Same same...

by Sharrie

WE gravitate towards the same values & taste. It is this very similarity between people that draws us together & probably binds us forever. In some society, the more & open & trusted societies, individual glory is being exemplified! In some ways, it encourages each & every one of us to work towards perfection. Yet, in other ways, it draws boundaries among people. But you know what... for me, on this trip, what makes Poland endearing is its Flaki - a beef tripe soup that tasted almost the same as the Chinese Dim Sum "steamed beef-tripe". If we eat similar food, how different can we be? ;-)

Pride & Prejudice

by Sharrie

Ok, this occured to me in Poland. So, it's appearing on this page instead of elsewhere. But for the rest of world, it could have been anywhere. We humans love to differentiate ourselves against the entire race, population or even the world. It's in the name of competition, vanity or ego!Yeah, sometimes we are not such beautiful spirits ;-)How we separate ourselves from the neighbors, cities, states, countries & races! We take pride in being "better" than the rest of the world. As if that truly matters in your spiritual growth! But we, including me, & many a times, me alone, are guillty of such acts. Acts which hold us to the view that that's what being a human being means! It striked like a bolt of lightning somewhat, that very day in Zakopane.Hey, we are all the same! Live in the same type of houses (designwise it's different, but they all involves a roof over the head, a shelter to...

Passing On

by Sharrie

There is life, there is death. It's basically a cycle. Just like seasons.I was in Zakopane for 2 nights.Zakopane is the resort gateway to Mt. Tatras National Park. It was where I realised given the right circumstances I am able to enjoy the simplest things in life just as much as the "big" things in life.2 "events" stand out:1) A visit to the cemetry.I was told to do so in Warsaw by Alina & Robert. Ok, I've been to many cemetries. Some very massive ones like those in Buenos Aires & Punta Arenas.I thought, well, if I find time I will.Actually, the visit was more to the small wooden church. But since it was so tiny, I just took a few steps further. In a cemetry, you often realise your own mortality. I think that's natural. & the thought "ultimately nothing matters".This time round, I didn't quite "see" death... but life.It was truly a "strange" but delightful experience.I noticed a lot of...

Exchanging money

by silver_puma

Not really relevant to this section - but I couldn't really find anywhere else to mention it & I thought it was important! It has been quite tricky to exchange UK pounds before travelling to Poland as you have to order the currency in advance etc. I recommend just taking your sterling with you and exchanging it when you get there at one of the 'Kantor's. They offer a really excellent rate & don't charge commission like the banks - they want the pounds! Just make sure you check how much money they have handed over to you before walking away. The beauty of the mountains & how great the food is there! The ice cream parlours and bakerys are to die for. I was also surprised by how nice these eateries are to look at as well - some really interesting and contemporary decoration!

EU enlargement - summit problems IV

by sphynxxs

rarely Warsaw looked so deserted. Even during the summer holidays in August, when many inhabitants of Warsaw take off for the Mazurian lakes, the seaside or the mountains, at least visitors from the province come to see the capital. Now, however, a spooky silence and emoty streets, closed shops and - as the schools had sent the kids home during the summit - many families heading off for a short trip outside the summit zone

Well, those wood plates made a good background for some graffiti at least. For while hundreds of antiglobalists flocked into Warsaw, their protest was peaceful and instead of stines, they only hurled rolls of toilet paper at the policemen who outnumbered them about 5:1 (the cops were clearly underworked and "amused" themselves giving speeding tickets to Warsovians - this made them less popular than the protesters.... the pigeons in the old town, on the other hand, grew fat as bored policemen threw crumbs of bread at them

EU enlargement - summit problems II

by sphynxxs

Some local media and politicians had raised hysteria - many businesspeople in downtown Warsaw were convinced the Economic Summit would draw hundreds of antiglobalists to Warsaw, many of them only too eager to smash windows. Instead of getting into a festive European mood, they barricaded shops and houses, covering the windows with wood plates

EU enlargement - summit problems

by sphynxxs

Unfortunately, the tight security measures during the European Economic Summit right before the enlargement fesitvities meant much of downtown Warsaw was barricaded off and tightly secured by police. while the european and Polish flags were fastened to buildings, there was hardly anyone allowed around to see them....

The night to first May is called Walpurgis night in some areas - the night of the witches and spirits, a pagan festival of rebirth. In 2004 it was the night of Poland' s (and nine other countries) return to Europe. On Friday evening people began to gather on Castle Square and in the old town

The wonderful nature of Polish People

by Pawtuxet

I can't say enough about the poeple of Poland. I have always found them to be the most helpful and welcoming people in my travels. There is a purity of spirit that amazes me in light of all they have had to endure throughout their history. One would never know their hardships when you encounter them along your way. This is the way I like to know a country or a place that I visit...through the simple human encounters...day to day experiences. It enriches my travels and I feel I've benefited more than just seeing monuments.Michael was the taxi driver we engaged for a half day out of Rzeszow. It was a short drive to Kolbuszowa, and he was as helpful as could be with his limited English. The hotel clerk said he enjoyed practicing his English, so he is enthusiastic about tourists like us. We all had lunch in a little neighborhood restaurant in Kolbuszowa..he helped us with the menu, and...
