    Madonna of Gdansk
    by 807Wheaton, 4 more photos
There is yet another legend about the sculpture of the Madonna. A young man accused of murder carved it in a single night. The magistrates were so impressed by its beauty that they pardoned him on what would have been his execution day.
There was a lot to see in St. Mary's Church. When we were finished we then went down St. Mary's Street. The street goes from the church to St. Mary's Gate.
Next to this huge church is the spired Royal Chapel. It is the only Baroque church in Gdansk/

  • St. Mary's Church with the huge clock - Poland
    St. Mary's Church with the
    huge clock
    by 807Wheaton, 4 more photos
We caught up with Lucus, our tour guide after an hour. He took us to St. Mary's church. St. Mary's Gate opens onto a narrow street of the same name which leads to the Church of our Lady. This church is the largest church in Poland and the largest brick church in the world.
It was built from 1343-1502 and took 159 years to build. It started as a Catholic Church and became a Lutheran Church during the Reformation and in 1945 it became Catholic again. The floor has 500 + tombstones so there is a huge graveyard under the church. Maybe 5000 to 10,000 people are buried here. It's painted white inside but now they are finding some pictures under the white paint. Lucus explained many of the chapels. One had a nice display of angels. There was an organ in the church that was destroyed duruing the war and the angels were the only things left. We saw the huge 4 meter sculpture of Jesus on the cross and there was yet another sculpture of Jesus on the cross. There is a legend that the sculptor actually crucified his son-in-law to do these sculptures, but Lucus said this is only a legend. The organ they now have has 25,000 pipes. We also saw a 16th Century Board of the 10 commandments. The main altar shows Mary receiving a crown from an angel. Above this gold sculpture is a stained glass window of Mary, clothed in blue robes and Jesus is behind her. There is a huge clock in here built by Hans Dieriager. It has strological parts. All 12 numbers have figures and Adam & Eve is on the top. Legend is that they blinded Han Dieriager so he couldn't build another clock, but there is the same clock in another town and the same legend. We also saw a beautiful painting of Jesus & Michael sorting out souls going to heaven or hell for their punishment. Going into heaventhey got their clothes. We also saw the touching Madonna of Gdansk from the 15th Century - a Pieta if you will.

When we finished the Amber Tour the bus brought us to the city. We had about an hour to walk around by ourselves. All the buildings have been restored from the Soviet and German bombings in WWII. Most of the houses in town have a Flemish style facade There is a pretty white house with gold trim that is called the Golden House. Four statues were on top and it is owned by Speiman family. In front of the town hall we saw the Neptune Fountain in front of the townhall. The town hall tower is the tallest tower. This is all on "The Long Street" . The bells chimed at 10AM. We enjoyed seeing some mimes. They are common in Europe.
There were lots of people in town when we were there.

The company that put on this exhibit is Styl Gallery. They are a maker and exporter of amber and silver jewelry. It's always interesting to look at amber; some of the pieces have pieces of petrified bugs in them. Some of the bugs can be quite large and dramatic. Amber can be found in many of the Baltic Countries.

The Tower of Wisloujscie for an Amber Exhibit

    Tower of Wisloujscie
    by 807Wheaton, 4 more photos
We were driven out in the countryside to a fortress and monument almost 500 years old from the 16th Century - The Tower of Wisloujscie. When it was constructed it was close enough to the sea that waves slapped up on it and a fire burned inside to provide a light to ships, so it was a lighthouse. On the drive, we saw lots of white birch trees. There are 250 different colors of amber but that does not affect its quality. Amber jewelry has been made here for 6000 years. There was a very good display of amber jewelry and a display of the history of amber in this area. It was a temporary exhibit. It was nice to drive outside a city and see the white birch trees and the farmland around the fortress.
This place is now being restored and is not open to the public at this time.

    Some clasical music festivals

  • Hej,

As I was reading your post few music festivals in Poland came to my mind.I have also found also some others on the internet

The most relevant- meets all or most of your conditions (choral, sacred, in churches) are:

Misteria Paschalia in Krakow (Holly Week) Mainly baroque music. Most of the concerts are in churches.
    http://www.misteriapaschalia.pl/en
It has always really good reviews.

Orthodox Church Music Days in Hajnowka in May (but some concerts also in Krakow)
    http://www.festiwal.cerkiew.pl/home.php?id=144
It's a bit in the midlle of nowhere place (from an ordinary tourist point of view, but still close to some unique places)That is really something extraordinary on our continetal penisula but not only European music (Koptian or Syrian etc. can happen as well).

Song of our roots festival in Jaroslaw (August)
    http://www.festiwal.jaroslaw.pl/eng/index.html
This festival has a bit more relaxing atmospere in my opinion (no tuxedos- hahaha). It attracts many young people.

    Wratislavia Cantans in Wroclaw (September)http://www.wratislaviacantans.pl/o_festiwalu.html
I've heard that also many young people attend it.

Most of your conditions will be fulfilled:

    Gaude Mater in Czestochowa (May)
    http://www.gaudemater.pl/gaudemater/strona,118.html
But not only European music- I listened classical Persian music this May by chance.

Early Music Fesitval in Stary Sacz (in July) in two churches :
    http://www.festiwal.stary.sacz.pl/

    Music in old Krakow(August)
    http://muzykawstarymkrakowie.pl/
Most of concerts are held in 'old buildings' but not always churches and these can be instrumental or secular pieces as well.
It has a very good reputation.

    Bach's music in Swidnica July/August

  • Don't miss a concert featuring Chopin's beautiful music. There are young people going around with flyers about how to get to one. Tickets can be purchased at the door. I thoroughly enjoyed the entrancing performance.
