Gazdowka: My first Polish meal

This was my first foray into true traditional Polish food. The menu is in both Polsih and English languages and my waiter spoke English. The decor of the resataurant is of a log cabin or hunters lodge. I found the menu somewhat funny as the English translations were interesting. The two that I remember were in the appetizers section. They were "wing of bird with 3 sauces" and "toasted bread with grease". After I placed my order for my food they brought me a basket with rye bread. With this they brought a tub of lard and a tub of white cheese with herbs. I tried a very small amount of the lard on a bite of bread and it was absolutely horrendous. It looked just like bacon grease that your grandparents always saved. The white cheese with herbs was very close to a goat cheese with herbs. It was tasty. I orderd the "soup for a famous shepard", in America we would call this Sausage Soup! It...

This small restaurant near both the Rynek Glowny and the train station offers a large selection of Polish food in a cozy setting. The prices are very reasonable and many locals eat there as well - always a good recommendation in my opinion. Order whatever you like as long as it comes with the mashed potatoes. My goodness they are amazing! I don't know what they do differently but they are heavenly. The rest of the food offered here is great so it doesn't really matter what you order you're sure to have an enjoyable meal.

Milk bars: Polish food

Polish food is very filling and at times quite fatty, favourites include bigos (pork meat), glomki (meat fried in cabbage) and pierogi (similar to russian dumplings but quite stodgy). In communist times locals often went to milk bars and ate these Polish staples to stave off the harsh winters.

CHLOPSKIE JADLO: AVOID AT ALL COSTS

For those of you that don't know, there is a fabulous salt mine outside of Krakow (Wieliczka). I reckon this restaurant has got shares in it. They serve salt dressed up as food! If you haven't got high blood pressure before you go in you certainly will have by the time you leave!The photo of the statue by the entrance door says it all!BEWARE!

If you travel by car don't ba affraid to stop for a nice meel ar raod (not highway;-) restaurant.You will be surprised with the quality of the food especially if you are meat eater.Those places serve not only tourists but also profesional drivers who love good polish food. If you see cars on the parking lot or even better if you see an 18-whiller - it is a sign that place has great food!Check out our pictures! Dictionary:Karczma - old style polish restaurant.

Zamek Krokowa - kawiarnia: Good coffee and stylish surroundings

Both-the restaurant and the cafe in the castle are stylish. As it was about noon we chose a sip of cappuccino and some dessert. A piece of cheesecake (freshly home baked) with fruit was really yummy. The staff was invisible but very efficient.Cappuccino was also good. Comfortable sofas and armachairs made our visit to the cafe absolutely great.

Gniewko: Take a rest and eat something.

A very good place to have a stop when you drive along road No 1 Lodz - Gdansk , situated in Mala Karczma (a few kilometres fro Gniew) by the lake. We took roast pork with potatoes and green salad, and shashlik with rice and green salad. Food was very tasty and affordable.

When you are on your way from Lodz to Gdansk (Rd No 1) turn left to visit the town of Chelmno. When you get hungry- go to Karczma Chelminska, which is not far from the main Market Square, by the town walls. It's placed in the aold building and organized in a nice way. I ordered a pork stuff with bacon, green beans and baked potatoes . It was very good, although maybe a bit too salty. For dessert I took hot apple pie with ice cream and tea. Everything was very good.

If you happen to be in Torun, don't miss a coffee (and tea) house situated in the main Market Square. You can drink your coffee inside or outside if the weather is ok. You can also buy coffee in beans or some china. Latte macchiato was excellent, and sorbet ice cream was yummy. A perfect place to relax between visiting attractions of the Old Town of Torun! An apple pie looks completely different from what you know and is also yummy!Worth mentioning is also that you can choose from numerous kinds of coffee.
