An evening of Chopin Music
Don't miss a concert featuring Chopin's beautiful music. There are young people going around with flyers about how to get to one. Tickets can be purchased at the door. I thoroughly enjoyed the entrancing performance.

The Salt Mines
Very interesting and insightful tour. It shows how important salt was during the early times. People got paid with salt. It is outside the city but the tourist info center booked us a tour with one of the several operators. It requires walking deep down underground so wear comfortable shoes.

If there is one place on earth that stands as an enduring symbol of evil, then this is it. The horrors of this place are well-documented, and known to everyone.

The camp is well-preserved, and guided tours remind visitors of what happened here. Please be mindful that this was a place of great suffering and tragedy, and act accordingly.

For more on Holocaust sites, see my tip on the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC.

    Auschwitz/Salt Mines
Auschwitz and the salt mines are two different animals but both worth visiting. One can make your day somber and sober while the other is cool and amazing. Both options are avail by van or train. We found to figure out the train or bus/van by yourself is a lot cheaper than other offers. You can get most info from tourist handouts or in the apt. of train schedules ect.. Zakopane is a great town also if you have the time.

A walking tour of the absolutely wrecked remains of "The Wolf's Lair" is available to all interested people. Not wrecked by the attempt but by the advancing Russian troops, in Jan/Feb '45. Hitler had gone back to Berlin well beforehand. The attempt took place on July 20th 1944 and the locality then was the German name Rastenberg.Goto next page

Visit Krakow - a no brainer
This really is a no brainer, I'm sure the majority of people visiting Poland in fact make Krakow their number one destination.

There are not enough superlatives for Krakow - its just stunning. Come and see for yourself.

    Highlights for me included:

    - The Royal Castle on Wawel Hill
    - St Mary's Church in the square
    - The barbican
    - The city walls
    - Soaking up the atmosphere in the Grand or Main Square (Rynek Glowny)
    - The historic Kazimierz District

In fact there is so much, I'll give up at this point, come and explore for yourself - you won't be dissapointed.

    Auschwitz & Birkenau Concentration Camps
Auschwitz and Birkenau are two former Nazi concentration camps that were liberated in January 1945. The remains of the camps, the survivors' and liberators' testimonies, and the documentary evidence leave no doubt as to the shocking and huge crime against humanity that were committed there. Much of this is on display throughout both camps.

For me Birkenau (known as Auschwitz II) was the most daunting of the camps, its huge, desolate and harrowing, no doubt because the majority of the 1.5 million people murdered at these camps met their end in the gas chambers of Birkenau. When you stand there looking at the railway tracks leading upto the destroyed remains of the chambers, you can't help but feel sick.

One can only hope that civilisation learns from its past.

    Wieliczka Salt Mine
This is within a short bus trip of downtown Krakow and is an amazing salt mine that is now a major tourist attraction.

UNESCO have recognised this as a world heritage site and no wonder, they have been mining salt since the 13th century until it stopped in 1996. At a depth of 320 metres (tours only to 135m), 2000 caverns and 300kms of mine shafts - its impressive.

Miners over the years have created many carvings and sculptures, the cathedral room has to be seen to be believed.

    War machines at Katyn Museum
Just outside of Warsaw we took the bus to this former bunker. They still have all the war machines you could possibly ever want to see. Jim loved this place because not only did he get a personal tour, but they let him actually sit in one of the helicopters. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. He spoke pretty good english, which was important as all the information and descriptions are in Polish.
    Katyn Museum
    ul. Powsinska 13
The word Katyn was out of bounds in Poland's post-war press. Hundreds of thousands of Poland's officer class perished during the war at the hands of the Soviets, some were shot, others died during the trials of deportation. Katyn has come to symbolize all these crimes. In March 1940 Stalin gave the order for the execution of 25,700 Polish reserve officers. The first victims were discovered by the Germans in 1943, buried in the Russian forest of Katyn. This museum preserves the memory of the crime, and a host of personal effects that were discovered in the graves lend an intimate dimension to the fate of thousands.
