THE HIDDEN STATUE IN VENICE

by DAO

La Donna Partigiana. That’s her official name. She is one of the most intriguing statues in the world, and one of the best hidden. In high tide this forlorn statue is submerged under the dark green waters of the lagoon. In low tide and sunlight she looks like a large piece of metal seaweed lying on stone steps. Look closer. You will see the shape of a body of a woman. This is a monument to the women killed fighting in WWII. Very few statues were ever erected to women who died during the world wide conflict of WWII. And no statue tells this story of secrecy and sadness better than this. You will find her at the Riva Dei Sette Martiri (Castello area, at the water’s edge).

You never get bored in a motorhome! You can now buy or hire some really luxurios ones. I once did 13 country's in six weeks, but it's nice to take your time and explore. You can always stay in a hotel if you want some static luxury. With time on your hands I can't think of anything better!

Madurodam, Netherlands

by darkjedi

Madurodam is a miniature city located in Scheveningen, The Hague, in the Netherlands. It is a model of a Dutch town on a 1:25 scale, composed of well known and famous Dutch buildings that are found at various locations in the country. Just 15 minutes by tram from Den Haag central station means this site is easy to get to and has many other things to see nearby ensuring its popularity. This major Dutch tourist attraction was built in 1952 and has been visited by tens of millions of visitors since then. The miniature city was named after George Maduro, a law student from Curaçao who fought the Nazi occupation forces as a member of the Dutch resistance and died at Dachau concentration camp in 1945. . His parents donated the money to start the Madurodam project.

Catch the Northern Lights in Iceland

by Odinnthor

You would want to enjoy other things as well as trying to catch the Northern Lights. May I recommend my country, - Iceland. If you do not see the Lights, at least you are in a great place to visit with endless things to do. Great places to visit and great nightlife. As a kid growing up there, I used to lay on my back and watch and wonder at the magificent lightshow. To attempt to describe them is futile. They have to be seen. Arnstadt

by margaretvn

This is a lovely little city with a beautifully (partially) restored historic centre. There is the church where J.S.Bach had his first employment. Near the square is a square with a lovely halftimbered apotheke and a Baroque palace which is now a museum. On the square is this statue on Bach as a young man. There is also an early Gothic church and a Baroque - today this houses the wax museum. We thought it worth a short visit - and listened to the organist playing in the church Bach once played in.

Orvieto

by margaretvn

Really this is perhaps a "must see" but we passed it unplanned and are so glad we had time to stop for a night.Orvieto is on the top of an isolated rock at a height of 195 metres above the junction of the rivers Paglia and Chiana in Umbria. The city origins date back to the Etruscan civilisation. Indications of the settlement going back to the 9th century BC were found in the caves under the city. In the 3rd century BC the city was annexed to the territories of Rome and it stayed under Roman domination until the decline of the Roman Empire. It then became a free city and remained faithful to the pope. During medieval times many of the cities lovely buildings were made. The cathedral is probably the most important and is Gothic, with work begun on it in 1290. It was built to commemorate “the miracle of Bolsena”. Bolsena is a town to the southwest of Orvieto. It was there in 1263 that a...

Skerries town

by chatskerries

As you enter Skerries by road from Dublin the first sight you meet is the famous round about. There is an old path next to the bridge that runs along the rail tracks. You start out a steep walk up a hill where you get real close up and personal with trains passing right next to you. Soon you'll come to a road I believe called tuckers hill not sure but there are primroses on each side of the road framing the banks. The road frames Skerries Golf course. Enjoy the view of the green as you head around back into Skerries running into fields of trees and farms.
