OSWIECIM : AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU

by swesn

After the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939, concentration camps were set up in Oswiecim and the area around it. The name was changed to Auschwitz. An abandoned Polish army barracks was chosen as it was relatively in a remote location and yet, it was convenient due to availability of communication links such as rail-ways.Auschwitz was transformed from a detention camp to a death camp as the gassing of millions of European Jews were carried out. A second camp, Birkenau, had to be set up nearby to cope more ‘efficiently’ with the elimination of Jews.Jews were transported here, thinking they were going to work in factories or farms and hence, brought along their personal belongings. Those categorised as ‘unfit’ for work were stripped of their clothes and advised to enter a ‘shower room’ for a cleansing. Instead, they were all gassed with Zyklon B cyanide gas. The others had to endure...

Collegium Maius in Krakow

by Paul2001

I think the Collegium Maius is one of the more interesting sights that I visited in all of Krakow. This Gothic structure is in essence the soul of the University District in Krakow. The building itself was begun in 1364. The pride and joy of the Collegium Maius is the wonderful University Museum. You can only visit via guided tour which are offered in English and French. My guide was very good, speaking excellent English and was in fact a student at the University. The tour takes you through the various common rooms and assembly halls that where used by professors in times past including Copernicus. The treasury is especially important with an amazing collection of clocks, astronomical pieces, laboratory equipment and globes. There is also the odd painting of note by such artist as Rubens. The museum tour takes about ninety minutes and goes around the complete circumference of the...

Cracow

by ania70pl

Cracow (Krakow) for many centuries was the seat of Polish Kings and it's still considered Poland's cultural and artistic capital. Built by many generations of artists living in the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Art Nouveau times survived the ravages of II World War. In the Old Town area there are over 300 historic buildings, churches and palaces which form uniquely architectural complex. The Main Market Square is in the main place of the Old Town. There every hour you can listen to bugle call (hejnal in Polish) which is played from the tower of St.Mary's Church (Kosciol Mariacki). On the Wawel Hill there is reinassance Royal Castle which houses a collection of countless objects of art and the famous tapestries. The Wawel Cathedral where Polish Kings were crowned and burried is also the burial place for many eminent artists and national leaders.Kazimierz was the area inhabited by the...

Warsaw

by cheekymarieh

On first sight, the city strikes you as a city devoid of character and just like a huge concrete jungle. However, when you venture nearer to the city centre you come across its true splendour. As well as the concrete monstrosity, parts of the city have been reconstructed to its original form with great attention for detail. The main reason for Warsaw's appearance is due to the fact that approximately 85% of the city was destroyed during World War II. However, you can now see a city that has risen like a phoenix from the ashes. Even today the reconstruction of the city is still taking place with shopping arcades and cinema complexes being built. During my last two trips to the city I couldn't help but be amazed at how much things have changed.Prior to the war there was a strong Jewish influence in the city, but today there is very little evidence of this as most Jews were either deported...

Krakow

by cheekymarieh

Krakow was the royal capital for 500 years. It came through the wars undamaged unlike many other Polish cities and so has retained its architecture from many different periods. The main square has some fine architectural examples - including the Indoor Market and St Mary's Cathedral. No other city in Poland has so many historical buildings and monuments. It is a listed UNESCO World Heritage site. It is also where the current Pope spent time at Wawel with its cathedral and castle. No trip to Krakow is complete without a trip here.By the outbreak of World War II the city had 70,000 Jews living in it. During the war, Krakow, like all other Polish cities, witnessed the silent departure of Jews who were never to be seen again. There is a Jewish quarter remaining in the city. Here you will find synagogues and Jewish restaurants. After the war a huge steelworks was built in Nowa Huta. This...

from Romania to Poland

by 68maciek

Buna Ziua,I don’t know what is your interest in travel to Poland.I usually go the other way round- to or through Romania. Romanian mountains, wooden art (including architecture) and Saxon villages and towns are really unique in Europe. As a Romanian I wouldn’t go to Poland for overcrowded (especially on weekends and high season –starts from 23.06 this year) mountains. If I were you I would easy skip Zakopane (even no Peles castle there) and Tatry (even more crowded than Bucegi).I would advise to visit some wooden churches for any other foreigners but not to a Romanian- you have far more interesting wood style than we (but if you want to compare- there are some located en route. Some Polish guidebooks compare Brasov to Krakow - you can easily judge it yourself on your way.Coming back to mountains. I can only think about one, which are completely different (but still too crowded)- from...

Roaming the Old town

by mallyak

It’sworth to simply wander around, through the small streets surrounding the Main Market Square, there is also beautiful view on the river (as the Old Town is on the high river bank). If you go towards the Barbakan on the left side you can eat the most delicious ice cream in the old town! For long years Warsaw Old Town remained only a residential area, but since the beginning of the 90’s much was done to enliven it. After the renovation of Krakowskie Przedmieœcie Street (and making it a pederstrian zone for weekends) the Old Town has become a favourite destination for everyone to have a walk (an ice cream is a must). Although it is calm at night, you can enjoy it also in the evening

Remains of warsaw Ghetto Wall

by mallyak

To create the Warsaw Ghetto, the Germans built 11 miles of brick walls around the Jewish quarter; this area was then closed to outsiders on November 15, 1940. The wall was torn down in 1943 when the Ghetto was liquidated. Today there is only one short section of the original wall remaining; this section was outside the Ghetto when the original Ghetto became a smaller area after most of the Jews had been deported.
