Malbork Transportation

As we found, having learned no Polish when we arrived at the station, and with no train map anywhere in sight, finding the right train is not as easy as travel fora and adverts for the castle made out.

Though we saw a notice about a train to Malbork, the train which went there was actually headed for Elblag. The journey was about an hour there and about 45 minutes coming back on the Intercity train. From the station, turn right and follow the tower of the castle as it comes into view.

A warning- unlike the bus system, on which we managed through confusion to get to the airport without paying, we encountered conductors on both journeys.

The closest passenger airport is located in Gdansk GDN ( 60 km = 37 mi; 50 minutes)

From Gdansk airport take a taxi (they are relatively cheap in Poland, especially when you travel in a group of 2-4 persons to share costs) or take a taxi to the Main Railway Station (Gdansk Glowny) and take a train or use buses (PKS).

From Warsaw airport take a taxi to the Central Railway Station (Dworzec Centralny) and take a train or use buses (PKS).

I used both bus and train heading Malbork and going back. I should say using train was more comfortable, cheaper, not so long distance to travel than with bus. One more thing I didn’t liked bus is road reconstruction works, making big gridlocks.
Ticket cost about 10 Zloty one way (June 2008).

Malbork is an hour from Gdansk in the north of Poland and 3 hours from Torun. The trains are the best way to get around. The train station is about 15 minutes from the castle. You could easily visit Malbork as a daytrip from Gdansk.

There is a train station in Malbork.

The only railway company in Poland is called PKP (pronaunced pe-ka-pe). It's an abbrevation of Polskie Koleje Panstwowe = Polish National Railways. The company is still public and supported by... the state (=state taxes).

Raiway stations are often called stations PKP ("dworzec PKP" pronaunced dvojetz pe-ka-pe) in Poland.

Train timetables are available:
- in all railway stations,
- in some accommodations (hotels, campings, etc.),
- in tourist offices, tourist information points etc.
- by local phone, usually railway (=PKP) information phone about domestic trains is 94-36,
- in your cell phone: if you have not very old phone it's surely can use WAP, so you can see PKP timetable on the page: wap.pkp.pl
