We spent one day in Swinousje. I cannot be recommended. The place is extremely close to the German border and misterously only full of vacating Poles. The place is a dump, and should only be visited if the weather is good enough to go to the beach.

Kaszuby: A lake district in north-central Poland. A great place if you like to walk around meadows, fields and orchards, swiming or sailing. Some Kashubians speak both Polish and a dialect incomprehensible even to the Poles or a mix of both.

Wabrzezno: A town in the Pomerania district with forteen thousand residents. I've spent seven years in Wabrzezno. My dad and grandad still live there, they both have houses by two different lakes. What's interesting about this town is that it's sorrounded by three lakes and there are virtually no tourists there. The picture you can see on the left has been painted by my great grandfather, Bronislaw Stanczewski (I am sorry for the poor quality- will try to improve it in the nearest future)

Chelmno (photo at top of this page, and to the left) is one of the great undiscovered towns of Poland. It's hard to imagine so much history being packed into such a small place. Hundreds of years ago this was one of the most important towns of Poland, as evidenced by the several huge churches (15th-18th centuries) here that are now closed for lack of attendance. The original medieval walls and gates are almost entirely intact, and there are lots of quaint shops and restaurants here as well. Look through the crowded old cemetary just outside the walls for some interesting Germanic leftovers. Best of all, tourists haven't discovered Chelmno yet, and even in the height of the high season (I was there in July) one could walk the streets and tour the buildings in relative peace. The only bad thing about Chelmno is lack of access - trains don't stop here and you will have to take a bus from...

This is not really off the beaten track, but in the bustling centre of Warsaw, though - if you want to catch a glimpse of the climate of change after the downfall of communism, go see the Stadion X-lecia bazar on the eastern side of the vistula river. It´s the place where Poles, Russians, Ukrainians and nationals of different ex-Soviet-states deal everything from kitchen articles to clothes (some of the stolen, some forged labels...) and all kond of bootlegged CDs, video and computer programs. There is quite a strong presence of mafia-guys as well and you have to be aware of pickpockets. however, bargain-shopping is guaranteed, if you are not too law-abiding ;)...You´ll find more about this bazar on my Warsaw page in the travelogue

If you like canoeing, one of the most beautiful routes is along the Krutynia, a small river in Masuria, Northeastern Poland. It usually takes about ten days and includes some of the most beautiful lakes of the region. Since the Krutynia is neither very deep nor wild, even beginners can try the route without problems

by sphynxxs

The Bieszczady mountains in southeastern Poland - they belong to the Carpathian mountains and while they offer no rocks or Alpine character, they are one of the most remote and untouched regions of Poland. In the 1940s the region became almost extinct due to fightings between Polish and Ukrainian forces. Many villages were left forever. If you travel there nowadays, you can rediscover wooden churches, hike across dense woods and get a feeling of the 'wild East' of Poland

by sphynxxs

Kozlowka Museum of Socialist Realism - whether you still remember the grey old days or are too young to know the sounds of the 'Internationale' and the sight of red banners along some Lenin Alley, this is the last reservate in Poland for the out of use Bieruts, Lenins or Stalins. Kozlowka is in Eastern Poland, in the region of Lublin and the main attraction is the castles of the Czartoryski family, one of the richest and most influential aristocrats, well unce upon a time. Even though it may not look very appropriate for proletarian icons, the statues of Communist (or rather Stalinist) adoration are nowadays placed in a side wing of the palace. After the political change nobody seemed to know what to do with all these suddenly surplus Lenins, but just to give a hint of the conception of arts and politics in the ´50s, this museum was opened some years ago. It really has some bizarre...
