There are some boards on the Town Hall's walls. The most interesting among them seems to be a board of the Pope John Paul II (Jan Pawel II). John Paul II became a honorary inhabitant of the town of Nowy Targ on June, 21 1996. The Council of the Town of Nowy Targ gave this gift to the Pope in an 650-year anniversary of the Town.
John Paul II had a mass in Nowy Targ during his first visit to Poland as a Pope on June, 8, 1979.

Nowy Targ has a quite big market square. It has about 1,5 ha. It was a place where people used to buy and sell things - a real market! Now, in the middle of the square there is a Town Hall with trees and benches around it. In front of the Hall there is guarded parking place.
Till the end of XVIII century Nowy Targ's market square had wooden buildings around it. In 1784 a huge fire destroyed the buildings. The Town Hall has its clock tower. The Hall was built in the middle of XIX century at the same place where, orginally, used to stand a wooden Town Hall. It is said that the wooden Hall was in the centre of the square before 1767.

First information about the Church in chronicles is in 1326. The Church we can see today was founded by Kazimierz Wielki (Kazimierz the Great) - King of Poland in 1340. Only small pieces of the original Church menaged to survive till now. In 1601 there was a huge fire which destroyed almost all the town. The only survived buildings were a Church of St. Anna and some houses.
In 1606 the Church was rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1649. there were some more fires in the next years (1657, 1710, 1719, 1764). In 1765 the Church was rebuilt. In 1897 all alters were reconstructed.

There are private buses of Szwagropol from Krakow to Zakopane. They also stop in Nowy Targ. I think that it would be better option than public buses as private one are quite new and more comfortable. Probably cheaper, too. The price of normal ticket from Krakow to Nowy Targ is 11 zloty.

Nowy Targ as a capital of Podhale Region it has a Railway station. It is not big but all trains going from Krakow to Zakopane stops here. The trip takes about three hours but, compering to buses, you may enjoy your trip admiring beautiful views from the train... In addition, a trip by train is much comfortable. It is better to take a fast train - Express/IC (green colour) or pospieszny (red colour). Do not take osobowy trainas it is slow and stops at every stop.:)

Nowy Targ is easly reached by bus. There are more than 10 public buses of PPKS from Krakow to Nowy Targ. The trip sjould be not more than two hours. There is a big bus station in Nowy Targ (in the picture) where you can find some shops and kiosks with newspapers and magazines. The bus station is close to the city centre - about five minutes from the main market square. It is a good idea to travel by bus if you want to arrive to Nowy Targ in the centre.
