The Zamek Krolewski (Royal Castle) of Warsaw

by Paul2001

The Royal Castle of Warsaw is the most important building in the Stare Miastro of Poland's capital city. The castle dates from the Middle Ages. It was used as the Royal residence from the 16th century until the late 18th century when Poland ceased to be a independent nation. Like all of the Stare Miastro, the castle was destroyed by the Nazis during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. Reconstruction was completed in 1971. Much this reconstruction was done in recovered Baroque decorative artworks. There are two tours of the castle complex that you can take. Firstly there is the blue route which takes you through the Jagiellonian Rooms which I did not see. Secondly there is the yellow route which I took. This route is escorted by manditory guide and takes you through the various Royal Apartments and ballrooms. As in many Baroque styled buildings the artwork can be lavish to a fault.Today the...

St. Mary's Church in Gdansk

by Paul2001

St. Mary's Church is one of the great religious buildings in Poland. Originally built in the 15th century it was completely destroyed during World War II and subsequently rebuilt. The interior of the church is whitewash and therefore has a very austere feel to it.The sad thing about this church for me was photographic it. From afar the church dominates the skyline of the Glowne Miasto (old town of Gdansk) but it is hard to capture a good shot of the place close up. The rain I was experiencing made the lighting difficult too.
