A view on place called "brama krakowska" by earendil, 4 more photos Situated at the 30 km, north of Krakow, is the National Park of Ojcowski. It's a jurassic valley surrounded by a nice beech forest with big rock made of clear limestone with a small river in the back. A lot of easy walks are signed and you can also visit old castles and caves. Many "noclegi" helps you if you need to sleep there. In Ojcow, the small village, there is a nice bar, in the basement of the post office, called "the bat" (but in polish, i can't remember) where you can find nice food, a wood fire and you also can play chess during a cold autumn evening. Only one problem !! they don't have vodka. In autumn, the valley is very nice with the colours of the trees and you could see animals during a early walk in the nature. Leave a Comment

There are several interesting and valuable cultural monuments in the region, of which a few at least should not be missed. One of these is the Renaissance palace in Sucha called "the little Wawel". It stands at the foot of Mt. Jasien, surrounded by a park in which you can find the "gardner's house" with its regional museum, open seasonally. At the beginning of the XVIIth century a church- monestary complex was built on the heights above the Sucha market square. It was here that the Lateran brothers had their base. It is certainly worthwhile seeing the wooden inn `Rzym` (Rome) built in the middle of the XVIIIth century. This inn on the market square in Sucha has welcomed not only merchants and travelers, but the infamous local highwaymen as well.

St. John's Cathedral. by Paul2001 St. John's Cathedral is the first religious building that I visited in Poland. It is a rather sad place for it seems to have lost much of its grandeur that it probably had before the destruction of Warsaw's old town during World War II. It has since been restored but largely neglected just the same by the Communist government. Hence the interior is rather barren and far from decorative. The cathedral was originally built in the 14th century in the distinctive Mazovian Gothic style. This was actually the most impressive feature of the building. Another sad fact about the St. John's Cathedral is that it is rather hard to take a picture of because of its setting in a side street. This photograph was taken from several blocks away and only the top half is visible. Still the church is the most important religious building in Warsaw and one should visit it if you want to get some education on the city's past and culture. Leave a Comment

Treblinka Memorial by cheekymarieh Treblinka is a memorial to the attrocities of the World War 2. It was hte second largest camp after Auschwitz. Over 800,000 people were executed at this site in the space of 16 months. The central monument says the words ' Never Again'. Scattered around this central statue are 17,000 smaller rocks that represent the number of executions per day. Treblinka is about 2 hours drive from Warsaw. It is not easily accessible by public transport. Leave a Comment Other Contact: For more see my travelogue.

The Carpathians - Tatras/Tatry mountains by Elodie_Caroline I once had a weird and beautiful dream when I was in my twenties, and in this dream I just 'knew' that I was in the Carpathian mountains, not so strange really, as my forefathers are from Eastern Europe I suppose? In my dream it was a cold Winter's late afternoon, the only colours I could see were a vivid electric blue, ice white, various whites greys and black, but it was beautiful! I was in an old Gothic graveyard on the top edge of a mountain. All I could see were the beautiful old gravestones, thick pure white snow all around on the ground, and there were black ornate wrought iron railings ro stop you going over the edge of the mountain. The sky was the most amazing electric blue that I had ever seen in my life! I just 'know' that this is in the Carpathians and I wonder if anyone can ever tell me where my dream actually took place? I looked up on the net and found out that the Tatras mountains go along the borders in Slovakia & Poland, and are actually the largest range of mountains of the Carpathians! Now try and tell me that we didn't live in lives before this one now.

Pultusk is one of the oldest towns of the Mazowsze region. Pultusk was probably first founded in 1257, but the documentary evidence preserved allows to trace its foundation back to the 1339 year. Each time the invincible town was restored to life. As a result, tourists today can admire its beautiful historical monuments and unique nature. A history lover will find here 400-metre-long Marketplace which is the longest one in Europe, and for Collegiate Church with recently renovated Renaissance frescoes on the vault (known as "the Pultusk vault") in the nave.

Main Square by cheekymarieh Kazimierz Dolny is located on the banks of the River Vistula. It is particulary noted for its architecture. You will find many artists and writers attracted to the town. It is a picturesque area and is seen as one of weekend spots for the people of Warsaw. As a result you will find it more relaxing to visit during the week. In common with many Polish towns it has developed around the central Rynek. There are some varying styles of architecture around the square including Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. One spot well worth visiting is the castle and the Three Crosses Mountain. There are some well marked trails around the area. There is a Jewish monument to those who suffered during the Second World War. Very little remains of the Jewish heritage remains other than the rebuilt synagogue and the monument. Leave a Comment

horse market by sphynxxs On Polandīs oldest and biggest horse market, farmers and traders meet the first monday and tuesday at the beginning of lent. From early morning the main road of the village Skaryszew near Radom in Central Poland is filled with vibrant market atmosphere. There is a lot of traditional trading, a handshake and a round of vodka settling the deal instead of a formal contract. If you are in Warsaw or Radom at that time, try to get there! Leave a Comment

by Sjalen Poznan is a bit of Poland's conference city and you often hear of events here but not much else. This is such a shame as it deserves at least a one day stop on your journey to see the wonderful old town square. Leave a Comment
