The Forest Opera was officially opened on the 11 August 1909. This unique forest location close to Nowowiejskie Lake is considered to be the most beautiful musical stage in Europe and to have one of the best acoustics.. An audience of 5 thousand can watch the performance. The annual Sopot Festival takes place here as well as concerts with Polish and foreign stars.
It?s worth taking a walk around the park ?very pleasant place for a stroll .. or more.

When you're walking on Monte Cassino heading east toward the water, you'll pass through this pleasant square filled with outdoor cafes, flowers, fountains and plenty of places to grab a "lody" (ice cream). There is a sculpture of a fisherman here that is a reminder of Sopot's past as a small fishing village. Take a few minutes to enjoy the atmosphere before heading down to the waterfront.

Just past this on your right hand side you'll see the building seen in my second picture. The tall tower is a lighthouse, but I don't know much else about it. The cross-street here is Grunwaldzka, which runs parallel to the beach. There's a smaller path even closer to the water that's a popular place for a stroll along the waterfront.

Europe's largest wooden pier, the Molo stretches over 500 meters into the Gulf of Gdansk. This is a great place for views of the beach and on a clear day, you can see the Westerplatte region of Gdansk. There were a lot of people basking in the sun the day I was there and in the summertime, it gets even busier with events and exhibitions taking place here all the time.

The main street in Sopot is ul Bohaterow Monte Cassino (or Heroes of the Monte Cassino) and this is where most people will spend their time when visiting Sopot. Along this completely pedestrianized thoroughfare, you'll find shops, cafes, restaurants and abundant opportunities for people watching. It leads to Plac Zdrojowy near the end and ultimately to the Molo, the long wooden pier leading into the Gulf of Gdansk in the Baltic Sea.

Near the upper end (I'm calling the end away from the water "upper"), you'll see this church that was built between 1899 and 1901. I went inside and was impressed with the architecture. There is a small square in front of the church (and in front of the Hotel Rezydent) with some benches that makes a nice spot to relax and do some people watching.

Funky place

The Centrum Rezydent shopping center about halfway down Monte Cassino is a pretty funky building from the outside. The building's skin looked warped and funky, but inside you'll find a normal little shopping mall with some shops and restaurants. The weather was too nice outside for me to spend much time indoors, but on a bad weather day, this would be an ideal escape.

Walking along the pier.

This is a must when you are in Sopot. The pier is considered to be the longest wooden pier in Europe, but because it's wooden it gets damaged very often as autumn and winter gales can be violent.
the pier was finally built in the twenties of the 20th century and immediately gained popularity as a place for strolls and meetings.
In summer you can start from here your trip to Gdansk, Gdynia or Hel. By ship of course!

Sopot's pier (the "Molo") is Europe's longest wooden pier, at a length of 645m.

Throughout the day it is thronged with tourists enjoying a stroll and some sea air.

Entrance to the pier costs 2.50 Zloty during the day (and 3.30 Zloty at weekends, I think) and is free at night.

Upon entering the pier, you will first encounter a large open area with fountains, gardens, cafes and souvenir stalls.

Tickets for boat trips to Gdansk, Gdynia and Hel can be bought at the entrance to the pier or at a kiosk on the pier itself and depart from the end of the pier.

Monte Cassino, Sopot

This is an area of Sopot between the beach and the centre of the town. It is named after the battle of Monte Cassino in Italy, 1944 when Polish soldiers stormed and occupied a German occupied fortress.

During the summer it is a hive of activity with bars and cafes packed with people enjoying the weather.

Walking out from Sopot to Gdynia

Okay, at the Tourist Office, enquired if it was possible to walk along the sea to reach Gdynia. I was told it's possible but it would be a long walk.

I decided to do just that. Beside, it's a long way to walk back to the train station & took the regional train to Gdynia anyway.
