Gdansk

by ania70pl

Gdansk is as old as Poland itself. Located on the coast of the Baltic and at the mouth of the Wisla river was the Polish gateway to the sea, a thriving, wealthy city, an important Hanseatic port and a Free City. Gdansk was the scene of the first battle of the II World War.The Old Town also known as the Main Town developed along ulica Dluga (Long Street) and Dlugi Targ (Long Market). Ending at the Golden and Green Gates these streets are lined with many historical monuments, art galleries and jeweller's workshops. You can find there Gothic Town Hall and the Artus Court where the town's patricians played host to royals.Built in the Gothic style St.Mary's Church is believed to be the largest ancient brick church in the world. it can accomodate 25000 people. You can't miss the Oliwa Cathedral with its magnificent organ noted for its fine tone and baroque ornamentation using mechanised...

Poznan

by ania70pl

Poznan is another major city in Poland whose history spans a millennium. On the island of Ostrow Tumski, washed by the Warta river waters stands a 10th century cathedral containing the tombstones of ancient Renaissance building. Not far from the Market Square stands the former Jesuit church considered to be the most beautiful Baroque building in Poland. Many famous people were hosted by the nearby Jesuit College, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Frederick Chopin. The Raczynski Palace houses the oldest public library in Poland.Every day at noon the little doors on the Town Hall open and two goats appear, butting horns 12 times. According to the legend they once saved the town hall from fire. With time they became the symbol of the city and of its witty, stubborn and hard-working citizens.

Warsaw

by ania70pl

Warsaw (Warszawa) - the capital city of Poland. 84% of the city was razed to the ground during the II World War so even the Old City isn't so old... The rebuilding of Warsaw's Old City after the war was one of the biggest reconstruction projects in Europe. If you are in Warsaw for only one day the most important things which you have to see are Old City with St.John's Cathedral and The Royal Way - from Old City and Royal Castle - the residence of the last Polish King, through Lazienki Park with Palace on the Water (from all sidies surrounded by the water) and Chopin's monument to Wilanow with baroque palace complex made famous by King Jan III Sobieski.

Wieliczka

by ania70pl

The royal salt mine in Wieliczka is listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site. it has nine levels at the depth ranging from 64 tom 327 meters and accomodate about 3000 chambers. The chambers are linked by shafts and corridors with total length of nearly 350 km. The most impressive salt chamber is called St.Kinga's Chapel and features chandeliers of salt crystal and masterpieces carved in salt rock. There are also underground lakes filled with saltry water. And if you want to do something for your health you can stay at sanatoriums which operate at the 135 and 211 metre levels. The tour of the mine takes about 2 hours.

Great Masurian Lakes

by ania70pl

Great Masurian Lakes (Wielkie Jeziora Mazurskie). Great place for sailing and kayaking, in some place it's almost untouched by civilization. Most lakes are small and medium size, hidden deep in the forest, with high banks or waterfronts overgrown with rushes and full of various aquatic birds species. Some of the lakes, like Sniardwy Lake and Mamry Lake are very large. Others, like Wigry Lake, have fantastic shapes or, like Jaczno Lake, have unique colour of water - malachite green.

Walk aimlessly in Warsaw Stare Miasta

by Paul2001

The Stare Miasta of Warsaw is the best place to start a tour of Polands capital. This old town section of the city was completely destroyed during the Second World War during and after the fighting between the Poles and the Nazis. Over the years after the war the old town was subsequently rebuilt and has apparently been successfully recontructed to look like it did before the war. The Rynek in particular is especially pretty and has a host of fine restaurants and bars to waste away the hours. Unfortunately while I was there much of the Rynek accept for the one side pictured here was covered by scaffolding in an effort to clean up the buildings.

Lakeland scenery in Poland

by viktorpl

The other scenery/landscape of Poland is lakeland scenery. This scenery covers much of Poland that consists of picturesque moraine woodland and thousands of lakes. Largest and most scenic are the mazurian lakes. Abounding the forests, marshes, and peat bogs, they are a haven for many birds species and many other animals. Also many floras, including the bog arum and the great sundew. This place is the top destination for all of you fishers, people who love lakes, and anyone who wants to see unspoiled nature. This is the perfect spot for any water sport including yachting, sailing, etc.

The Landscape of Poland

by viktorpl

In Poland, landscape greatly varies, with many sight-seeings, when I mean many, I MEAN MANY. Poland contains many unspoiled lands, and much of Poland contains four major landscapes,1. Mountains2. Lakeland scenery3. The Lowlands4. The coast1. The tatra mountains are the highest in central europe. Although covering a small area, they provide breathtaking alpine scenery . The mountains contain one of the rarest animals in the world, like the brown bear, marmots, and chamois. Some of the most common flowers are the crocus and the silver thistle. Nutcracker and other mountain birds are very visible in the wild.( Look at my other Must see activity for more info. about the other landscape of Poland)

The Wieliczka Salt Mine near Krakow

by Paul2001

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the highlights to any visit to the Krakow region. The mine dates from Medieval times when salt was first discovered here in the 11th century. It was still active well into the 20th century. The mine is accessible by way of tour only. The tour guide, many of which are English or German speaking, guides takes you down to a level some 65m below the surface. Some the desent is made by stairways instead of elevators so I hope that you healthy if you visit. Along the way you provided with information by the tour guide on the history of the mine and various technics on how they removed the salt. There are many highlights along the way, mostly involving salt sculptured dioramas demonstrating mining methods. Probably the highlight for most people is the huge chapel that has been created 135 meters below the surface. The Blessed Kinga's Chapel is about fifty metre...
