Ms. Kawulok plays the trombite

The greatest attraction of the Kawulok's cottage are the old instruments. Some years ago it was the landlady herself who played the trombite, horns or pipe. Today Mrs. Zuzanna Kawulok is too weak and ill to do that, but her neighbours are willing to give a short presentation.
Several years ago we had a pleasure to listen to Mrs. Kawulok talk about the cottage and play some instruments. I was really impressed by the sight and sound of trombite. This long ( 3 metres) wooden pipe is made of spruce wood. The stump is cut into two halves and hollowed. Then the two parts are glued together and wrapped with some cherry bark.
In the past the sound of trombite was used to warn the shepherds of approaching danger.

Kawulok's cottage

Another interesting village of the region, in fact forming with Koniakow and Jaworzynka so called Trivillage is Istebna. It's mostly known for the Kawulok's cottage. It was built in 1863 by grandfather of the present owner - Zuzanna Kawulok. Inside the stove used for heating in the times when a chimney was a luxury only the rich could afford. As a result the rooms were black with smoke so the residents opened the doors and windows to let it out.

Laces

The tradition of making laces in Koniakow is about 200 years old. Each young girl who was thinking of getting married had to embroider her own bonnet. It was a real shame if she wasn't able to do it by herself!
Today laces are still made in many homes in Koniakow. Most of them can be bought, but there are some for display only. The example is an unfinished tablecloth made for Queen Elizabeth II. It was to be as thin and delicate as cobweb, and that's why it was made of surgical thread. Unluckily, the woman who was embroidering it fell ill and died, not finishing her work.
Today some lace-makers who want to keep up-to-date embroider not only tableclothes or collars but even underwear. So if you want to have some unique lace panties, come to Koniakow.
