 | Poland Off the Beaten Path | Tips 51 - 60 of 189 | | Pulawy is 120 km south from Warsaw and 50 km west from Lublin. There is train connection from Warsaw Central Station (a train every 2 hours) or by bus ?Polski Express? so it's pretty easy to get there and it's really worth to visit. In the Palace-Park Complex you can visit former Czartoryski Palace, the first museum building in Poland, opened in 1801 known as Sybil Temple, the second museum building in Poland, opened in 1809 known as Gothic House, Marynki Palace, Chinese House and beautiful English landscape park of over 60 acres area. The Wieliczka Salt Mine is now on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage places. It's a unique museum - one that will fascinate both adults and children. Mining started here in the 13th century and it is still actively mined. The mine is spread over 9 levels and there are 300 km of galleries - some of which you can visit - by guided-tour only, of course - since it's a maze of galleries. The visit lasts 2 hours and is led by a miner: there are visits in several languages. While miners worked in Wieliczka they also spent some of their free time sculpting the salt in the mine - I'm not sure of the reason, and as a result there are now many chambers with works of art, altars, figures and statues sculpted in salt. It's such a strange, charming place that words can't really do it justice (well, the UNESCO people did, by placing it under their protection). To get there take the Lux-Bus mini-vans leaving regularily (as soon as one is full) from Krakow train station (Dworzec Glowny): the trip costs around 2.50 zloti and takes about 20 minutes. Ask for the "Kopalnia Soli" bus stop and then head uphill for 200 metres. Leave a Comment

The Stolowe Mountains are, I believe, a National Park. This park is also known as the table mountains park. it's located within the Sudeten mountains. Walking around its paths you come across some really bizarre rock formations and canyons. There are deep goroges, too - and climbing walls - and rocks... some shaped like mushrooms, others in precarious balance. There's a clear similarity with some larger and better-known American National Parks, with the advantage that this one is a lot less crowded and developed. Definitely a geologist's delight. Wambierzyce is the Jerusalem of Lower Silesia. It's a little town in the Sudeten mountains, not far from the Czech border. What's interesting about it, is the Czermna - or else the skulls chapel. Next to the church in the picture there's a tiny chapel which, inside, is all made up with skulls and bones. It's an eerie sight, but it's also one of these once-in-a-lifetime chance to see it. Entrance is by guided tour only - and at least as far as when I was there - the tour was only conducted in Polish. Words, however, are unnecessary Leave a Comment

Poznan is a bit of Poland's conference city and you often hear of events here but not much else. This is such a shame as it deserves at least a one day stop on your journey to see the wonderful old town square. Leave a Comment

Treblinka is a memorial to the attrocities of the World War 2. It was hte second largest camp after Auschwitz. Over 800,000 people were executed at this site in the space of 16 months. The central monument says the words ' Never Again'. Scattered around this central statue are 17,000 smaller rocks that represent the number of executions per day. Treblinka is about 2 hours drive from Warsaw. It is not easily accessible by public transport. Leave a Comment Other Contact: For more see my travelogue.

Serious Polish climbers come to the Tatras to train mountaineering. For the not-so-fits, a walk to Lake Morskie Oko is highly achievable. The entire 9km road is paved and is quite crowded with visitors, ranging from the very young and the very old. These were constantly overtaking me, by the way. There is a restaurant in a charming wooden building at Lake Morskie Oko. The weather is always changeable so be very prepared if you are venturing out for longer hikes. The day I was there, the weather did not change… it rained incessantly during my entire hike. Leave a Comment

On our first day in Poland we went for a walk in the Karkonosze National Park. This is a nice park with quite some mountains. Make sure to pack some warm clothes, because one moment it is sunny and another moment the fog can set in. Leave a Comment

The former camp is a Polish State museum now. Most parts of the camp still exist. There is a small exhibition and they show an interesting film about the history of the camp. It is very impressive to visit this camp. Words can not describe how you will feel when you are here. The terrible history makes you quiet and think about what happened in those 5 awful years during World War II. Leave a Comment
