Here we are - on the top of Mt Rysy

by KiNyA

Yes, that's us. Seven of us started but two unfortunately didn't manage to reach the top. With 2499,6 meters, Mt Rysy is the highest peak of Poland. It borders to Slovakia (on the other side there's Tatransky Narodny Park)

I've been to Poland!

by KiNyA

Well not much to say - I've been to Poland. I haven't seen much, but what I've seen was FANTASTIC! I'd like to go back to the Tatras, maybe to hike down to Zakopane, Morskie Oko lakes... Don't know. I've also thought of going to Poland via Inter Rail but my sister didn't want to.

Wroclaw

by call_me_rhia

Wrocklaw is possibly's Poland's best kept secret: the architecture is stunning, and all the buildings of the centre have recently been revamped and are very bright and colourful. It's a delight to the eye to be there. It's also Poland's 4th largest city. The main square (Rynek) is really the most gracious square I have ever seen: basically a concentration of geogeous buildings. There's also a wonderful area called Ostrow Tumski, where the cathedral lies, and where the streets at night are lit by gas lamps: romantic and suggestive. In other words: Wroclaw is a real gem!

Jelena Gora

by call_me_rhia

Jelena Gora - is a little nice market town about 2 hours away from Wroclaw, in the heart of the Sudeten Mountains which, although beautiful, are more like big hills. As soon as you arrive you notice the contrast between the cities and here; everything's less opulent and even people look different: less sophisticated, a little less happy, and a bit more dirty, too. The Rynek, even if small, is very beautiful and all surrounded by picturesque arcades

Zakopane

by call_me_rhia

Zakopane is a well-known tourist resort in Poland, in the Tatras mountains. There are many attractions there: first of all, right all over town, are the distincitve wooden houses: their style is unique to the area and it's called Zakopane style. There's also an interesting museum to visit, and a suggestive old cemetery. At the end of the village there's a funicular that takes you to the top of a hill where you can go for quiet walks and enjoy the majestic tatras mountains, which is a good alternative to hiking/skiing them, if like me you're short on time or you're in the winter season. Back in town, the tacky-ish main street is lined with restaurants - most of them serving traditional Polish meals. the side-trip is definitely worth it, especially if you're longing to be in the country for a while

Birkenau

by call_me_rhia

Birkenau is the sister concentration camp of Auschwitz - it's only a few kilometres apart, and the two camps are linked by a bus service run by the camp. It's only a few kilometres apart, but it looks like a world apart. Birkenau really touched me - in its simplicity. There's nothing on display to remind you of the holocaust - but what your eyes can see is better than any reminder or explanation. The shock starts with the entrance gate, under which the train passed and brought prisoners directly to the gas chambers. And then there's the desolation of the capp... barbed-wire everywhere, a huge field dotted with large cabins that look a lot more like stables - and yet, when you look at the "beds", you realize that animals in stables live much more comfortably. Then there are the chimneys of the gas chambers... countless of them... and an eerie silence.

Auschwitz-Ozwiecim

by call_me_rhia

There you are... when you reach the gate you see a familiar sign: arbeit macht frei. We've all seen it either on television or on books - now it is for real. The rest of my visit to Auschwitz was something I had already seen in the media - except from the words that someone spoke there. This person was on my tour-bus and he had been imprisoned in a concentration camp. He explained that only in the camp had he learned what hunger was. He said that both he and his father had been in the same camp, and one night, while all the prisoners were in their barrack eating their scraps of evening meals, his father died. And he said that he started to cry: not because his father had died - but because someone had taken the bread from his dead father's hand before he could take it himself and eat it.

Krakow

by call_me_rhia

Krakow is the old capital of Poland and it's a city full of charm. The historical centre is compact but there's so much to see that one should really spend a few days here. Right in the middle of the main square there's a delighful town hall and a covered-market selling in particular amber jewellery. There's countless interesting churches and museums - as well as old beautiful (if somewhat grey-ish) buildings. The real jewel, however, is the Wawel: an imposing castle cum cathedral set scenically on top of a hill overlooking the river: this is where the Polish kings used to reside

Wroclaw

by ania70pl

Wroclaw is one of the oldest cities in Poland, it's at least 1000 years old. The oldest part of the city is situated on a river island called Ostrow Tumski. The Old Town Market Square was at the junction of old European trading routes. The monumental Gothic Town Hall is now a cultural centre.Wroclaw's most often visited attraction is Panorama Raclawicka (Raclawice Panorama), a monumental canvas which is 15 m high, 114 m long and covers area of 1710 sq m. The painting shows a battle scene from the time of the 18th century Polish-Russian wars.
