Czluchow and its castle...

by zaffaran

As you are driving from Berlin to Gdansk (E-22)and you have just eaten your lunch at Canpol(see my restaurant tip), have a nice stroll in the ruins of the Teutonic castle which used to be the second biggest Teutonic castle in this part of Europe(after this in Malbork). It used to be because now there are only remains i.e. a tower, a chapel (which was trasformed into a concert hall and some castle walls. In summer you can climb to the top of the tower, but even if it is off season you can go for a stroll in the park which is surrounded by a lake. Have a nice time!

The Beskidy Mts.

by magor65

The part of the Beskidy Mts I want to present here is called Beskid Slaski. It's here in Barania Gora that the Vistula river has its springs. We can say that Beskid Slaski is a 'civilised range'. Easily accessible, it also has a wide range of accommodation and good restaurants. The reason I put it in Off The Beaten Path section is because it's not frequently visited by foreign tourists. The biggest town of the region is Bielsko-Biala, but I would suggest staying in some smaller places, like Ustron, Szczyrk or Wisla (Adam Malysz - best Polish ski-jumper lives here). If you like folklore you must visit tri-village: Istebna-Koniakow-Jaworzynka. In Koniakow you can buy beautiful hand-made laces and in Istebna you can see an old highlander hut from the 19th century with a collection of musical instruments. If hiking is not your favourite activity, Beskid Slaski allows you to drive your car to...

Trzesacz - western Pomerania

by magor65

Trzesacz is a little town in western Pomerania. It's mainly known for the ruins of an old gothic church - the clear evidence of the destructive power of the sea. Today we can only admire the remains of one brick wall standing lonely on the cliff shore. For centuries the sea got closer and closer to the building, and in the 19th century the church had to be closed for safety reasons. The first wall collapsed in 1901 and then the next followed. It's verey likely that soon there will be nothing left of te church. After more than 100 years it is bound to lose its fight with the powerful sea.

Kazimierz Dolny

by Enzyme_X

Kazimerz Dolny is a smallish town, some 100 km south-east from Warshaw. It's stands on the bank of Wisla river. This town is kind of funny. It's so far north but I got a feeling like being in some alpine village. You can see some very beautiful houses here.

A missing olympic games?

by Kentishlad

If you are Wroclaw go to the outskirts to visit the olympic site (at the heart of it is still the Olympic Hotel, if you need directions). This was built just before the war when Nazi Germany was hoping to get a second Olympics after Berlin. The stadium is still used by the football team, but the swimming pool is overgrown and olympic symbols are still on display. In the hotel is the pre-war map, where you can see that the new roads built to service the place were named after senior Nazi officials, from Hitler downwards.

The Krakowska Gate in Lublin

by Paul2001

The Krakowska Gate is one of the more interesting ancient buildings in Lublin. The gate dominates the Rynek. The gate was originally built in the 14th century and was used in the defense of the city against the Mongul hordes. There is has been numerous additions to it over the centuries. Today the gate is has been handsomely restored and is the home of a historical museum that I did not visit.

Torun's Muzeum Etnograficzne

by Paul2001

The Muzeum Etnograficzne or the Ethnographic Museum could be an engaging museum but alas I never got inside of it. To bad because it was raining like mad outside. Instead the museum for reasons I could not understand was closed despite the fact that my guidebood said that it should be open. That was the case with the actual museum building. What was in fact open was the small open-air museum which has excellent exhibits about North Poland folk art and history. These exhibits are all held in recreated wooden buildings from Poland's past including a blacksmith shop, a windmill and water mill. On display are tools, lace, clothing and furniture from Poland's past. I enjoyed this part of the museum but it did not get me out of the rain. The museum is located about 750m north of the Stare Miasto in Torun. It is suppose to be open from 9am to 4pm on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays or from 10am to...

Zamosc

by rollinstone81

Zamosc is one of the most beautiful cities in Poland, it features a faszinating old town, its on the UN world heritage site list. But the city also has a dark site: During the Nazi occupation Himmler liked the city so much that this *** decided the city had to be germanized. The city was then called Himmlerstadt. Well, I like Zamosc better, its beautiful, go there.

Swidnica

by Paul2001

I stopped in Swidnica on my way to visit the castle Ksiaz. I was surprised as the town turned out to be quite charming and well worth visiting if you are in this part of Silesia. The town of Swidnica has bustley rynek with the usual brightly painted facades that you find elsewhere in Poland. The rynek and most of the town managed to escaped damage during the Second World War. This is something of a miracle since there was much fighting in the region. Probably the highlight for a visit to Swidnica is the Chuch of Peace, one of the finest wooden churches in Europe. There are several other interesting churches in the town but they have eradicte opening times. I found that the town tourist office, located in the rynek, was especially helpful. The one flaw I found with the town was that it had a rather bleak train station. Thankfully I took the bus to Swidnica instead.

where Chassidism was born and Elimelech rests

by sphynxxs

Lezajsk in Southeastern Poland is a small town known as one of the birthplaces of chassisdism. More than 300 years ago Elimelech Weissblum, one of the founders of Chassidism lived here, admired and sought for counsel not only from Jews, but also Catholic and Orthodox Christians. Over the past years, his tomb has become a destination of pilgrimage for orthodox Jews from all over the world.
