Really great food everywhere...

by catdockev

Really great food everywhere you turn. Bagels too! There is homestyle cooking as well as Polish cuisine. The Old Town Square in Warsaw is surrounded by eateries. Try them all! In Krakow, try the restaurants near the Cloth Market. In smaller villages good homecooked food is easy to find. There are also small Deli style shops everywhere that are filled with food to buy.

I have never eat in expensive restaurants. I like the best restaurants which are called 'bar mleczny'. It is very cheap, traditional polish cuisine, a lot of poorstudents there and not exclusive at all.Price - very low;Open- all days long;atmosphere - you can meet there students and professors, beggers and businessmen 'pierogi leniwe'- kind of noodles with sugar and butter;'bigos' - cabage stew;several kind of soups ( my favourite is cucumber soup);'schabowy z ziemniakami' - schnizel with potatoes

Pod Sasonem in Warsaw, near...

by Annabella

Pod Sasonem in Warsaw, near the central old town is very good and reasonable. Krakow has many, inexpensive and good quality restaurants (many with menus in English) -- if you're growing weary of Polish food, check out one of the branches of Grace Pizzeria. The many varieties of pierogi are yummy and filling. The old women selling a molded, caramel colored food item on the streets -- it's a very salty farmer's cheese. All over Krakow are sidewalk vendors selling 'falafel', which is actually a version of what we and the greeks would call 'gyros' (it's pieces of grilled meat rather than fried balls like what we call falafel). They cost about $1.25 and are very filling.

by mmgizthang

My favorite restaurant was in Boleslaweic, it was a tiny, out of the way Bistro. We were starving and stumbled upon it accidently. The food was excellent....a 1/2 roasted chicken, slaw, potatoes and drink for under $2.00.The atmosphere was very European...great lighting, small, intimate table settings and excellent service. Roast Chicken...delicicious.

this is another restaurant...

by TheFish

this is another restaurant memory more than a favourite, although it was alright.our group would often split up and go out for meals in smaller groups. most people chose to go to mcdonald's then, but i prefered to try the local cuisine. (plus it was agony for me, not being able to get nuts on my sundaes...) so one day a few friends and i chose a random restaurant and went in...it made a great story to tell when we got back together with the rest of the group. while most of them were eating the same food they could have eaten anywhere in the civilized world, we had excellent local cuisine and we didn't even know what it was. .. now, most places would have the menus in polish and english, or the waitress would speak enough english to explain the dish a bit. this place, the menu was only in polish and the waitress couldn't speak a word of english... and as the only polish we'd learned was...

mcdonald's

by TheFish

mcdonald'sanother thing that was interesting was that the sundaes came in little cup cones... they were cup shaped but they were edible. very nice touch. well isn't wasn't really my favourite restaurant... i do have better taste than that... sometime on the trip i got a strong craving for a hot fudge sundae with nuts and i usually have them without nuts... i spent many nights at mcdonald's trying to explain nuts to them with no polish on my side and very little english on theirs.... i kept coming away unsatisfied, with nutless sundaes. sigh. it wasn't their fault though. i was the freak who had to have nuts.

SAY YES TO SLOW FOOD... yes,...

by utttz

SAY YES TO SLOW FOOD... yes, SLOW - FOOD means local culture, local jobs, local tradition... some more opportunity for LOCAL development!!! And more enjoiement of your travels.... if you can have 'globalized food' at home, why having it while travelling?I'm supporting the lichinga's slow food campaign :-) sometimes it's quite hard to understand in advance what your going to ask... but it's part of the game!

Did not have a bad eating...

by belost

Did not have a bad eating experience in Krakow, all the resturants are very tourist orientated. Warsaw is another thing. Though I don't remember the name of the restaurent we had the most delicious time at. When I remember it I will add it. The surrounding country side is very, very poor and the accomodations outside of the major cities are very cheap but basic. All polish food for me was different. Most is rather bland. Small portions.
