While staying in the area of the Pieniny Mountains it might be interesting to visit at least one of the local cemeteries to see some of the traditionally decorated graves, with wooden crosses and a sloping cover like a roof to protect the wooden figure of Christ on the cross from snow in the winter. Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer of them, as modern highlanders prefer to erect marble or stone tombs on their relatives' graves to show off their wealth. In the photo, a flower-decorated grave in the traditional style, though, judging by the condition of the wood, not old at all.

Just east of the Tatra Mountains there is another mountain range, much smaller but very beautiful. Lying on both sides of the Dunajec River which cuts across it, it is part Polish and part Slovakian....
