Bern - The capital of Switzerland

by globetrott

Most people think that Zuerich is the capital of Switzerland, but in fact Bern is the capital, although Zurich has a lot more inhabitants.Bern is not far from Interlaken and on a clear day you will have a great view of the alps there.Take a look at my photographs :On the main picture is Marktgasse, the main shopping-street with lovely arcades at both sides of the street, that will guarantee easy shopping also during snow and rain. There are also a lot of lovely fountains and in the back : Zytglocketurm with a clock and chimes2) the townhall of Bern3The view of Bern from Rosengarten4)Looking down from Bundesterrasse to the river Aare5)The entrance of Berner Muenster, the cathedral of Bern, this church is really worth a visit !

Schloss Spiez, a great palace

by globetrott

The castle is the best tourist-attraction of Spiez in my personal opinion. The oldest walls are dating back to the 10th century, but the castle was rebuilt and renovated several times and so you will mainly see the architecture of the 18th century there nowadays with fancy baroque furniture and ornate decorations, lovely stucco-works and frescos, and what is the very best news for VT-ers : you may take as many pics as you want !You can walk around the castle on your own and will see interesting exhibits of different centuries. While you are exploring the interior of the Schloss Spiez, a lot of steps will lead you upwards to the tower of the castle and I may really highly recomend to take these extra-steps for an excellent panorama-view of the vinyards next to the castle , the village of Spiez with the Niesen in the back and the lovely Thunersee. The tower dates back to the year 1200 and is...

Aareschlucht - for a rainy day maybe

by globetrott

Aareschlucht is strongly advertised at many places and it might make sense to go there, in case that you have seen all of the beautiful places around Brienz and Interlaken already and maybe the weather is not good enough to go hiking in the mountains. In Aareschlucht it will be quite dark and wet anyway because it is a gorge, where the river Aare flows through a rather narrow valley - at first the rocks on both sides of the gorge are in a distance of 200 meters and at the end you may touch the rocks on both sides at the same time. 1400 meters of artificial paths, tunnels and bridges are leading you through the gorge. In my personal opinion Aareschlucht is somehow over-rated and only recommendable, when you have not seen similar places like Truemmelbach in Lauterbrunnen first. From Meiringen you may take the train to Aareschlucht West and walk down the gorge, or you may park your car at...

Meiringen : Merinque & Sherlock Holmes

by globetrott

Meiringen is the place where "Merinque" was created first and it is also a special place for all fans of Sherlok Holmes, who died here according to one of the books of his author. In der very centre of Meiringen you can see the world's first authentic replica of the living-room of Sherlock Holmes in Bakerstreet 221b. This replica was made according to the exlanations, given in the books and it includes all the small details beeing mentioned there. This room is shown in a small museum that includes plenty of other interesting Holmes-souvenirs, letters that were sent from all over the world to "Sherlock Holmes, Bakerstreet, London" etc.etc.etc.You really might get the feeling, Holmes was a real person, how else could they show his private things there...The Sherlock Holmes Museum is openMay-September : Tue-Sun 01.30-06.00p.m.October-April: 04.30-06.00p.m.Address: CH-3860 Meiringen c/o...

Kuessnacht, Hohle Gasse & Wilhelm Tell

by globetrott

Kuessnacht, not far from Luzern is the place where Wilhelm Tell killed Gessler according to the old ledgends. Hohle Gasse means "narrow pass" and when you enlarge my pictures, you will see how this is ment : This "Hohle Gasse" was the only way for Gessler to ride up and down from his castle, high above Lake Lucerne. So it was easy for Wilhelm Tell to wait behind the bushes for the right moment to kill Gessler, who could not be protected by his guards in this very moment, because they had to ride in front or behind of him.At one end of the Hohle Gasse there is the Tell-chapel and at the lower end there is a a small museum with a few exhibits and explanations. This museum is open all the timeit is made just by a few windows inside a house without doors----------------------------------Hohle Gasse is a bit outside of the village, BUT plenty of signposts will lead you there. The distance to...

Bachalpsee for the great reflection in the lake

by globetrott

Bachalpsee is a scenic alpine lake high above Grindelwald and you can take the cablecar from Grindelwald to First in order to get there. Bachalpsee is one of the most beautiful mountain-lakes of the area and you will see it at many postcards and posters with the mountains reflecting in the lake like in a mirror. It is a pity that on my picture there are also a few clouds, but at least it was sunny. From Bachalpsee you will get to the mountain-station of the First cablecar within 45 minutes - the path is easy and rather flat, with fine gravel and no rocks - a small street, that could also be used by wheelchairs and Kinderwagen, bikes etc. When you intend to take a picture of the reflecting mountains, you have to step down to the water-level and take the picture from there !!Bachalpsee is in a height of 2265 meters above sea-level, 45 minutes to walk from the First-station, and high above...

Giessbach : the Grandhotel at the waterfalls

by globetrott

Giessbach Faelle / Waterfalls are the main natural sight of Giessbach. You will find them opposite of Brienz, at the southern shore of Brienzersee falling down the hill in several cascades. You may go there by car via Brienzwiler, BUT going there by ship is certainly the best , because the road to Giessbach is really quite narrow and also a bit dangerous with oncoming trafic, because only at a very few places 2 cars may pass by each other. When you arrive by ship you may take a little walk of 15 minutes or take the funicular to the Grandhotel Giessbach, where the most interesting part of the cascades starts. There is a path along all of these waterfalls and you may even step behind one of the water-falls and look down to the hotel.

Schynigge Platte to First : a great fullday-hike

by globetrott

When you have a fullday to spend in the mountains and when the weather is fine, I may highly recommend to take this scenic hike : You will start in Wilderswil, (close to Interlaken) and take first the old train to Schynigge Platte and start hiking from there to First, a mountain high above Grindelwald. Of course you can do it also from the other side, by cablecar to First, walk towards the Faulhorn ( that part is quite steep and exhausting) and follow the path to Weberhuette and Schynigge Platte. The total hike from First is about 6 hours and somehow I think it is better to go up at Schyniggeplatte from Wilderswil (next to Interlaken) and walk to First.Just be careful, the last cablecar from First is at 05.00p.m., the last train from Schynigge Platte is normally at 06.00p.mAll of these photographs were made in this hike in October 2006 ! It was quite exhausting but a great adventure as...

Unterseen for cheaper hotelrooms in Interlaken

by globetrott

Unterseen used to be a small village a long time before Interlaken existed at all. Nowadays everybody is going to Interlaken and Unterseen became just a suburb of Interlaken. When it comes to cheaper hotelprices Unterseen is a good choice without loosing all of the great transportations-means of Interlaken, it is actually all the area of Interlaken north of the river Aare and you will still see real farmers there in the middle of the village. Unterseen is where most of the local people are living, it has a lovely townsquare, a beautiful medieval church and many great hiking-paths, also along the river Aare and towards Neuhaus , at the Thunersee / Lake Thun.
