IN THE CHAPTER HOUSE

In the second half of the fourteenth century, the interior of the High Castle's Chapter House was magnificently decorated with paintings that comprised a monumental gallery of the Grand Masters, whose images were embellished with inscriptions. Only small remnants of this splendour survive to this day.

THE CHAPTER HOUSE

Beside the main Chapel, the High Castle's Chapter House is the most important interior in the Malbork Castle. Its importance is tied to the medieval era, when this was the place of sittings for Teutonic chapters, not only those of the convent, but those of the greatest meaning for the entire Germanic Order, in other words, general sittings and sittings where the Grand Masters were selected.
This was where the most important decisions were made regarding the functioning of the Teutonic Order as a religious corporation. This was also where the strategic moves of the Prussian monastic nation were made. Between 1324 - 1454 Grand Masters were chosen in this splendid interior.

THE VAULTS

A vault is a type of arch which supports a roof or ceiling, esp. in a church or public building or a ceiling or roof supported bt several of these arches.
Walking around rooms of the High Castle you can see numerous vaults. Some of them are additionally decorated with pictures and frescos.

STAINED GLASS

Stained glass is glass which has been coloured and cut into various shapes to form pictures or patterns. Stained glass is most commonly used in the decoration of church windows.

You can find many beautiful stained glasses walking around the interiors of the High Castles. Usually there are pictures of saints or church notables.

THE TOWER SEEN FROM THE COURTYARD

There is the highest tower of the whole castle just seen by its courtyard. It's seen from the outside of the castle as well. Hmm... unfortunately its top is closed to the public, at least when i was in Marlbork.

THE WELL

There is the old covered well on the High Castle Coutyard - the most characterictic point of this area, I suppose. It's made of wood, covered and as you can see on my picture it's used as a bench as well :-).

ENTRANCE TO THE PASSAGE TO THE COURTYARD

Go through this passage on my picture to enter the Courtyard of the High Castle. Hmm, it's quite long and a little dark = not so easy to take a good picture. Pay attention for unusual in colours arch. Don't you like it?

DRAWBRIDGE AND THE FIRST WALL

Drawbridge is a bridge that can be raised or lowered in order to protect a castle from attack or nowadays to allow big boats to go under it.

Walking through the drawbridge (notice the chains) you must pass through the first wall of the High Castle.

THE MOAT

A moat is a long wide channel whis is dug all the way around a safe place, such as a castle or hill, and is usually filled with water, making the place more difficult to attack.

The moat between the Middle and the High Castle is not filled with water nowadays but as you can see on my picture (taken from the drawbridge) it's quite deep. On the left: the Middle Castle, on the right: the High Castle.

Middle Castle - southeast corner

MIDDLE CASTLE - SOUTHEAST CORNER

You can see the huge roof there. Notice the beautiful window (hmm... how is it called in English - mansard?) - combined brick and wooden construction.
The medieval road surface is rather not for cars, even not for pedastrians, especially ladies with high heel shoes :-).
