 | Poland Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 10 of 189 | | Probably the most notable aspect of this museum is not its exhibitions but the stunning facade to the building itself. The facade is both wildly painted in bright colours and beautifully adorned in stucco sculpture. It actually consists of several building along a row on the north side of the Rynek. As for the interior of the museum, the best I can say is that it the exhibits are well displayed but hardly remarkable or memorable. Naturally enought they focus on the history and culture of the local region. The museum is open from 10am to 4pm and it cost 4zl to visit. It is closed on Mondays. Leave a Comment

While wondering around Zakopane, I happened upon this quaint cemetery. What I especially liked about it was the carved wooden tombstones. All were done in a unique still. Another aspect that I liked about it was that it was engulfed by green forest. It created a very pleasant atmosphere. Overall I thought that it gave some insight into the local culture of the Tatras Mountains. Leave a Comment

The castle of Torun is in complete ruins however this should not stop you from visiting them. They give you a good impression of the scale of the original Teutonic castle that dominated the town. The castle is located close to the riverfront between the "old" and "new" towns of Torun. Leave a Comment

Close to the border with Czech Rep, in the south west crner of Poland lies a range of mountains called the Sudety. We drove on a road which cut straight through and then wound high up into the mountains themselves for an incredible view. Leave a Comment

To honour those who fought and died in the Warsaw uprising in 1944, the local governement, then communist, built this mezmerizing monument. The insurgents are depicted here emerging from the manholes to confront the Nazis. The monument is located outside of the National Courts at plac Krasinskich. Leave a Comment

Ok, I don't care how many times you've been to Poland or how close you live near its borders. But I can bet less than 10 people on this site will have this Polish territory as their first "landing" on Polish soil & also as the "off the beaten path"! ARCTOWSKI - The Polish Antarctic Station is the 1st place I visited in January this year that's "officially" Polish. That made it my "first entry" into Poland in record ;-) Known as Henryk Arctowski, it was completed in 1977 & located at (62°14'16"S, 58°28'15"W) Admiralty Bay, King George Island. To read more about this station, please proceed to its official website - click here. Leave a Comment

Pulawy is 120 km south from Warsaw and 50 km west from Lublin. There is train connection from Warsaw Central Station (a train every 2 hours) or by bus ?Polski Express? so it's pretty easy to get there and it's really worth to visit. In the Palace-Park Complex you can visit former Czartoryski Palace, the first museum building in Poland, opened in 1801 known as Sybil Temple, the second museum building in Poland, opened in 1809 known as Gothic House, Marynki Palace, Chinese House and beautiful English landscape park of over 60 acres area. As you are driving from Berlin to Gdansk (E-22)and you have just eaten your lunch at Canpol(see my restaurant tip), have a nice stroll in the ruins of the Teutonic castle which used to be the second biggest Teutonic castle in this part of Europe(after this in Malbork). It used to be because now there are only remains i.e. a tower, a chapel (which was trasformed into a concert hall and some castle walls. In summer you can climb to the top of the tower, but even if it is off season you can go for a stroll in the park which is surrounded by a lake. Have a nice time! Leave a Comment

I stopped in Swidnica on my way to visit the castle Ksiaz. I was surprised as the town turned out to be quite charming and well worth visiting if you are in this part of Silesia. The town of Swidnica has bustley rynek with the usual brightly painted facades that you find elsewhere in Poland. The rynek and most of the town managed to escaped damage during the Second World War. This is something of a miracle since there was much fighting in the region. Probably the highlight for a visit to Swidnica is the Chuch of Peace, one of the finest wooden churches in Europe. There are several other interesting churches in the town but they have eradicte opening times. I found that the town tourist office, located in the rynek, was especially helpful. The one flaw I found with the town was that it had a rather bleak train station. Thankfully I took the bus to Swidnica instead. Leave a Comment
