I have seen people 'tresspassing' freely...Well... Maybe it is just another way of the locals to say that ,up here on the world map, people have nothing to hide. Anyway watch out whom you're sharing with! I hope they make it a wonderful and unforgettable 'sharing' experience for you! Enjoy!

Remember the tires

by jonkb

Driving in Norway is generally safe, but remember to change to wintertires during the winter. If you don't you may end up in hospital with a rather large bill. The rental firms should tell you about this.If you're going to drive in rural Norway on the winter, consider to buy a sett of wheelchains (norwegian: hurtigkjettinger). They can really save your day on slippery and snowy roads. Ask the people you buy it from how, when and where you should use them.

Reindeers and Elks

by Leipzig

Watch your speeding. Suddenly reindeers or elks cross the street without paying attention to you. In the south roadsigns like this one indicate areas where those animals live, in the north you have to pay attention everywhere!

Never enough of these ...

by diocletianvs

Norway is an expensive country. For one night in a hotel in Oslo I can rent an appartment in Zagreb for a month. The ticket for the Oslo airport train costs the same as a train return ticket between Zagreb and Budapest. I had a lunch in Stockholm for a price of a sandwich in Trondheim. The train ride between Oslo and Bergen is 4 times more expensive than a Ryanair ticket between Oslo and London.... If you notice that prices for fruits in some supermarkets are similar to those in your homecountry check again. They are most probably prices per one piece and not per kilo as you would expect.... (It happened to me). In short: you'll need a lot of kroner here. (Bring everything you can carry from your home country). The only thing that I found cheaper than in Croatia is ice cream. Especially if you buy big 2 liter boxes.

Ice

by diocletianvs

One look at the map and everyone sees that with a country situated so up in the North you can expect hard winter weather and lots of snow. But in fact thanks to the Gulf stream it's pretty warm in Norway compared to the places in similar geographical locations. Sure they have lots of snow in Norway. But snow is not something strange in the rest of Europe as well. You have snow, you try to clean it, put some sand or salt on it so that it doesn't freeze.... do everything that you can to make things normal. Everywhere but in Norway! It is not the snow that will surprise you. It is the total ignorance of Norwegians to snow transforming slowly into slippery ice cover on the roads and pavements will amaze you. To clean the snow? But why oh why??? When we can have thick ice cover on all our pavements untill April? If you intend to walk in Norway in the winter be prepared for some acrobatics....

Look Out for Those Animals... ;-)

;-)= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =English: Camping by this lake was lovely. We have enough dead tourists lying around

by Kjetil

Wonderful Norwegian nature brings out the beast in many foreign visitors. If you really must go skiing in the mountains, fishing in the ocean or base jumping from a cliff, you should be well prepared. In addition to our beautiful nature, we have a wide selection of not-quite-as-beautiful weather conditions, and if you are five kilometers from shore in an open boat, happily filling it (the boat) with codfish when you encounter a storm - you may end up as a wet corpse. Tourists get lost in our mountains all the time. When a Norwegian tells you to be careful - please, PLEASE!!!, listen!

GUST OF WIND!!!

by tales

Perhaps when we arrived to Capo Nord the weather was cloudy and very cold!!There was few visibility, so we didn't appreciate completely the wonderful landscape of this place!Above all there was a terrible wind!I had fear to appear me at the railing, in fact there were a lot of signs with the warning of danger!Anyway for me it was a fantastic moment! I felt to be in a unique place!

Be carefull!

by daarth

Be carefull! Norway can be adictive :-)Actually, if you stay too long in the nature, you might see trolls, gnomes and wood nymphs. In any case, you will understand Norwegian folkelore....The real ones are shy of tourists. You only see them in the twilight hour walking alone far from people. You might be lured into the woods by a "huldre", so fair and beautiful. Only a mental image of a cold shower will keep you one the path. Or maybe a forest "nisse" will be up to his pranks and confuse your path so you get lost. Those of us that are used to these creatures just smile and wave to them and they wave back. Can't really blame them for trying. There are so few left.... Their existence is totally dependent on people believing in them. You best not be spotted by the trolls though.... If you are spotted by one you have to keep dodging him till the sun comes up. Not very hard if you are smart,...
