Commuter trains (Osobowie) run approximately every 15 minutes to Gdynia (9km) and Gdansk (12km).
As mentioned on the main page, from mid-May until the end of September, excursion boats run between Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot and across to Hel.
The tourist office is at ul. Dworcowa 4, across from the train station.

Sopot is very small and pedestrian accessible. From the train station where you will be deposited you can walk to all the hotels, the pier, the boardwalk, and the downtown area.

All these towns Gdansk, Sopot & Gdynia are all connected by regional trains. Very frequent.
Sopot is also an easy reach from Warsaw.
I took the regional train from Gdansk (which I arrived from Warsaw on the same day) to be in Sopot.
The photo shows Sopot train station. It would probably looked like this 20 years ago. I like that very much !

Okay, there is a taxi guy in Sopot called Marion, he is probably in his mid sixties, and just reminds you of your grandad, he speaks English very well and knows the history of the town extensively, including the tales of the uprising and subsequent massacre. He knows all the good places to eat and is more than happy to appear at random times in the morning should you need him. If you phone him up in advance before you arrive in Sopot, he will be there to pick you up from wherever you are, on time - guaranteed, my old company used to use this guy for when we travelled here and he never let us down once, if you want transport and knowledge on the places to visit, call this man.

Getting to Sopot from Gdansk is easy. Just go to the main train station in Gdansk and buy a ticket for the SKM commuter train, which as of October 2005 was 2.80 zl (less than 1 USD), in the direction of Gdynia. Sopot is the 9th stop on the way up the coast and it will only take about 20 minutes to get there.
** Be sure to punch your ticket in the machines that are in the station just before you go to the platform (NOT in the train)

All trains heading to Gdynia (most northern within the Tricity) stop in Sopot so you can get there direct from any place in Poland.
But you're more likely to visit Sopot on a pop-out trip from Gdansk: take the SKM commuters train. It's cheap, reliable and goes every several minutes in peak time of the day. The terminal (SKM-only platforms) is to the right of Gdansk's Main Train station as you're facing it. You can buy your ticket in a smal kiosk just before you reach the platform. The same in Sopot: you can but your return ticket just before you reach the platform. Don't forget to validate your ticket before you get on the train! Check the other photo here: you just slide your ticket into the machine.
You better do that as the SKM train staff check tickets on each ride!
Sopot train station is located within 5-7 minutes' walk from the main tourist area, no need to take taxis :-)

You can get to Sopot by boat from Gdansk, but the cruise will take longer than the train ride. The boat harbour in Gdansk is on the Motlawa river in Dlugie Pobrzeze (Long Wharf). You may check the details on the website but allow for the fact that the schedule may change between one season and another, so it's always best to check it when you're already in Gdansk. You can even travel on an old tall ship replica! All boats arrive at the end of the Sopot pier.
If you spend more time in Sopot, you could go on a boat trip to the Hel peninsula to see another seaside resort which used to be just a fishing village.

At Gdansk Glowny go to the right of the main station building to a wooden hut, this is where you buy tickets yo sopot and gdynia. The trains are behind the huts and are extremely frequent.
Well worth a day trip to sopot

It is easy to get to Sopot by train from most cities in Poland. All trains going to Gdynia stops in Sopot. The best is to take InterCity train or Express train (a few of them going from Warsaw for example).
