RUSSIA: Mandrogi

by globetrott

Nizhniye Mandrogi or simply Mandrogi is the name of a small island in one of the many rivers that you will cruise through when you make a cruise between Moscow and St. Petersburg. They call it a "green stop" and in fact you land at a place, where you cannot do anything else than to get out of the ship and walk in an artificial village, that was obviously built at least partly by artists, painters, sculpturers etc. and therefore you will find a lot of fancy houses there. You will have about 2-3 hours there in order to explore the island on your own, depending on the timetable of your cruiseship. There is a Vodka-museum as well, a place to learn about Vodka and taste or buy various kinds of Vodka as a souvenir (my last picture).

RUSSIA: Gorodez

by globetrott

Gorodets is really far away from the ordinary tourist-streams and in fact time seems to have stood still there in many ways. Gorodez is a great halfday-trip from Nizny Nowgorod, situated just about 30 km north-east of Nizny Novgorod and I got there on a fullday-tour organized by our cruiseship „M/S Furmanov“ during a cruise from Perm to Moscow.Gorodez is an old town and already a long time ago the inhabitants started a special kind of business: woodcarvings and other artful decorations of all things that were used for everyday life. Some of the best products and works of art, made in Gorodez, are shown nowadays in the town-museum, that is to be found just a few steps from the Lenin-monument.The Samowar-museum is easy to be found, when you walk through town, close to the river, because it is inside one of the most beautifully decorated houses of Gorodez, see it in my main photo here...

RUSSIA: Shlissel'burg / Schluesselburg

by globetrott

Whats that, a russian castle that obviously has a german name ? Yes, and it is even listed as a UNESCO-World-heritage !Shlissel'Burg is an interesting fortress that you will pass by, when taking a cruise between St. Petersburg and Moscow ! The historic fortress is dating back to the 13th century and it was built in order to protect the place where the river Newa joins Lake Ladoga. It had another name first but was renamed "Schluesselburg" by Peter the Great in 1702. Schluessel means "key" and Peter saw in this fortress the key to defending Russia and to conquer Finnland. You will pass by this fortress in a short distance like I did, when taking a rivercruise between Moscow and St. Petersburg, we had left St. Petersburg at 05.00pm and reached this fortress at around 10.45pm. Ships going from Moscow to St. Petersburg will pass it in the morning, as most of them arrive in St. Petersburg in...

The Mosel

by travelfrosch

Not as famous as the Rhine, the Mosel valley is more peaceful with views almost as, if not as, spectacular is its more famous neighbor. Enjoy a leisurely drive, boat ride, or train ride along the stretch between Trier and Koblenz. Explore Trier with its Roman ruins, Cochem with its fine views and its "castle," or sample the fine Riesling wine from towns such as Traben-Trarbach, Bernkastel-Kues, and Piesport. You can get a taste of the Mosel from my Traben-Trarbach page.

Munich

by pepples46

Munich is a beautiful, historical and quite expensive place to visit. why do I say expensive..because it is. but it is all worth it.Oktoberfest ..well it starts in last week in September, Biergartens, Music scene, Theater and Opera.shopping till you drop territory around Theatiner Strasse, Kaufinger and the very expensive meile..Maximilian Strasse. after all that you need to sit down, have Weisswurst ( special bavarian sausage )and a Brezel and a Mass ( Beer) handle. walk along the Isar, doesn't cost you a cent and if you like you can drop your clothes too..is a local custom in Munich.rent a bike at the Isartor Platz, discover the City..Englischer Garten, Schwabing.ion Sundays, when the Shops are closed, they do close on Sat. 1pm.....so on sunday, go to the Museum, Pinakothek..1, 2 and now the new one..3 in all. no entrance fee on Sundays.if you need more info...I have a separate Munich...

Niederösterreich > Wachau > Spitz an der Donau

by globetrott

Spitz an der Donau is in a distance of about 5 Km from Dürnstein. The village offers plenty of hotels and restaurants and is also famous for it's wonderful church. The church dates back to the 14th century and has plenty of great paintings and sculptures, BUT the artists are unknown, as during one of the many wars in the medieval times all documents have disappeared. In Spitz you also have the possibility to cross the Danube on a car-ferry .Spitz has its own train-station ( www.oebb.at )

CROATIA - Plitvice National Park

by globetrott

Plitvice Lakes and National Park are my best memory of a vacation in my childhood. These lakes on different levels are combined with each other by lots of small or large waterfalls and a long path is leading through the national park, taking you to all the important places, including a large cave that once gave the background to an old western movie. You will find a camping-site and a hotel directely at the lake, its a paradise for children with flat and clear water. All of these old photographs were taken in 1967 by myself or any of brothers. For more pics and infos - click on my link below and have a look on my Plitvice-page

Another great little square

by Maryimelda

Some of Europe's smaller towns will have one main square which doubles as a "little square" as well. One that springs to mind is the litte town square in Hallstatt in Austria. It is surrounded by lovely little restaurants and shops and is very pretty indeed. My hotel room overooked this square, so I was doubly fortunate. It's very easy to find, just about 50 meters from the ferry terminal.
