Lake Como, Italy

by travelfrosch

Another favorite of American travel guru Rick Steves, this area about an hour north of Milan is definitely worth a look. While you can stay on the south tip in the town of Como, My personal recommendation is to stay mid-lake. From Milan, take the local train in the direction of Tirano. Get off at Varenna-Esino. From there, you can take a ferry to Menaggio or Bellagio, or stay right in Varenna. The primary thing to do here is relax, stroll, and eat gelato (ice cream). But there are some good hiking trails in the area which can provide excellent views. Taking the ferry itself is an activity, allowing you to take in some impressive views, including the southern edge of the Swiss Alps. Before you go, take a look at the Rick Steves website and look at his tour schedule. Be sure to visit this area on days his tour isn't in town, as it can be tricky to find a hotel when a tour group is in town....

England: Cheshire: Jodrell Bank

by darkjedi

Even if you have even a passing interest in space science you have to visit here. Deep in the Cheshire countryside lies this vast radio telescope. Built in 1957 it was the largest radio telescope in the world and even today holds the title of 3rd largest. There is an educational visitors' centre at the site, which covers the history of Jodrell Bank and also has a 3D theatre hosting trips to Mars. There is also a path around the Lovell telescope, approximately 20 m from the telescope's outer railway, which hosts a number of information boards explaining how the telescope works and the research that is done with it. The visitor's centre also organizes a series of public outreach events, including public lectures, star parties and "ask an astronomer" sessions.

Ærø, Denmark

by travelfrosch

Just south of Denmark's Funen is the small, peaceful island of Ærø. Accessible only by ferry from Fåborg, Svendborg, or Rudkøbing, this island features windswept sea views, ideal for driving, walking, or biking. There's not a lot to "do" here, but that's part of its charm. It is an ideal place to relax and take a "vacation from your vacation."Ærø's main town, Ærøskøbing, features centuries-old architecture and narrow, cobblestoned streets to explore. You can visit a small museum (ship-in-bottle fans are in for a real treat), buy groceries and baked goods, enjoy homemade ice cream... or even sample some of the locally-brewed Ærø beer. For more information, take a look at my Ærø page.

Appenzell Region, Switzerland

by travelfrosch

An overlooked area of Switzerland is the canton of Appenzell-Innerrhoden. This remote and traditional area south of St Gallen has its share of lush pastures, rolling hills, and pretty lakes. While the hills and mountains are not as towering as in other parts of Switzerland, the views are nevertheless impressive.Especially during summer, you will find crowds in the main town of Appenzell. But if you head south out of town towards Wasserauen, you'll find a number of remote guesthouses at Ebenalp and the Seealpsee, allowing you plentiful hiking trails with relatively few other tourists. Evenings can get lively, however, as locals walk their way up to the guesthouse pubs to enjoy music, relaxation, and tasty Appenzeller beer. This area is easily reached from Zürich Airport (ZRH) by train with a transfer in Gossau. Regular trains also run from St Gallen to Appenzell. For a bit more information,...

Wales, Tintern

by darkjedi

The Cistercian abbey of Tintern is one of the greatest monastic ruins of Wales. Tintern's crowning glory, its great church, was built between 1269 and 1301. It stands today much as it did then, apart from it's lack of a roof, window glass and internal divisions. In 1348 the Black Death swept the country and, although we have no direct evidence for its impact on Tintern, the effects are clear. It became almost impossible to attract new recruits for the lay brotherhood. In the 1500s monastic life in England and Wales was brought to an abrupt end by the political actions of King Henry VIII. The Dissolution of the Monasteries was part of the king's policy to establish total control over the church in his realm. But in addition to severing links with Rome, their suppression was a considerable source wealth to the crown.

The Faroe Islands

by travelfrosch

This remote corner of Europe, a small chain of islands between Iceland and Scotland, is a bit difficult to get to, but worth the trip. You will likely encounter lots of rain and wind whenever you come here, but hiking opportunities abound, as do plenty of opportunities to get close to nature. In the surprisingly cosmopolitan capital of Tórshavn, you get a chance to have a home base with plenty of comforts and numerous bus and ferry routes at your command to make day-trips. A quick ferry ride to the island of Nólsoy transports you to a rural and remote world with plenty of tremendous scenic hikes. On one particularly remote island, Mykines, you will get an unprecedented opportunity to see lots of puffin up close while marveling at cliff side views to the sea.For more detailed information, go to the Faroe Islands website, or take a look at my Faroe Islands VT page.
