Pensiveness

by bpwillet

Poland, the part I saw anyway, will always stick out in my mind. It really makes one think and put me in a mood of reflection. Travelling by train was definitely the way to go. I used a taxi in Oswiecim and the cab driver was a riot! The countryside is beautiful and the local houses and architecture really is unlike anything I had ever seen before. Riding the trains: during the day was beautiful. Thinking about the historical events that have occured in that country. There was a great old man on the train from Berlin to Katowice. He was great! He spoke no English and we didn't speak any Polish. But he was so patient and so nice. Really helpful.

Paying in Poland

by Leipzig

The official Polish currency is "Zloty". Official banknotes have a value of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 PLN; coins 1, 2, 5, 10, 50 grosz and 1, 2, 5 PLN. 1 PLN = 100 grosz. In 2004 Poland joins the European Union but not the European currency. In December 2003 one Zloty worth:0,22 Euro0,26 USDollars0,15 British PoundsCreditcards are accepted in some restaurants and on some petrolstations only. ATMs usually accept Mastercard, Eurocard and Visa (that's what I experienced).

Land of the storks

by Leipzig

I have never seen so many storks then in Poland's northeast. The region is very flat, rural and offers numerous lakes and swamps for the storks to find food. On top of every second pylon I saw a nest.

After reaching the top a good beer is a must!

by KiNyA

As soon as we reached a top, we found a place to have a good Czech beer. Everybody except Jozi drank Staropramen. And why Jozi drank Corgon? Few days before hiking Rysy we had a beer-voting and he gave the beer the highest rating - 2/5 (everyone else gave 1). So he had to drink what we left in the frindge.
