Yet another new friend Zywiec

by AcornMan

As you may have guessed, Zywiec is also a Polish beer, and it appeared to be the most common one served throughout Warsaw and Krakow. Although I didn't like it quite as much as Kasztelan, it was still quite good. I must have had a few gallons of this stuff during my two-week stay.

Polish road custom

by Polish_Mila

I think it is a very good, human custom of Polish drivers. In Poland, drivers keep to the right side of the road and yield to the emergency vehicles ,which are using signals such as ambulances or fire brigade. That allows them to be faster at the place of an accident or fire.I wonder if such a custom is present among drivers in other countries?

All Saints' Day

by gale.blog.pl

We don't celebrate Heloween. We do however have All Saints' Day tradition. On November 1st Poles go to cemeteries to light candles and say a little prayer for their beloved ones who are not with us any more.I recommend that you have a walk of the nearest cemetery at about 5 PM. It's incredible how lovely all those candles look. The atmosphere is amazing.

The first day of the Spring

by Skeptic-jr

Youngsters often call the first day of the Spring the "Truant's Day", because many pupils do not go to school that day. But the teachers trying to avoid the huge absence from school usually do not provide normal lessons, but strolls, visits in cinema or other activities. One of them is a "Marzanna's drowning", connected to the old pagan custom. The Marzanna (a word in the old form of Polish language has a meaning of nightmare or another bad things linked to the death) is a puppet which symbolize the Winter. To pass it out the Marzanna should be burn or drown down. Today many pupils and teachers goes on March 21th at the river's or lake's shores to throw the puppet into water. There are a series of prohibitions during a ceremony. E.g. no one should touch the puppet flowing in water, because his hand can then shrivel. The typical puppet is made of straw, white cotton and colourful ribbons....

Polish Farming Family

by Pawtuxet

Driving down one of the country roads, I made my husband stop the car when I saw the farmers in the field. My daughter took the camera and ran back to photograph them. The mother and kids had come with lunch and the whole family laughed as Susan took her photos. Everyone was so accomodating. Such warm and friendly people.

Small bills go a long way.

by bpwillet

When we got to Oswiecim we needed some Polish Zlotych and we went to an ATM just outside the train station. Luckily they accepted out cards but they give out such high bills that they are hard to use. All we wanted was a little bit of breakfast and it was hard to convince them in our "pointy talkie" English that we didn't have any other money. But that is all the fun of it.

Play the gravity game

by call_me_rhia

If you are in or near Karpacz do like many Polish people do: go play the gravity game. What you need is either a car or an empty glass bottle. Then head outside town, to a place called Karpacz Górny: for some strange reason there's a gravity anomaly here. Place your car (or your bottle) downhill-wards and swtich off the engine: your car will now drive downhill but uphill. There's always plenty of people there enjoying this gravity game, so join them: the sensation is amazing.

Highlanders - Gorale

by ania70pl

A highlander is a real man - proud, tough, honourable and independent. Highlanders have developed their own system of values, a state of mental balance and acceptance for the natural order of things. They enjoy good fun and when they get to play they play with wild abandon, real zest and vigour. This is joyful, vibrant folklore of the Podhale region. If by any chance you are invited to a highlander's wedding be prepared for a wild party which lasts till the morning hours. And be careful when somebody offers you the local tea (goralska herbatka). It can knock down even a tough highlander as it's with alcohol.
