Pod Sasonem in Warsaw, near the central old town is very good and reasonable. Krakow has many, inexpensive and good quality restaurants (many with menus in English) -- if you're growing weary of Polish food, check out one of the branches of Grace Pizzeria.
The many varieties of pierogi are yummy and filling. The old women selling a molded, caramel colored food item on the streets -- it's a very salty farmer's cheese. All over Krakow are sidewalk vendors selling 'falafel', which is actually a version of what we and the greeks would call 'gyros' (it's pieces of grilled meat rather than fried balls like what we call falafel). They cost about $1.25 and are very filling. Theme: Other

by matcrazy1 Original 19th century wooden cottage inn - beautiful inside, outside hmmm...so,so. First floor for non smoking. Three chambers on the ground floor. Delicious original polish homemade cousine: home-baked bread and traditional Polish dishes such as hand made pierogi, roasts, bigos and all sorts of soups; no juices, only water, compote, beer, vodka to drink; some dishes served in wooden bowls with wooden spoons, all handmade. Very, very nice stuff. Credit cards (Visa) accepted. CHEAP! Beer(0,5l) - 6,50zl=1,8E=1,56$. . The restaurant was awarded the prestigous Teraz Polska (Poland Now) promotional logo by the President of Poland. . Access by a car only. . There is a small net of restaurants "Chlopskie jadlo" now - all in the same style and all serve the same food. There are in: 1. Krakow - ul. Sw. Agnieszki 1 (ul. means ulica=street) in the old town; 2. Krakow - ul. Sw. Jana 3 (the old town); 3. Zakopane - ul. Zaruskiego 2 (on the corner of main street Krupowki opposite the post office); 4. Bielsko Biala (opening in 2002 - to seat 200) - wow, it's only 30 min. driving from my hometown, must go there. .
Look at my bill: grochowka (Military soup=pureed bean soup - 8.00zl=2.21E=1.92$), micha pierogowa (big bowl of dumplings, 15 various - with mushrooms, sauerkraut, meat and cheese - 15.00zl=3,32E=2,88$), grzaniec (hot beer with honey and some spices - 12.00zl=3,32E=2,88$); home-baked bread with specially prepared lard - served gratis. this is another restaurant memory more than a favourite, although it was alright. our group would often split up and go out for meals in smaller groups. most people chose to go to mcdonald's then, but i prefered to try the local cuisine. (plus it was agony for me, not being able to get nuts on my sundaes...) so one day a few friends and i chose a random restaurant and went in... it made a great story to tell when we got back together with the rest of the group. while most of them were eating the same food they could have eaten anywhere in the civilized world, we had excellent local cuisine and we didn't even know what it was.
.. now, most places would have the menus in polish and english, or the waitress would speak enough english to explain the dish a bit. this place, the menu was only in polish and the waitress couldn't speak a word of english... and as the only polish we'd learned was thank you and excuse me, that wasn't much help either. so we ended up ordering things that we had no idea as to what they were and eating them anyway. i went with one of the cheapest things on the menu, figuring that if it was crap, at least i wouldn't have spent much. it was alright. most everybody was happy and a few of those who weren't traded meals. mcdonald's another thing that was interesting was that the sundaes came in little cup cones... they were cup shaped but they were edible. very nice touch.
well isn't wasn't really my favourite restaurant... i do have better taste than that... sometime on the trip i got a strong craving for a hot fudge sundae with nuts and i usually have them without nuts... i spent many nights at mcdonald's trying to explain nuts to them with no polish on my side and very little english on theirs.... i kept coming away unsatisfied, with nutless sundaes. sigh. it wasn't their fault though. i was the freak who had to have nuts. SAY YES TO SLOW FOOD... yes, SLOW - FOOD means local culture, local jobs, local tradition... some more opportunity for LOCAL development!!! And more enjoiement of your travels.... if you can have 'globalized food' at home, why having it while travelling? I'm supporting the lichinga's slow food campaign :-)
sometimes it's quite hard to understand in advance what your going to ask... but it's part of the game! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Being in Poland try typical national Polish dishes: 1. Ukrainian Borsch (totaly different in the Ukraine) = barszcz ukraiński 2. Greek-Style Fish (totaly different in Greece) = ryba po grecku 3. Russian Piroggs (totaly different in Russia) = ruskie pierogi 4. Lithuenian boiled meat balls (Gosh, how to translate it) = kolduny po litewsku 5. Bretonian-Style backed beans = fasolka po bretońsku and drink Turkish coffee prepared the Polish way. Enjoy your meal. Leave a Comment Theme: Local

We used to call it "strawberry soup" for its beautiful pinky colour when mixed with cream. But it is actually made of sugar beet and its taste is horrible. We could not get used to it, although it was served very often in Poland. We could manage it with the dumplings, but never with the strawberry soup. Leave a Comment Theme: Local
