Southern Poland

by call_me_rhia

I have visited Poland on several occasions, mainly to visit a dear friend, but I have only seen the southern part: Lower Silesia and the area around Krakow. What impressed me were the cities: Krakow, Wroclaw, jelena Gora - so much full of character and colour, and the countryside: dramatic near Zakopane in the Tatras Mountains and gentler in the Sudeten Mountains My fondest memory is the city of Wroclaw: it's really bright and colourful, and especially alive - with young people all over and out about to have fun. Admittedly I am biased, since it's where my friend lives... but I was really impressed by the youths there. Vibrant is what I would called Wroclaw

Pierogi

by Barboreczka

If you go to any reastaurant that serves Polish food do NEVER forget to try pierogi... there are some sorts of pierogi... with different stuffing: meat and cabbage, with cabbage and mushrooms, fruits... and my favourite "pierogi ruskie" ("Russian pierogis"- but they have nothing to do with Russia). This is how they are made...If you are a vegetarian be careful! Even though you order pierogi without meat (with cabagge or ruskie) they may put greaves on the top. If you don't want it- say while ordering.

Golabki

by Barboreczka

Golabki means in Poland "small pigeons" but this meal has nothing to do with birds!!! It is the stuffing (very often contains meat mixed with a kins of cereal) put in big cabbage leaves. Then you bake everything and may put a kind of sauce... I saw also some people eating "Golabki" with boiled potatoes on the same table...

Borsch

by Barboreczka

There are 2 types of borsch in Poland: white and red. Red is ate especially during Christmas but not only... The soup "red borsch" is made of red beet but we also put inside something. On Christmas Eve we put there "uszka" (something similar to pierogi- with mushroom stuffing- after Christmas it may be with meat). On any other days you can put boiled potatoes into your soup... mniam mniam

Some history

by ania70pl

The name of Poland comes from the name of the Polanie tribe. In IX - X century there existed a few pre-state territorial organizations. Polanie, who settled near Gniezno, managed to unite most tribes dwelling in the area and established the state reigned by the Piast dynasty. The first Piast prince to be mentioned by contemporary historical sources, Mieszko I was baptized in 966, thus starting the process of Poland's Christianization and placing the Polish state in the political system of Central Europe.White Eagle has been a symbol of Poland since 1295.

Exchange offices open at 8 AM and close at 6 or 7 PM. They are often open on Saturday and Sunday. The central bank in Poland is Narodowy Bank Polski (The National Bank of Poland).Credit cards are accepted in shops, travel offices, airlines agencies, fuel stations etc.You shouldn't have any troubles with getting money from ATM's, there is about 7000 of them in Poland.

Torun and the Stare Miasto

by Paul2001

Torun is one of the best preserved medieval towns in all of Poland. In fact it is so well maintained that the town has been included on the World Heritage List. The Stare Miasto has a beautiful town square and several interesting Gothic Churches. The fortifications that used to surround the town are largely intact in some places. There are many medieval warehouse still standing throughtout the town that are now being restored and turned into small shopping arcades and exhibition halls. There are also many charming small hotels throughout the town that staying in Torun a pleasure. It rained like mad for most of my stay in Torun. Even with this being the case the charm of the Stare Miasto was not lost on me.

Cash or Card?

In all Polish shops and restaurants you can pay cash. In towns and cities you'll easily find places that accept Visa, Mastercard/Eurocard. It's harder to pay American Express cards.Travellers' Cheques can be cashed in banks. You'll find ATM cashpoints not only in major cities (almost on every corner) but also in smaller towns. ATM cashpoints are called in Polish 'bankomat'.
