A unique aqueduct.

by zaffaran

A 19th century aqueduct built to cross two streams (one natural and one artificial) - one over another. Not many guide-books mention this place as it't hidden deeply in Bory Tucholskie - a forest area south-western off Gdansk and Gdynia. Unfortunately- accessible only by car- from road No 22in Czersk turn left into road No 237 to Tuchola. After some kilometres turn right (follow the signs).

Dynow-sleepy but nice!

by zaffaran

Poland is full of places "off the beaten path" in which time flows slowly. Dynow is one of such places. A very nice spot when you drive from Bieszczady to central Poland. What I really recommend is to drive not only along main roads but choose side ones. Going from Sanok to Rzeszow in Grabownica Starzenska turn right into road No 835 to Dynow , Lancut (a fantastic palace and park to visit!) or Lezajsk. Have a break in Dynow- to see a Renaissance church or a manor. Definitely visit a cafe (in fact it's a bakery) near the market square-it has a great name : Genesis (!). It offers a wide variety of home-made cakes (you don't know what to choose!) and not bad coffee.

Shrine on the road to...

by Pawtuxet

This shrine was on the road to Pajezsno...which is a little town just north of Czestochowa. This was one of the more elaborate shrines I photographed. The image of the woman with her bicycle and the shrine and the sky are so "everyday Poland" to me.One day I'd like to photograph all the shrines around the roadways in Poland and create a little photograph book. I think they are the most wonderful primitive art. There are mini shrines all along the roadways in the country. Keep your eye open for them. We saw many. Each one is different...a testament to the devout people who created them. They use these shrines for short visits to pray when they cannot take the time to reach the nearest church. I've never seen such spiritual people anywhere. Their religion has been there throughout their darkest hours for centuries.

PAJEZSNO ~ People helping people

by Pawtuxet

Pajezsno was an interesting experience in our tour thru Poland in search for my ancestors. I "met" Romek on line thru Ancestry.com... same as Gosia, our guide. Romek, (tall high school student at left of photo) built his own computer...welcomed us to his town...introduced us to his mother (center of photo) - who worked at the town hall. His mother searched the town's records for our family name ...to no avail. But she connected us to a high school teacher who had written a book about the town and its history. We visited the high school and caused quite a stir w/ teachers and students. Who are these crazy Americans in our town? They don't have many visitors .. especially from the USA. The whole experience was fascinating for everyone concerned that day. Pajezsno is a simple little town with no particular distinguishing landmarks. Maybe that is why we had the experience we had....

Be watchful!

by zaffaran

In Poland I always recommend driving along side roads.I agree, their quality is not very good, but they are quite empty and you can pay more attention to surroundings. One thing which is very cute is that in Poland you can see numerous stork nestles and birds themselves as Poland is called their homeland.

Pultusk

by ZiOOlek

Pultusk is one of the oldest towns of the Mazowsze region. Pultusk was probably first founded in 1257, but the documentary evidence preserved allows to trace its foundation back to the 1339 year. Each time the invincible town was restored to life. As a result, tourists today can admire its beautiful historical monuments and unique nature. A history lover will find here 400-metre-long Marketplace which is the longest one in Europe, and for Collegiate Church with recently renovated Renaissance frescoes on the vault (known as "the Pultusk vault") in the nave.

Sucha Beskidzka

by ZiOOlek

There are several interesting and valuable cultural monuments in the region, of which a few at least should not be missed. One of these is the Renaissance palace in Sucha called "the little Wawel". It stands at the foot of Mt. Jasien, surrounded by a park in which you can find the "gardner's house" with its regional museum, open seasonally. At the beginning of the XVIIth century a church- monestary complex was built on the heights above the Sucha market square. It was here that the Lateran brothers had their base. It is certainly worthwhile seeing the wooden inn `Rzym` (Rome) built in the middle of the XVIIIth century. This inn on the market square in Sucha has welcomed not only merchants and travelers, but the infamous local highwaymen as well.

A visit to Jaroslaw

by zaffaran

Not a big city these days but of long and famous history dated back to the 13 century. If you are in south-eastern Poland and you drive E-40 from Rzeszow to Przemysl just stop for a while to look around or visit cellars in which there used to be warehouses as Jaroslaw was famous for its trade.

Kosciol Farny Sw Marii Magdaleny

by Paul2001

I thought that the Kosciol Farny Sw Marii Magdaleny was the finest examples of Baroque architecuture that I visited in Poland. The building was constructed in 1733 as a parish church for the local Jesuits who had a college nearby. It has a striking salmon coloured facade. The interior is elobrately decorated in the Baroque manner with soaring frescos and stuccoed columns. There are also many captivating alterpieces located in the various side chapels. Of particular note is a large painting over the high alter of St. Stanislaw resurrection of a dead landowner to testify at his trial when accused by the King to have illegally incorporated a village. On Saturday's they have organ recitals at noon.

A peacefull valey...

by earendil

Situated at the 30 km, north of Krakow, is the National Park of Ojcowski. It's a jurassic valley surrounded by a nice beech forest with big rock made of clear limestone with a small river in the back.A lot of easy walks are signed and you can also visit old castles and caves. Many "noclegi" helps you if you need to sleep there. In Ojcow, the small village, there is a nice bar, in the basement of the post office, called "the bat" (but in polish, i can't remember) where you can find nice food, a wood fire and you also can play chess during a cold autumn evening.Only one problem !! they don't have vodka. In autumn, the valley is very nice with the colours of the trees and you could see animals during a early walk in the nature.
