Gdañsk

by nuru

Gdañsk is my home town, and unfortunately it is not included within the data base. It is located in the North of Poland, by the Bay of Gdañsk (part of the Baltic Sea). Gdañsk, together with two neighbouring cities of Sopot and Gdynia forms a unit called Tricity.

My Polish ancestors

by Elodie_Caroline

I love this photograph! it was taken in the very late 1930's or early 1940's. It is of my dad's family at that time. When we were visiting my dad one afternoon in the Summer of 2004 he showed this to me, as he reckoned that I looked like his mother when she was much younger than on this photo. I felt quite honoured and asked him if I could borrow the photo to put on my computer? of course he said yes. I just loved it because it is where my roots are from I suppose?(I have to admit; I don't know how to spell the Polish names, so am spelling them as they sound ok)From left to right: My uncle Michael, two Russian friend's of the family, my aunty Stasha, my Polish grandmother and grandfather, then at the front is aunty Zosha and uncle Bogdan. My dad was away in the war when this photograph was taken, and my uncle Anjé didn't make an appearance until late in the 1940's.

Poor old great grandfather!

by Elodie_Caroline

The Polish Winters can be very harsh with very deep snow and have well below freezing teperatures. My dad told me this story of my great grandfather when I was quite young. The great grandfather, my own father's grandfather, went out one day in the middle of Winter to chop wood for the fire, this would have been in the late 19th or very early 20th century, but he never returned home again. They found him in the Spring of the next year, he was sat on a large rock and had frozen to death in the very deep and freezing snow. He had a smile frozen upon his face. They reckon that you hallucinate when you are dying of Hypothermia don't they, I wonder what he was seeing as the poor old soul died?

ATM - Cheat Sheet

by irvbur

Although ATM machines are to be found all over, the transaction is always in local currency. BE PREPARED. For example, do not go up to an ATM and think you'd like to withdraw $500 worth of local currency. You first must know the amount in local currency that $500 will buy. I always carry a currency cheat sheet when travelling. In addition to ATM transactions, it's also easier to bargain and make purchases. For a cheat sheet go to to http://www.oanda.com/cgi/convert/cheatsheet

Places of worship

by magor65

Any visitor coming to Poland will notice a huge number of churches, or I should rather say - places of worship. They are mostly Roman catholic, but protestant, orthodox or jewish ones are not very rare, either. Eastern Poland is rich in both synagogues and orthodox churches, whereas in southern Poland, especially in Little Poland, you can find some unique old wooden catholic churches which have been inscribed on UNESCO Heritage List. Lower Silesia can also boast of the churches included in the UNESCO List. These two Lutheran temples in Swidnica and Jawor, which are the largest timber-framed religious buildings in Europe, belong to the most unique places of worship I have ever seen. All over Poland there are thousands of churches - proud cathedrals or modest parish churches - they all have exciting stories to tell. I love visiting temples. Firstly, they have rich collections of works of...

Internet in Poland

by ZiOOlek

More than 10 million Poles in the age of 15 - 75 use Internet what is almost 30% of the population of Poland. About 50% of them use Internet every day or almost every day. Internet appeared in Poland in 1991 but almost until 1994 was only for academic needs. Internet in Poland is still expensive compering with annual incomes of citizens. It costs from about 10$ in cities and starts usually from 25$ in towns and villages where annual incomes are much smaller. There are Internet cafes in Poland. It seems to be enough of them and they are popular because not everyone may afford Internet at home. Prices are usually from 2 - 6 PLN. You can find higher prices in the city centers of big cities.
