Pieniny Things to Do

  • Rafting trips on the Dunajec

It's one of the most beautiful and enjoyable trips that you can take in Poland. On the Polish side you get on the raft, which consists of five boats put together, at Katy. There are also some Slovakian rafts setting off from the other bank of the Dunajec. The Polish raftsmen are local people dressed in their national costume or at least wearing...

  • Czorsztyn Castle and Reservoir

I have never visited Czorsztyn Castle. When we were in the area, it was just a ruin and dangerous to explore. But reconstruction work has been going on since and it is now apparently worth visiting. Admission 4 zl, concessions 2 zl. The castle sits on top of a hill overlooking what looks like an enormous lake. Only ten years ago there would have...

  • Oscypek tasting

This Polish specialite is usually connected with Tatra region. But the Pienniny oscypeks are also good or even better. This cheese (this is not a cottage cheese) is made from mix of sheep and cow milk, formed in the shapes of small barrels (spindle-shaped) or something like a dumpling and smoked. So first advice: Oscypek sold in autumn/winter time...

Rafting is the most known way of relax in Pieniny. But this is different activity than rafting done in mountainous river in Alps or Wild West. You are travelling in wooden raft controlled by Pieniny highlander in local costume. You don't have to wear a helmet and use some paddle. It's more like travelling in Venice gondola.Rafts set out from...

The only way to cruise along The Dunajec would be by rafts..but reaching Katy ( the place where the rafting starts...) is possible by any transportations....even walking!!!

Hiking is also the best way to enjoy the mountain areas around The Pieniny.

While staying in the area of the Pieniny Mountains it might be interesting to visit at least one of the local cemeteries to see some of the traditionally decorated graves, with wooden crosses and a sloping cover like a roof to protect the wooden figure of Christ on the cross from snow in the winter. Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer of them, as modern highlanders prefer to erect marble or stone tombs on their relatives' graves to show off their wealth. In the photo, a flower-decorated grave in the traditional style, though, judging by the condition of the wood, not old at all.

Pieniny Warnings and Dangers

  • Beware of rain!

Rain can change the mountain trails of the Pieniny Mountains into muddy brooks filled with clay. Walking on the slippery paths may not be much fun, even if you are wearing suitable shoes, and can even be dangerous in the upper parts of the mountains. Make sure you don't find yourself on one of the viewing platforms at the top of any of the steep...

Unfortuantely during my stay in Pieniny I met twice or three times the situation when info about opening hours (bar, restaurant, small shop) was different than real opening time. So be careful - especially before or after the main season (july-august) - you can be hungry (and angry :) when restaurant described on the door "Open from 10am - 10pm" is closed much before ending time.

Pieniny What to Pack

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Polish weather is unpredictable...espescially in the mountains. Don't think that because it's sunny in the morning it will be nice all day, or vice versa. Take some extra clothes, and prepare for the weather if possible. Pieniny is wonderful, but moreso if you're well prepared.

Pieniny Favorites

Favorite thing: The Pieniny Mountains are an area of great natural beauty. All kinds of wild plants abound here, creepers climb the steep rocks , masses of flowers can be found in the valleys and high on the mountain faces. Some of the plants are endemic to the area, which means they cannot be found anywhere else. Trees grow high on the mountainsides, so that sometimes it's hard to see how they feed there. There is a pine on Trzy Korony which everybody takes photos of as it seems to grow literally on nothing but rock. Nature still proudly demonstrates its power here. And I hope it will for some time yet before the hordes of tourists (700,000) that come here every year trample it to the ground, unless the local authorities limit access to the park for groups.
