 | Mazowsze Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 3 of 3 | | Konstancin is a resort just south of Warsaw with many interesting old and new villas and a few sanatoriums, all in a pine forest. You are sure to hear more about it when I have taken some pictures. Here I just want to show you a place east of it on the Vistula where you can go for walks or ride your bike, enjoying the view of the river and the islands close to its banks. In the summer, you can see families bringing their picnics there or just walking on the high earth embankment, which has prevented many a flood in the area. Near the village of Gassy there is a concrete pier you can walk on as well, which in the spring sometimes gets completely flooded. The river currents are very strong here so bathing is too dangerous. And so is skating in the winter, there is too much risk of the ice breaking. But on the pier and hidden in the shrubbery on the banks you can always come across anglers, patiently waiting for their 'catch'. Not that I have ever seen any of them catching anything but a tiny roach. Leave a Comment

One of the nicest forests near Warsaw is the Sekocin Forest. It's a nice place to visit after for example a visit to the IKEA at Janki. Just drive on as you come from Warsaw in the direction of Nadarzyn and turn left towards Magdalenka and Piaseczno, there are two car parks by road 725, the first one is bigger and I think nicer. It's in a kind of clearing in the wood with an old forester's house in the middle. There are benches on the edge of the forest, a restaurant just opposite, where you can have fish and chips for your lunch, and fish ponds of the former state farm on the other side of the road. Take a walk in the wood or along the road that goes past the restaurant. But don't try walking on the road leading to Piaseczno - the drivers there go too fast and pay no attention to pedestrians. Anyway, why should you when there is all this forest around? Leave a Comment

The Chojnow Forest (Lasy Chojnowskie) near Piaseczno is a great place for walks, picnics, riding a bike and it's easily accessible by car. The forest is criss-crossed with a network of paths and there are some marked educational nature trails too. On one of the boards marking the trail we found information on the time of day the various birds start singing in mid-May - a real bird alarm-clock. The forest is flanked by a small river on one side and a walk along it is probably the most interesting. You can also cross one of the footbridges on the river and walk along its other bank with a view of a pond on the other side. In winter, when we were there last, the dam was open so the pond wasn't there but in the summer you can see kayaks and water-bikes on the water. Near the biggest car park there is a shelter where scouts organise their bonfires and meetings. Nearby there are some smaller shelters and benches where anyone can come and have a bonfire or just a picnic. There is also a children's playground with slides, swings and the like, although I think they dismantle some of the equipment for the winter. On the other side of the main (dirt) track there is a memorial stone to the insurgents of the Warsaw Uprising who lost their lives in battle there. To get to the forest, drive along Pulawska Street to Piaseczno (road 723), then take the road towards Gora Kalwaria. Look out for a sign for Zalesie, turn right and after a short time turn right again into a dirt track in the forest. Drive on till you get to a car park on your left and the memorial stone on your right. Mind, the track can be so muddy after rain that a small car might get stuck. Leave a Comment
