by sphynxxs

Grabarka - the 'orthodox Czestochowa'It´s really difficult to get more away from tourist regions - if you want to see Grabarka, you have to go near the Belarussian border. Most travellers going to Poland will have heard about the monastery of Jasna Gora in Czestochowa with the famous picture of the Black Madonna. In Grabarka near the village of Szyce (take the train from Siedlce) you´ll find the Orthodox counterpart. This monastery, set on a hill in a wood, is surrounded by a 'valley of crosses' - pilgrims bring them to pray for the fulfillment of a wish. A very special time to go here is the night of 19.th of august, when thousands of pilgrims from Poland and Belarus spend the night singing and praying on the open ground around the monastery. This is a place to go if you want to catch a glimpse of Eastern Europa within Poland.

there is hardly a place more off the beaten track than bialowieza forest in Eastern Poland, near the Belarussian border. It´s one of the oldest primeval forests of Europe, and one of the very few that survived until today. The national park may be entered only with a licenced guide and there are still bears and wolves living in the areas. It´s also known for its bison reserve. Next inhabited places are the village of Bialowieza and the small town Hajnowka, where the railway from Warsaw or Bialystok towards the Bialowieza region ends.

Holidays in the saddle...

by Janina_B.

Holidays in the saddle organized in famous studs are another special tourist attraction.HORSE RIDING has long been considered a fairly exclusive pastime - and one with very ardent devotees. While it is rather unlikely that anyone today will repeat the offer made by Shakespeare's Richard III, 'A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!', many of those who love these magnificent animals are ready to give a lot to be able to spend their holiday in the saddle. This is easily arranged in Poland, which can claim stables and studs of established international repute.

Over 300 BISON live in the...

by Janina_B.

Over 300 BISON live in the Bialowieski Forest, the largest such herd in the world. Foreigners paying a visit here are intrigued by this - to them - exotic beast, which had long since disappeared in other parts of Europe (in England at the end of the 12th century, in France and Italy in the 14th). By the early twentieth century, excessive hunting, poaching, and the havoc of World War I had almost killed off the European bison. In 1919 the last one left in Poland's Bialowieska Forest fell, and in 1925 the last one in the Caucasus was killed. They were the last two left in the wild. Fortunately some remained in zoos and private refuges. In the 1920's, at the initiative of the Polish zoologist Jan Sztolcman, the International Society for Preservation of the European Bison was established. Today these animals are allowed to live free in protected wilderness areas.

by Janina_B.

ZUBROWKA - BISON BRAND VODKA owes its delicate flavour to bison grass, which grows only in the wild in small clumps scattered all over the Bialowieska Forest glades and meadows. There have been numerous attempts to cultivate it for commercial purposes but the farmed grass could not match the real thing.

by Janina_B.

BIALOWIEZA FOREST (Puszcza Bialowieska) is listed by UNESCO as one of the monuments of the world heritage. It is the last natural forest with the elements of the primordial forest (Bialowieski National Park) in Central Europe. There are enourmous oak trees, pines and spruce over 50 metres high. It is a habitat of lynx and beaver. Horse-cart excursions through the most interesting parts of the reserve take 4 hours.

Polish APICULTURE is...

by Janina_B.

Polish APICULTURE is 99-percent dominated by small private beekeeping farms, most of them owned by elderly people for whom beekeeping is either a long-standing hobby or an additional source of income.Domestic production of 13,000 tonnes annually fully satisfies the needs of the market (per capita annual consumption of honey in Poland is 350 g). The fashion for a healthy lifestyle should spur its consumption. There is hope among honey producers that despite the lack of funds for its promotion, honey will make a comeback under the guise of a folk remedy.

The village of Znin, which can be reached by slow train (osobowy) from Inowroclaw (on the railway line between Poznan and Gdansk), is a good base for going to Biskupin. The campiste is at ul. Szkolna 16. Znin itself has a nice old church and ethnographic museum. A small tourist train (the station is across the street from the 'real' train station) goes to Wenecje, Biskupin and Gasawa several times daily. Tickets (single, not return) cost 5 zl.
