Noc Swietojanska or St John's Night

by evaanna

St John's Night celebrations date back to pre-Christian times, when they bore the name of Kupala. The night of 21 June, the shortest night of the year has always been considered a special one, a night of fire, which represents the masculine element and of water, standing for the female. It's a magical night when love can bind people forever.Nowadays it is more often celebrated on 23 June, on the eve of St John's day or on the Saturday which is closest to that date.On that night bonfires are lit on river banks and people gather around them to celebrate the coming of the summer. Young girls weave wreathes from wild flowers and love herbs, with ribbons and a candle in the middle. The wreathes are then let off with the river current. If they are carried away, the girl will get married in the coming year but if a wreath gets entangled in the weeds or stopped in some other way its author will...

Lany Poniedzialek

by sphynxxs

Beware when travelling in Poland on Easter Monday: It´s "lany poniedzialek" and one of the less charming Easter traditions in Poland means that groups of youth splash neighbors, strangers and whoever comes along their way with water. Train and bus stations seem to be their favorite place to wait for "victims". And some of them tend to exaggerate and use big buckets! Very inconvenient when you still have some hours of train travel ahead.....

Religion

by deeper_blue

Poland is devoutely Catholic and church attendance is very high. Poland has a tradition of working and finishing early, meaning shopping times can be inconvenient. John Paul II was Polish and a hero for his countrymen who helped bring the end of communism.

An old Polish story goes...

by deeper_blue

Centuries ago, 3 Slavic brothers, 1 Czech, 1 Russian and a Pole set out to find new homes. The Czech stopped at the first good clearing and decided it was good enough. The other 2 continued to a beautiful plain full of wildlife, winding rivers and fertile land, where the Pole decided to stay while the Russian continued east. Unfortunately the flat plains have been perfect for military invasion over the centuries, notably in World War II.

Fatty Thursday

by evaanna

Polish people don't have Pancake Day but they celebrate Shrove Thursday, the last Thursday before Lent. The more doughnuts you eat on that day the better and people actually compete who can eat more. Our doughnuts are wonderful: made with yeast, with a drop of marmalade or eggnog inside and orange rind on the surface. I think rose hip marmalade is best in doughnuts but now extremely rare. We can get them all the year round but it is on Fatty Thursday as the day is popularly called that they come into their own. In distant past they were not sweet at all and were served with meat but not any longer.Another kind of cake that Polish people eat on that day is 'faworek' (pronounced 'fa:voreck, usu. plural faworki). Faworki are thin layers of pretty hard dough cut into rectangles with a cut in the middle and specially twisted before frying. They are sprinkled with caster sugar and must be...

Pierogies!

by Arial_27

Pierogies are just as popular in Poland as you would have thought they were! They can be found in so many different places of the city all over the country. The most popular kind, which Poland is the most known for is called "Pierogi ruskie" which literally means "Russian perogi" and they are they kind stuffed with cheese. You can find a wide variety of different pierogies here, ones with mushrooms, bacons, spinach, and other spices, meat and vegetables. They're pretty cheap - maybe only $3 USD for about 8 of them, which is more than enough for a whole meal.

Polish political leaders

by Arial_27

What I found interesting in Poland was that the country is run by two men who are twin brothes, Lech and Jarosław Kaczyński, who once starred in a 1962 Polish film called "The Two who Stole the Moon." Lech is the President, and his brother Jarosław is the Prime Minister. What is humourous about it, is that "kaczyński," the surname of these brothers means "duck" in English. If you see any pins, T-shirt or caps in Poland with this kind of design it is, now you will know what the joke is about!

My Dad 8/2/26 to 27/12/04

by Elodie_Caroline

My father, Edward, was born and bred in Poland. He joined the Polish army in 1940, aged just 14 years old, to go and fight the Germans in the second world war. In 1948, he came to live in England, made himself nationalized and always classed England as his home. He loved England for some strange reason? I never heard him say one bad word against the UK. Now he has gone to rest, and think that it's only fitting that I send him back to where his and my Polish ancestors came from. When I was young, I never seemed to get on with my Dad, and yet we were so much alike. I take after my Dad in so many ways: I am good at art, love music, am a brilliant cook and I am passionate and very emotional, just like him. I got to understand him as I got older, but one thing, I did always respect him all through my life. I'm glad that we told each other that we loved each other the year he died, we had never...

A little Polish history

by Elodie_Caroline

Poland has a long and varied history and was once the largest country in Europe. The actual name of Poland comes from the name of the Polanie tribe. In the 9th/10th century, there was a few pre-state territories. Someone called Polanie, settled near Gniezno, had managed to unite most of the other tribes iiving in the area and established the state reigned by the Piast dynasty. The first Piast prince to be mentioned by contemporary historical sources was Mieszko I, who was baptized in 966, thus starting the process of Poland's Christianization and placing the Polish state in the political system of Central Europe.I would have to say that the second World war must have been Poland's darkest hour? Not only had Germany invaded them in 1939 and were killing all of the Polish Intelligensia, but they also installed the Concentration death camps of Auchwitz and Sobibor to name but two. Contrary...
