Alcohol

by gale.blog.pl

Alcoholism used to be a problem here. Fortunately it seems like we've got rid of it. Sales of alcohol to persons under 18 is prohibited and may be penalized. The sales of soft alcohol like beer and wine has been growing while the sales of vodka - dropping in the recent years. Keep your fingers crossed!

Police

by gale.blog.pl

Should you see cars like those, you'll now know that those are police cars. Policemen are quite kind and underpaid. They usually don't speak English so don't bother.Whenever you see a guy in a dark uniform with a yellow jacket with a "POLICJA" sign on its back, you can feel safe. Very similar to those police jackets are jackets worn by private security agents - the sing says "OCHRONA" then. FONDEST? This system must be sick indeed. Can I have any FONDEST memories of meetings with the police?!!! ;)

Wroclaw's Rynek

by Paul2001

Wroclaw has one of the most beautiful old Rynek's in all of Poland. With it's stunningly coloured facades and array cafes and restaurants it is a great place to relax and sip on a beer. The highlight of the Rynek is the Town Hall situated on the southern part of the square. The Rynek used to be the centre of commercial activity in Wroclaw, today however it now mostly a tourist zone. Perhaps it has been a little too commercialized for some with its strategically placed McDonald's and Pizza Hut(just to the right in this photo). Regardless of the over commercialization I thought that the Wroclaw's Rynek was a fine place to visit with it's many fine restaurants and bars.

The Esperanto was born just in Bialystok...

by diamond7

The Esperanto the universal language, was created in Bialystok by the hand of Dr. Zamenhof in 19th century, but in that time the town was territory of Lithuania under the russian government.Dr. Zamenhof was born in Bialystok and by his fifteen years started the great work of his life that was creating an artificial language for being used by any person who wants to communicate with someone with a different language. Anyway, his plan was never worked. The personal reason of his ideal was because in his natal town, Bialystok, was spoken 4 languages by the different 4 communities of the city: (russo, german, hebrew and polish) and was hard in that time the people of community talk with a person of another community.Dr. Zamenhof was a great pacifist and he spoken 12 languages!!! For all these facts I think he is an important symbol just for us, the travellers... and why not for all the VT...

Tatras Mountains

by Paul2001

Walking in the Tatras Mountains is a fantastic experience that ranks amongst the great delights that Poland has to offer. This mountain region is not exactly a wilderness but it is about as close you will get to it in this part of Europe. There are all kinds of hiking trails in this park that range in difficultity from easy walks to extremely arduous. With regards to the later you should have the proper equipment and perhaps a guide. Some of the Tatras Mountains in themselves are a very difficult climb even if these mountains are not as high as lets say, the Alps. They should not be taken lightly as they can be very steep in places. Were I was climbing, the mountain was covered with snow and ice and the climb and the track down was quite tricky and exhausting.I have included more pictures of my hikes through the Tatras Mountains in a travelogue section. The stunning landscape of the...

The Rynek Glowny of Krakow

by Paul2001

The Rynek Glowny in the Stare Miasta is a great place to sit, watch people and have a beer or even a meal. It is the largest town square in Poland and supposedly was at one time the largest in all of Europe.Unlike the other Ryneks in Poland this old square survived the Second World War without being damaged by any fighting. For me the architecture around the square, including the Cloth Hall and the St. Mary's Church, was mesmerizing. Each time I entered the Rynek, I found it difficult to tear myself way. This was the case inspite of the terrible weather Krakow experienced during my visit.
