The Carpathians - Tatras/Tatry mountains

by Elodie_Caroline

I once had a weird and beautiful dream when I was in my twenties, and in this dream I just 'knew' that I was in the Carpathian mountains, not so strange really, as my forefathers are from Eastern Europe I suppose? In my dream it was a cold Winter's late afternoon, the only colours I could see were a vivid electric blue, ice white, various whites greys and black, but it was beautiful! I was in an old Gothic graveyard on the top edge of a mountain. All I could see were the beautiful old gravestones, thick pure white snow all around on the ground, and there were black ornate wrought iron railings ro stop you going over the edge of the mountain. The sky was the most amazing electric blue that I had ever seen in my life! I just 'know' that this is in the Carpathians and I wonder if anyone can ever tell me where my dream actually took place?I looked up on the net and found out that the Tatras...

The Church of Corpus Christi in Krakow

by Paul2001

Koœció³ Bo¿ego Cia³a, the Church of Corpus Christi, is a fine Gothic church located in Krakow's Kazimierz district. This part of the city, though historically important, does not receive the masses of tourist that the Stare Miasto does. Hence the Church of Corpus Christigoes largely unnoticed by foreigner tourists. In fact the only people inside of the large building was a local bible study class. Although Gothic, the church has some baroque features in the interior most notably the choir stalls and pulpit. The facade of the church is typical Polish Gothic and has a high, impressive steeple.

The city of Niepolomice

by Arial_27

Niepolomice is a small city in southern Poland. There is a beautiful church there, an restored palace, and a gothic hunting castle nearby as well. I visited the city because my friend got married here in the church, which had to be one of the most beautiful churches I'd ever seen, and her reception was held in the restored castle. The town might be nice for an afternoon to get away from some of the extremely touristy places in Krakow and enjoy some of the food, architecture and history that Poland has.

Mazury- Swieta Lipka

by zaffaran

Swieta Lipka is a must when you are in Mazury. This small village is important because of two reasons -religious (St. Mary's sanctuary) and because it has one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Poland. It's also famous for its 18th century organs - in summer organ concerts are held.To get to Swieta Lipka you must follow road No 594 from Ketrzyn to Bisztynek. The road is quite narrow but not that bad and it goes through beautiful countryside.Swieta Lipka is definitely worth paying a visit!

St. John's Cathedral in Warsaw

by Paul2001

St. John's Cathedral is the first religious building that I visited in Poland. It is a rather sad place for it seems to have lost much of its grandeur that it probably had before the destruction of Warsaw's old town during World War II. It has since been restored but largely neglected just the same by the Communist government. Hence the interior is rather barren and far from decorative. The cathedral was originally built in the 14th century in the distinctive Mazovian Gothic style. This was actually the most impressive feature of the building. Another sad fact about the St. John's Cathedral is that it is rather hard to take a picture of because of its setting in a side street. This photograph was taken from several blocks away and only the top half is visible. Still the church is the most important religious building in Warsaw and one should visit it if you want to get some education on...

Bridges in Zulawy

by zaffaran

Zulawy is a flat area which is crossed by rivers and canals. When you are there be careful about Tujsk and Rybina- there are two bascule bridges and it may occur that while driving you'll be waiting there. If you have a ride by a narrow-gauge train from Stegna to Nowy Dwor Gdanski you'll see a unique swing bridge for for those trains. In the pic on the yellow board there are times when the bridge is open for yachts to sail through.

Mennonite remains

by zaffaran

I definitely advise you to explore Zulawy - the area east of Gdansk while driving from Gdansk to Mazury or Warsaw. It will not take you much time, just drive a little bit off the beaten path to see the remains of hardworking and deeply faithful Mennonites who came there in searching peace and freedom. Just visit Drewnica, Zulawki, Lubieszewo or Orlowo. Look around very carefully to spot beautiful houses (unfortunately very often in a poor condition)

Radzyn Chelminski-another teutonic castle.

by zaffaran

If you have a car you can have a very interesting trip visiting teutonic castles along the Wisla. One of them is Radzyn Chelminski, then Kwidzyn, Gniew, Sztum and of course Malbork for the dessert. The castle in Radzyn was built in 13th/14th century, you can visit the ruins and climb up one of the towers. Warning!Very little space on the top of the tower! In the town a gothic church is also worth paying a visit.Radzyn is situated by the road No 534 from Grudziadz to Golub-Dobrzyn.
