The Little Squares

by Maryimelda

Of course Europe is well known for its famous array of grand squares which adorn most, if not all of the big cities. I have stood mouth agape in many of them in the course of my European holidays. But many of those same cities and indeed, the smaller cities, towns and villages have numerous "little" squares which are delightful places to sit and eat a crusty roll 'avec le fromage et le jambon' and people watch at the same time.Paris is especially renowned for its "little squares" which can be found in abaundance all over the city. One of my favourites in Paris is the Place de la Contrescarpe which can found right near the oft called "ancient" Rue Mouffetard in the 5 eme. If Rue Mouffetard is on your things to do list in Paris, be sure to take a few minutes to sit in this lovely little square and watch the world go by.

Hidden Gems: Dinkelsbuehl, Germany

by Maryimelda

Dinkelsbuehl is to me, like Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber's baby sister. Situated a short distance away from Rothenburg on the Romantischestrasse, Dinkelsbuehl is a sheer delight. It is a little difficult to get to by public transport as there is no train line right to the town. You can get there by bus from either Rothenburg or as I did, from nearby Noerdlingen. If you are driving, then of course, you don't have a problem. The town can be seen in less than a day, which is why most people just pass through. I stayed overnight however, and I am glad I did. This is another of those places which are lovely to roam after the crowds have gone home, not that I felt that there was a crowd there anyway. You can even do a Nightwatchman Tour in Dinkelsbuehl, which is fun.See my Dinkelsbuehl page for more info on this hidden gem.http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/d7596/10caf/

Leuven..birthplace of Stella Artois

by Maryimelda

Leuven is a university town in Belgium and is home to the oldest existing Catholic University in the world. It is also renowned for its famous breweries and of course is the birthplace of the world famous Stella Artois beer. This town suffered greatly at the hands of the Germans during two world wars, but its spirit survived and the town was restored both times.Another well known feature of Leuven is the Grand Beguinage of Leuven. This is a village dating back to the 13th century which contains about 12 streets and is situated pretty much in the middle of the town. This was originally home to unmarried women who wanted to live religious lives but not necessarily as professed nuns. Today it is a World Heritage Site and is owned by the Catholic university. It houses many students.Naturally, with all the students living there, Leuven is a party town and boasts both the longest and the...

Hidden Gems: Donegal Town, Ireland

by Maryimelda

Donegal Town can be found at the foot of the Barnesmouth Mountains on the banks of the River Eske where it flows into Donegal Bay, in the far north west of Ireland. To me this is the ultimate Irish town, the one that all the stories are written about. The hub of the little town is The Diamond and the best way I can describe this is the Town Square in the round.Donegal is home to Donegal Castle which dates back to the early 16th century and has in recent times, undergone major renovations. It is open to visitors from mid-June to October from 9.30am to 6.30pm.I love to go to Donegal Town to shop. The atmosphere is so amazing there. Probably the most renowned shop in the town is Magees right in The Diamond. Magees is famous for its beautiful Donegal Tweed clothing and accessories, not to mention Irish Linen, Waterford crystal and a wonderful restaurant as well. The town is also home to many...

Hidden Gems:Tobernalt Holy Well,Co. Sligo Ireland

by Maryimelda

The Holy Well is one of the most peaceful places that I have ever had the privilege to visit. I go there every time I visit Ireland. Situated at the South West corner of Lough Gil in Co. Sligo, the site was used by Catholics during the penal times when they were not allowed by law to practise their faith. It is certainly not on the tourist path in Ireland, but if you are on a driving tour in the area, I can certainly recommend that you visit. Of special interest to Catholics of course, it has a beautiful stone altar and markers all around the site for the praying of the rosary.

Hidden Gems: Tiefburg, Handschuhsheim, Germany

by Maryimelda

This is a wonderful old castle located in a suburban street near Heidelberg at a place (a suburb, I guess) called Handscuhsheim. I was taken to Tiefburg by VTer christine.j who knows more about hidden gems than anyone I have ever met. I refer you to Christine's Heidelberg page to read her wonderful stories about this castle. There are two very interesting, (bordering on blood curdling in spots) legends she relates which I can highly recommend. Once you've read about Tiefburg on christine's page, you will be putting it on your wishlist for a visit in the future, I can assure you.

Hidden Gems: Saarburg, Germany

by Maryimelda

This little treasure is the best kept secret in Germany. A wonderful old town that has a very colourful history and a waterfall running right through the middle of the town square. I saw it in an afternoon and it was an afternoon I will never forget. It is a short train ride from Trier, so if ever you find yourself with an afternoon to spare whilst you're staying in Trier, then this is the place to go. For more details, please see my Saarburg page, you will be amazed.

Hidden Gems: St Jean Pied de Port, France

by Maryimelda

Situated on the River Nive in the far south west of France at the foot of the Pyrenees, and more specifically at the foot of the pass over the Pyrenees to Ronscavelles in Spain. The name St Jean Pied de Port translates to "St John at the foot of the pass."This lovely little town is most famous these days for being the starting point to the Camino Frances of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. Every day you will find dozens of pilgrims loading up and heading out on their 500 mile journey to Santiago de Compostela. I sat and watched them from the veranda of a little cafe/hotel once back in 2002 and wished so much that I could be going with them. However, I got the consolation prize and drove the Camino over the next two days. Age and bad knees have put an end to my dream of walking the Camino Frances, but at least I can savour my memories of all the wonderful places I visited along the...

The Museum Tiroler Bauernhoefeis the most interesting attraction of Kramsach in Tirol: its a great collection of tyrolean farmhouses that were taken from all parts of Tirol, including South-Tirol that is a part of Italy nowadays. These houses were rebuilt again in groups like small villages and you can walk through and take a look inside the houses that are fully functional with all the furniture and machineries. There are partly farm-animals as well, so this museum is also a great place to visit for children !The museum is open for visitors :from Palm-Sunday (=1 week before easter) till October 31stdaily from 09.00am till 06.00pm, last entry is at 05.00pm !adults pay 5,50 euros Familycard is 11,- for 2 adults and all their children !--------------------------------The adress is : A-6233 Kramsach - Angerberg 10click here for a map!Kramsach is a village between Kufstein and Innsbruck,...
