    Crowds in Long Weekends

    by gale.blog.pl Updated May 1, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

During so called 'long weekends' Kazimierz tends to be overcrowded with one-day tourists. The most famous Polish long weekend is based on two holidays: May 1st (Labour Day) and May 3rd (Constitution Day). The two days bridged with May 2nd and some Saturday-Sunday constitute a great time for a short vacation for those tired of winter and early spring in the city.

Huge crowds leave towns and rush - among others - to Kazimierz. On those days Kazimierz becomes less romantic than a supermarket. All parking lots are occupied and cars wait in several kilometer long lines to get through to the town.

Shops, kiosks and stands open wherever possible (and wherever impossible) as everyone wants to make some money on the season opening. Due to that everyone makes very little money, the tiny streets lose their special character and you start wondering why Kazimierz is so popular.

Unique Suggestions: Have a short walk of Kazimierz most popular spots, remember or write down things that you would like to see in a more quiet time and come back on the next weekend.

Fun Alternatives: Kazimierz is a romantic place and it is worth visiting and spending even a few days. But not on a long weekend.

Think twice before you plan the date!

by gosiaPL Written Nov 5, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If your main interest in Kazimierz Dolny is that it is an artists colony, you may be disappointed if you go there:
    1) In autumn or winter - you'll find there are no artists displaying their works of art in the square
    2) On a weekday - most artists await your money on weekends! KD is a popular weekend destination so many artists can't be bothered to display their works on weekdays, when there's few people around.
If you come only for art and don't plan the date wisely, you may find KD to be just a boring place like in this picture!

Unique Suggestions: If you come to KD mainly for art, check the numerous galleries that are scattered all over the town.
But be warned that some of the galleries open only on weekends! (when tourist money is around)
You may also see the paintings exhibition in the local museum - see my "Must See Activity" tip on the Celejowska House.

Fun Alternatives: Well, if you're in the trap already, then I guess you better change your travel purpose from art to history & architecture... These are always there, regardles of season or the day of the week.
Check my 'Must See Activity' tips for some alternatives. You will realise that architecture and monuments of history were my main purpose to go to KD so, frankly, I never got into the "artists' colony trap", he he! :-))

Of course, you probably imagine that KD looks so much more beautiful in spring and summer...
