The Town Museum of Zamosc

by Paul2001

Probably the most notable aspect of this museum is not its exhibitions but the stunning facade to the building itself. The facade is both wildly painted in bright colours and beautifully adorned in stucco sculpture. It actually consists of several building along a row on the north side of the Rynek. As for the interior of the museum, the best I can say is that it the exhibits are well displayed but hardly remarkable or memorable. Naturally enought they focus on the history and culture of the local region. The museum is open from 10am to 4pm and it cost 4zl to visit. It is closed on Mondays.

The Warsaw Uprising Monument

by Paul2001

To honour those who fought and died in the Warsaw uprising in 1944, the local governement, then communist, built this mezmerizing monument. The insurgents are depicted here emerging from the manholes to confront the Nazis. The monument is located outside of the National Courts at plac Krasinskich.

This is Arctowski (Poland)

by Sharrie

Ok, I don't care how many times you've been to Poland or how close you live near its borders. But I can bet less than 10 people on this site will have this Polish territory as their first "landing" on Polish soil & also as the "off the beaten path"!ARCTOWSKI - The Polish Antarctic Station is the 1st place I visited in January this year that's "officially" Polish. That made it my "first entry" into Poland in record ;-)Known as Henryk Arctowski, it was completed in 1977 & located at (62°14'16"S, 58°28'15"W) Admiralty Bay, King George Island. To read more about this station, please proceed to its official website - click here.

The Castle Ruins of Torun

by Paul2001

The castle of Torun is in complete ruins however this should not stop you from visiting them. They give you a good impression of the scale of the original Teutonic castle that dominated the town. The castle is located close to the riverfront between the "old" and "new" towns of Torun.

Horse market in Skaryszew

by sphynxxs

On Poland´s oldest and biggest horse market, farmers and traders meet the first monday and tuesday at the beginning of lent. From early morning the main road of the village Skaryszew near Radom in Central Poland is filled with vibrant market atmosphere. There is a lot of traditional trading, a handshake and a round of vodka settling the deal instead of a formal contract. If you are in Warsaw or Radom at that time, try to get there!

Cemetery in Zakopane

by Paul2001

While wondering around Zakopane, I happened upon this quaint cemetery. What I especially liked about it was the carved wooden tombstones. All were done in a unique still. Another aspect that I liked about it was that it was engulfed by green forest. It created a very pleasant atmosphere. Overall I thought that it gave some insight into the local culture of the Tatras Mountains.

Russian Market

by cintrella

Poles call this place the Russian Market. It essentially is a bunch of stalls in a stadium with people peddling everything from circa 1982 addidas sunglasses to war memorabilia. Keep your purse close though! It's very crowded.

Rafting in the Tatras

by loutzenhiser

Outside of the resort town of Zakopane there is the nearby Pieniny National Park, that offers a wonderful all-day rafting trip. The trip is in traditional wooden 'canoes' lashed together and each boat holds about 15 people. The river is mild (no rapids) but the surrounding landscape is gorgeous and the trip is very peaceful. As the river winds through the park, you cross into Slovakia, then back into Poland. Several of the guided trips available at the Zakopane Tourist office include a trip to a traditional onion-domed wooden church and a wonderful stone castle.

Kazimierz Dolny

by cheekymarieh

Kazimierz Dolny is located on the banks of the River Vistula. It is particulary noted for its architecture. You will find many artists and writers attracted to the town. It is a picturesque area and is seen as one of weekend spots for the people of Warsaw. As a result you will find it more relaxing to visit during the week. In common with many Polish towns it has developed around the central Rynek. There are some varying styles of architecture around the square including Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. One spot well worth visiting is the castle and the Three Crosses Mountain. There are some well marked trails around the area. There is a Jewish monument to those who suffered during the Second World War. Very little remains of the Jewish heritage remains other than the rebuilt synagogue and the monument.

Close to the border with Czech Rep, in the south west crner of Poland lies a range of mountains called the Sudety. We drove on a road which cut straight through and then wound high up into the mountains themselves for an incredible view.
