There are vaulted halls in which columns fan out like palms that according to some theories reminded the Teutonic Knights their origins in Palestine
I'm no an art expert but the slenderness of the columns and their proportions are well worth the visit

Where is the toilet?

Can you imagine the problem of the hygienic services (??) in a castle where lived more than three thousand people, knights , militars , service, visitors, prisoners ... ?
To fix it they had what they called the "Gdannisko" , this name is not known if it was used to humiliate the people from Gdansk, the Danes or because the builder came from Danzig, but it is a tower that serves as a latrine, which is outside the castle wall, joined by a "corridor", as far as possible of the castle church, to separate the divine from the human, near bedrooms and here they coul throw the impurities allowing to a pit or directly into the river
How could reach the bathroom the number of people visiting the castle, many of them illiterate or who spoke other languages?
Personally I think the smell would give a very good track, but the official way to get there was not the direction of the arrow, but the tail direction , of the little devil that were placed strategically on the walls
Looking the photo it seems clear that the litle devil has "an urgent call of nature" what automatically justify its function

Brick, ceramic, granite ....
The brick, easy to fabricate in this area where is not easy to find stone, is the material most used in the construction of this castle, which certainly to see the colours taken with the evening sun is wonderful.
In the construction of the palace was also used inside the ceramic and granite to the defensive walls and foundation because it is more resistant than brick, inside we can see also how they worked wood and glass
With the conservation work and large restorations that have been made in the castle is not surprising that it has developed here a great school of restoration where they have rediscovered medieval building and construction techniques, which have been re-introduced in the castle
If we speak of restoration we can not forget the conservation of works of art in paintings, furniture, sculptures of stone and wood, military objects, ceramics, metals ...

El pelícano / The pelican

Upon entering the courtyard of the Upper Castle, it seems to enter a cloister that in the middle has a well to supply water to the castle , which is covered by a roof and in the top has the heraldic figure of a pelican vulning himself .
There are several theories about the meaning of this sculpture , that in time of famine , the pelican wounded herself in the chest with the beak to draw blood and feeding with it to their chicks, and preserve them of starvation which is an allegory of the Virgin Mary or of Christ the Savour who gave his life for the men
Another legend says that the mother fed her dying young with her blood to revive them from death, but in turn lost her own life.

The Teutonic Knights called this castle of Malbork (in Polish Zamek , Malborku) Castle of Mary, Marienburg and from the year 1276 to 1406 it was built and modified to suit all their needs and it became the largest brick Gothic fortress built in European
Inside lived more than three thousand soldiers and around it grew a city
During these years it was the centre of the European Cavalry and it was the residence of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights Order and from here they had control of the river, charged tolls and they reached the market monopoly of amber and wheat
In 1457, after the Treaty of Torum, the Castle became the property of the Polish crown and remained so for over three centuries as an administrative centre, temporal royal residence , arsenal ...
During World War II it was used as a training centre, a concentration camp ... and after a bombing it was badly damaged. Fortunately most of its treasures had been taken earlier.
Poland decided to restore it using the old drawings and appropriate construction methods and they have achieved the fact that we can admire a masterpiece of the Gothic Architecture that has made that the fortress lives again its original glory

The Teutonic Knights
To visit and enjoy the tour of Malbork is good to have an idea of who were the Teutonic Knights
In the twelfth century , to the two existing religious orders, which were created to protect pilgrims to the Holy Land (Jerusalem), the Templars and the Hospitallers, it was added a third called the Hospital of the Virgin Mary of the German House in Jerusalem, known as the Order of the Teutonic Knights, which was formed only by German nobles
In 1215 Pope Honorius III declared the area as a territory of Prussian Crusade to fight the pagan Prussians and Lithuanians, with the same privileges granted to the Crusade to the Holy Land and in 1230 the Prince Conrad I of Masovia requested aid from the Order to help him to defend his borders
The loss of the fortress of Acre during the Third Crusade at the end of the thirteenth century, meant the fall of Jerusalem, forcing the Orders of Chivalry to return to Europe and that is when the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights decides to leave Venice and in Malbork he established his residency in 1308, which makes the vast territory of Prussia independent of ecclesiastical and political power in Poland
Maintained a strong state that was in constant struggles with their neighbours, until in 1386 when the Grand Duke of Lithuania converted to Catholicism and with his marriage united the states of Poland and Lithuania.
Poland had the opportunity to return to regain their land and to have access to the North Sea, so they began a long war, the Thirteen Years War, which virtually was decided at the Battle of Grunwald where the Teutonic Knights were defeated, which had to sell the Castle of Malbork and started its decline
In 1525 the Grand Master Hohenzollern-Ansbach converted to Lutheranism and signed a treaty by which Prussia became a hereditary duchy

TOALETA PLATNA = PAID TOILET/RESTROOM

Hmm... you must pay for a public toilet/restroom outside the castle.
Be prepared to pay (to a live woman in a window, no automatic machines :-) 1 Polish Zloty (zl = PLN). 1 Euro = approx. 4.3 PLN. 1 US$ = approx. 3.7 PLN. In June 2003.

I do NOT like this !!! What about you?

From my friend Nat (b1bob):
I will be dipped in honey and fed to the bears before I'll ever pay to go to the loo, I guarantee you that!

Nat, there is a lot of honey around but fortunately there are no bears (they are 350 miles away in the Tatra Mountains).

THE MIDDLE CASTLE'S COURTYARD

It seems that the favourite place to take especially a group picture is located in the huge courtyard of the Middle Castle - look at my picture. Watch the sun and hmm... don't try to take such a picture in midday hehe.

Btw the courtyard of the High Castle is too small to take such pictures.

MONUMENT CONSERVATION

There are a lot of renovations/conservations around the castle. So, you can see monument conservators at work, if you are lucky hehe.
I met this guy on my picture in the Middle Castle's Courtyard just next to the entrance to the restaurant Piwniczka.
