Poznan and Warszawa

by venenorojo

Although I never had been travelled to Poland if I did not had to work there... I didn't regret. It was a nice trip to two fascinating cities.Poznan is so old and ancient that it's just beautiful. You will see quite a lot of historical houses, public buildings and churches, that you don't know where to look at... It's wonderful.Warszawa is more a modern city... and for all the ladies over here: You cannot believe how fine you can go shopping there!!!

Everybody's favourites

by evaanna

Like all (I think) Polish people, I love storks. These big black and white birds build their nests on the roofs of barns or farmhouses and, as they are supposed to bring good luck and... babies, are always welcome by farmers. Some of them even place a wheel of an old wooden cart on their roof or the nearest electricity pylon to attract the birds. My husband's uncle had a special pole erected with a round structure at the top close to his country house and the birds did settle there at first. But they did not stay long, perhaps they got bored as there was no one to watch there until June - it's just a summer cottage. Some of my fondest memories are connected with storks: having our dinner at The Kacperek in Mazury with a stork in his nest just opposite, watching another stork out for a walk and frog-hunting right in front of our bungalow in Babieta (also Mazury) and the nest on a barn...

Down by the river

by Elodie_Caroline

This should really be on a 'warnings and dangers' tip I reckon? If your dad has gone fishing on a big river and it`s dinner time, DO NOT try what I did ok!When we stayed in Poland, we stayed on a farm just outside of Warsaw with one of my dad's relatives for a few days or so. Just near the farmhouse was a great big river, my dad had gone fishing with his brothers on a boat. I heard my mum say that it was dinner time, so without thinking, remember, I was only 4 and a half years old at the time, I went wading into the river to fetch my dad!Luckily someone spotted me and came and grabbed me. It seems that if I had gone a few feet further, I would have dropped off of a great big underwater ledge, I couldn't even swim and still can't!

My first *love*

by Elodie_Caroline

My most favourite memory of being in Poland is a bitter sweet one of my young uncle Anjé .He was my dad's youngest brother and was only 17 when I went to Poland, I was only four and a half years old. He was tall with blond curly hair and he used to take me everywhere with him and his teenage friends, they used to spoil me rotten.I can remember going to a market with him and his friends one day and he bought me this little woven children's basket, in turn,I was teaching him the words of the song 'My darling Clementine' well, the chorus of 'Oh my darling' anyway...The day that we left to come back to England, I can remember crying my eyes out on the train, my family were very embarrassed, I was heartbroken. I wanted to stay in Poland and stay with my young uncle!. I loved him in my little girl's way and didn`t want to go without him. It's funny, I have never seen him again to this day, I...

CLIMATE

by Agnessa

There is usually a mild weather in Poland between May and October. That is a result of the mix of the east continental currents and the Mediterranean currents which inflow to Poland from the South and the West. In spring temperatures vary from 0 to 16oC (32-60,8oF) and it may often rain here. In May temperature rises to 18- 20oC (64,4o-68oF) and in summer it even jumps to 30oC (86oF). Fortunately, the summer is hardly ever tiring due to the frequent summer rains.Together with autumn comes the Golden Polish Autumn. The temperature drops to around 10oC (50oF). The weather is still nice but it might be rainy till November which comes with the wave of cold.In December days last only 8 hours and temperature may fall below 0oC (32oF).

Visa Application Form

by Agnessa

Since 1989 Poland has been withdrawing many visa restrictions. Nowadays citizens from most of the countries (e.g., the Czech Republic, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Great Britain, the USA) are allowed to stay in Poland without a visa for 90 days. After that period of time, all the necessary information concerning the further stay in Poland can be obtained from the Section for Foreigners of The Citizens Department of The Provincial Council: 00-263 Warszawa D³uga St. 5, tel.: +48/22/6956575The Polish Embassy in your country will provide you with all detailed information about the visas. You will find details of Emassies and Consulates addresses on the website od the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland http://www.msz.gov.pl/index.php?document=2 You can find visa application form ( in English, Spanish, German, French and Russian )...

Forest and beaches -great combination

by Ekaterinburg

We don't have many big forests in Ireland and one of the things I loved best about Poland was the fact that there were forests everywhere. The scent of a pine forest and the pleasure of walking under shady trees on a hot day are very high up on my list of favourite things and being able to enjoy these simple pleasures every day was a real bonus. Better again is the forest/ beach combo where you can sit under the trees and enjoy the sea views and breezes. The first forest we walked through had my eyes out on stalks. I could not believe all the beautiful wooden houses, just like the woodcutter's cottages in children's storybooks.

Baltic Sunsets.

by Ekaterinburg

We all love a good sunset and sunset over the sea is always worth watching. I don't know if there's a special quality to Baltic light but it seemed to me that the sunsets in this area were really high up on the colour spectrum. Every evening without fail there was a spectacular sunset - perfect ends to perfect days. I think the sunset at Debki , the evening we arrived would have to be among my fondest memories of Poland. The whole day had been one great experience after the other and such a wonderful sunset was definitely the icing on the cake.

Open air markets

by gosiaPL

In Poland we keep up the tradition of open air markets. Some of them may be in tourist areas and sell local craft and art, but the "real" markets (or bazaars) are those where local people buy their goods: fruit, vegetables, other groceries, and even clothes and shoes and more!If you'd like to taste this particular local flavour, ask around wherever you find yourself in Poland. There's bound to be a market like this! :-)

Telecommunications - Mobiles

by gale.blog.pl

There are three mobile operators in Poland at present (I'm writing this in May 2003):- Orange (former Idea) (owned by Telekomunikacja Polska and France Telecom),- Era (owned among others by Vivendi and Deutsche Telecom),- Plus GSM (owned among others by Vodafone and TeleDanmark). All three operate in GSM 900/1800.You'll probably be most interested in roaming and prepaid services.ROAMING: Plus GSM is the leader in Poland as far as number of roaming partners' number is concerned.PREPAID: There are five prepaid brands:- Pop - in Orange network,- Tak Tak - in Era network,- Simplus - in Plus GSM network,- Heyah- Sami SwoiPricing is very similar in all networks. I'll recommend Simplus, at present the cheapest starter kit including a phone, card and PLN 30 (EUR 7.5) credit costs PLN 155 (EUR 40). ...and I work for Plus GSM :)))
