We went from Torum to Gdansk by train, but we made a stop in Malbork (195 Zl)
The trip was very comfortable and is not long, about two hours the first stretch and just over an hour on the second.
The trains are very comfortable, one was Intercity and are not particularly expensive
As we had suitcases we took a taxi to the castle and in a hotel right at the entrance , they let us leave our bags during the visit

The Castle from the Train

As we found, having learned no Polish when we arrived at the station, and with no train map anywhere in sight, finding the right train is not as easy as travel fora and adverts for the castle made out.

Though we saw a notice about a train to Malbork, the train which went there was actually headed for Elblag. The journey was about an hour there and about 45 minutes coming back on the Intercity train. From the station, turn right and follow the tower of the castle as it comes into view.

A warning- unlike the bus system, on which we managed through confusion to get to the airport without paying, we encountered conductors on both journeys.

LOT - POLISH AIRLINES

The closest passenger airport is located in Gdansk GDN ( 60 km = 37 mi; 50 minutes)
The Warsaw Airport WAW (310 km = 193 mi; 3 hours)
LOT Polish Airlines, Infoline - tel. (+48) 952, 953

From Gdansk airport take a taxi (they are relatively cheap in Poland, especially when you travel in a group of 2-4 persons to share costs) or take a taxi to the Main Railway Station (Gdansk Glowny) and take a train or use buses (PKS).

From Warsaw airport take a taxi to the Central Railway Station (Dworzec Centralny) and take a train or use buses (PKS).

Bus and train to Malbork

I used both bus and train heading Malbork and going back. I should say using train was more comfortable, cheaper, not so long distance to travel than with bus. One more thing I didn’t liked bus is road reconstruction works, making big gridlocks.
Ticket cost about 10 Zloty one way (June 2008).

Malbork is an hour from Gdansk in the north of Poland and 3 hours from Torun. The trains are the best way to get around. The train station is about 15 minutes from the castle. You could easily visit Malbork as a daytrip from Gdansk.

POLISH TRAIN

There is a train station in Malbork.

The only railway company in Poland is called PKP (pronaunced pe-ka-pe). It's an abbrevation of Polskie Koleje Panstwowe = Polish National Railways. The company is still public and supported by... the state (=state taxes).
.
Raiway stations are often called stations PKP ("dworzec PKP" pronaunced dvojetz pe-ka-pe) in Poland.

Train timetables are available:
- in all railway stations,
- in some accommodations (hotels, campings, etc.),
- in tourist offices, tourist information points etc.
- by local phone, usually railway (=PKP) information phone about domestic trains is 94-36,
- in your cell phone: if you have not very old phone it's surely can use WAP, so you can see PKP timetable on the page: wap.pkp.pl
- on the internet:
1. www.rozklad.pkp.pl and click on "W jezyku polskim"
2. On the bottom of new page choose your language:
- English,
- French,
- German,
- Polish.
.
Other pages with european timetables:
.
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en - page of German Railways (Deutche Bundesbahn) in English,
.
www.rail.ch/index_e.htm - page of Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) in English

How much are train tickets? Dirt cheap!

THE BRIDGE OVER THE NOGAT RIVER

Malbork is located in north-central Poland, 60 km (37 mi) southeast of city of Gdansk (German Danzig) located on the Baltic Sea.

I got to Malbork by a car. Driving from the south (road No 1 to Gdansk) turn right a few kilometers/miles before city of Tczew to a road No 50, drive eastward 17 km (11 miles) to enter Malbork.

To the castle: drive straight by the bridge over the Nogat (look at my picture), then turn left as I remember well on the second lights and again left following the direction signs to the castle.

I found a parking lot just in front of the entrance to the Castle Museum.

Driving distances from:
my hometown Tychy: 540 km (335 mi)
Gdansk: 60 km (37 mi)
Warsaw: 310 km (193 mi)
Krakow: 570 km (354 mi)
Wroclaw: 450 km (280 mi)
